brief illness of florence agnes shepherd wife of francis l white editor of the mil ton champion mrs white who was in her slst year was wellknown and respected by all who knew her she was a lifelong member of st paujts united church and her death is deep ly regretted by a wide circle of friends surviving are her husband an only son frank rowell white and four daughters misses ethel lillian ruth and bdlth white ail at home the funeral which was held from her late residence on sunday after noon was largely attended the ser vice being conducted by rev j w alkins pastor of st pauls united church presented to georgetown lions cbabter night dinner and dance largely attended lions off to a good start miss annie shanks on monday april 6 there passed peacefully at her home miss annie shanks of pbttapiece manitoba miss shanks was born at limehouse on tario the eldest daughter of william and ellen shanks she was one of a family of ten rour of whom re main to mourn her decease mrs p kahler of mollne william of field ing sasfc john and thomas of pettplece she came to pettaplece in 1880 being one of the pioneers of the district she was a lifelong member of the presbyterian church and later of the dnlted church to know miss shanks was to know one who in early life had identified herself with the highest and the best the basis of her character was an undivided loyalty to christian righteousness but suffused with the glow of a loving heart the tone of the church and community is better for her presence and influence up to a few years ago she was ever active in the interests of the church and the welfare of others during the last few years she had de licate health but was lovingly cared for to the last the funeral took place from ths home on wednesday april 8th and was in charge of rev j e bell the pallbearers were j r w shanks o b kelley peter kahler albert westwood j j snowdon bo- ward spearln a large crowd of friends and neighbors paid their re spects interment took place in pet taplece cemetery rapid city report er man ttie arena was the scene of a large and happy gathering last friday night when bhe recently organized lions club of georgetown was presented with its charter trie function took he form of a dinner and dance and the large hall at the arena was suit ably decorated for the occasion af ter lion rev f wase had asked a blessing over two hundred sat down to the nicely arranged tables and the delicious menu provided and serv ed by caterer lion w h long was heartily partaken of and pronounced one f the best during tue dinner hour musio was supplied by george town citizens baa and their selec tions added much to the enjoyment of trie occasion president bill grant was the toast- master of the evening and when he thought all had partaken lib the limit he called the gathering to order and announced the following toast tp the king national an them- then followed an address of wel come by lion bui orant a response from uon stan moss president to ronto lions club lion herb sooer zone chairman then presented tne flags a union jack and stars and stripes to the club the toast master called on lion jack kelly who in a neat speech in troduced district governor lloncy thomas who following an interesting and appropriate address in which he outlined the principles- tf ttnwim and urged the georgetown members to live up to the high standard set by the o presented president bui grant with the ohartefol george town lions club lion bill on behalf of the club thardced the donor at this juncture mrs w v grant presented mrs cy thomas with a beautiful bouquet mrs thomas thanated the club for their beautiful present the toast to the ladies and ably upheld by rev dr of knox presbyterian church george town ate president of suncoe rotary club lion charles burnsides tall twister distributed the lucky number tickets and presented each lady with a car- nation the club also presented each lady with a box of delicious choco lates during the toast list choruses were sung by the gathering and instrumen tal numbers were given by stan ball company and sadie and ben silwtr thorn the singing of the maple leaf brought this part of the program to a close and the remainder of the even ing was spent in rfwwig to music supplied by the army service or chestra the lucky number prise a beautiful bridge lamp was won by mrs wal lace thompson the consolation prise going to mrs herb boper of hamil ton lions were present from hamilton burlington dundas guelph toronto and brampton sti georges church fbsttval of st george- observes a delightful banquet was held in st georges sunday school room on thursday april 23rd st georges day under the auspices of the wo mans auxiliary mrs s groat presi dent was in charge of the general arrangements whilst mrs l w dann took charge of the favours and special decorations being ably assisted by mrs kirk and other ladies of the auxiliary red rosea union jacks and a great banner of st george to gether with a beautiful picture of st george made the room look very pretty and fitting for the occasion tne rector rev f h wase pre sided and welcomed the many guests among whom were rev p a and mrs lawyer hamilton and dean of niagara the dean was in a happymood and spoke very elo quently on the ideals of st george patron saint of england the spirit that has guided england down thru the centuries has been the ideals of st george her patron saint said the dean he took three of these ideals viz chivalry freedom and religion as being the outstanding vir tues of kngianrt and appled them to the individual life to ormilatm a very hearty vote of thaihra was tendered to the dean by mr k roy edwards for big helpful and inter esting address which was carried with great enthusiasm mr w p bradley in his own inimitable way tendered a sincere vote of thanks to mrs groat and the officers and members of the w a for their work in preparing such a wonderful banquet and last but not least we had mr 8 kirk in his droll and humourous manner thanking the various artists for their splendid pro gramme the pronouncing of the blessmg by the dean brought a very happy gathering to a close b ispjmliffll 23rd mr a duncan chairman of the board welcomed the parents and friends of the children and later spoke op some mitten pertaining to the school the patriotic number a flag for the empire was followed by four selections from ths choir of thirty children who take part soon in the hahon music festival the singing of the children delighted the audience showing very careful training by thetr instructor miss harrison the shoe makers dance by eight little girls and boys was a pretty sight the chief feature of the evening was the presentation of the operetta the queens bouquet or grandmothers garden institute tor the blind and wm f dresden ontario supervisor of industrial em ployment for the same institution were the guest speakers of the oc casion after all had partaken of a most bountiful dinner and the business of the evening had been transacted president bill grant introduced the speakers mr oustar outlined the work of the institute and stressed the necessi ty of having a survey of children in the schools ucbrder that those with defective vision may receive the pro per attention and possibly be saved from besoming blind be sighted numerous instances in ontario towns and cities where much beneficial work had been done in this connec tion and urged the cooperation ol the lions olub with the public school board to have a survey made of the pupils of georgetown school the 50000
