town counqll on thursday evening april 10th officials of smith stone limit ed appeared before the counoll and made a written offer of 4000 00 cash accompanied by a deposit of 1000 00 for the foundry on king street of which property the town was the ownen having foreclosed under it s mortgage this meeting was specially called for the purpose amongst other things of giving the third and final reading to the bylaw authorizing the sale of this property to the george town porcelain company limited tor 2500 00 the latter company propose to convert this building into a pot tery the officials of smith 6c stone ltd pointed out that they were given to understand a rew months ago that the town was not in a position to sell the foundry property as it could not give- a good title until the mort gage foreclosure proceedings were completed the first intimation they had that durant now offers canadas greatest sixcyunder value the durant 611 six- cyunder a quality su at a new low price the property and was go ing to sell it was the report that at the previous council meeting they had given first and secohoi reading to a bylaw authorising the sale of the property to the georgetown por celain co ltd for 2600 00 the officials of smith stone ltd contended that fthe town council should have advertised the property for sale and called for renders so that ah interested could tender they fur ther staled that they were anxious to have a foundry located in george town as it wotrid be a great benefit to the town as well as to their com pany if their offer was accepted a foundry would be in operation in a few weeks time with twentyfive em ployees to start with they thought another pottery would not give further employment in the town as the municipal counoll antici pated in the first place their pottery which- manufactured porcelain was operating at less than half its capaci ty and the porspects were that ihelr output would be further reduced ff the existing business depression con tinued it was pointed jut- that they had branches from the atlantic to the pacific in order to obtain all available business and they were sat isfied they were getting it tliey also submitted that it a tile pottery was contemplated the experience of the yrontenac tue co of urujabon in operation for nearly twenty years with over 250000 00 in vested was sufficient evidence that anothertile pottery would be super fluous ttie kingston pottery had four kilns but were only running one kiln a week and employing about fifty hands when they could employ over one hundred and fifty- hands if they could get enough orders to oper ate at capacity jt was therefore urged upon the council that they should not proceed further with the sale to the george town porcelain co but that they should either accept smith stones offer or advertise for tenders so that the best price could be obtained for the property councillor cum firings moved that council do pot- proceed wttte oald sale but wa not supported by the other tneurbers rn response to the opinion of some members of the council that they were legally bound to complete the sale to the georgetown porcelain co it was argued by the smith stone officials that as the third reading had not been given bo the bylaw there was no legal obligation to com plete the sale mr rlgby and mr mtmrns repre sentatives of the georgetown porce lain company ltd were also present and stated mat the- council had set their own price of 420oo on the pro perty wtthout the machinery and that they had accepted same they were not worrying about a market for their product and were prepar ed to commence work on the new plant as soon as the property was legally transferred to them members of council stated that as smith sc stones offer had not been received before they had agreed to sell the property to the georgetown porcelain oo they felt it was now too late to consider it but smith fe stones officials still maintained it was not too late to put this property up for sale by tender smith a stone had made an offer of 3000 for the building and mac hinery a week previous but the council bad already given an option to mr mtmmw and associates the reason ttaey now offered 4000 was because they had made a further in spection of the property and be lieved it to be worth that sum the bylaw authorising the sale of the foundry property to the george town porcelain co for 2500 00 was then given its third reading with only councillor cummlngs opposing past masters night at lojl no ms there was a large attendance at loi no 246 last tuesday
