sixhorse teams swung on to the show lot of a southern- town under the warm sun of a sunday afternoon in early octo ber crowds of sightseers watched elephants pulling bigtop and mena gerie centre poles upright while groups of racing youngsters followed cages of wild animals as they rolled smartly to resting places near their rapidly rising canvas destination teams of horses used for hauling were making for their long low tents jangling traces cro over their backs the cookhouse where sbrty cooks and waiters tolled busily at ranges and tables making ready the sunday dinner drew the attention of many of the visitors especially the women twenty elephants picketed in the open swayed to and fro in the midst of a curious throng a fourteenyearold boy freckled blueeyed wearing a cap a blue jer sey and newly washed overalls gaaed at the elephants eagerly steadily he had watched them step gingerly down the ramps leading rom their railway car and bad followed thern on the long hike to the lot nothing that the great creatures and their keepers had done bad escaped his eye nothing the keepers had said in the handling of their charges he had not beard a big man walking swiftly across the lot suddenly halted for a moment he inspected the largest of the ele phants jim i he called to the head bull man dont work trilby to day keep her out of the parade to morrow shes looking a ltle run dosm yes sir answered- jim h will do her good shes showing her aoe this fall the freckled boy was all attention as the big man turned to walk away the boy ran to bis side mister he said do you want to hire a boy to help with the elephants the man smiled well sonny are you the boy yes sir i want to learn how to train elephants i always have tm afraid youre too young tou see we dont take boys with the cir gaaed into the boys frank pleading blue eyes and checked an impluse to refuse gently perhaps he recalled the day when he as a boy of sixteen had dodged among guy ropes and wagons until he had reached buffalo blws private tent with a like request perhaps he remembered the words of the famous scout and xn dlan fighter spoken with the warm cody chuckle major burke kindly take this young man to the front door and tell sam to investigate if that part is all iteht tell saw i said to put the lad to vork anyway the ug man put his hand on the boys shoulder turning toward jim and the elephants again hundred feet on bis bind legs carrying his trainer on- his tusis yes that was the goal henry had in mind that first whiter and gradually he approached it- by the time the trick was perfected snyder was as large as any of the old ele phants with the circus and he was still growing henry kks become boss of the bigshow menagerie as well as of all the elephants and through those years the affec tion between snyder and henry had strengthened several times the frightened herd stampttnghadbeen halted dyhenrys calling to snyder steady snyder dome herel and where in a herd of twenty elephants there is one that will heed its trainers call no matter how terrified a cir cus is indeed fortunate for stampedes of frighterased elephants are terrible things which cause staggertogpro perty loss and henry gave orders to the bull men to take the elephants in to the shallows of the snake river for a bath take them in two at a tune and stay with em be ordered however it was but a short tune be fore that canaries have not been always a famllpfef beautiful birds but it is true thatftbelt beauty and todlviiluauv tyare manmade this bird was first found to the canary inlands from which it ac quired its name there was nothing any more attractive about ltfl ap pearance than bur common sparrow having a dullcolored feathering but its singing- voice was noticeable it was in the early part ofthe six teenth century that ft merchant from europe who was trading with gthe canary islands nofloed the remark able voice of the little birds of those- islands he captured an enormous number of them and set out for europe hoping to sell them as song mrde tfthe ship was wrecked but foruriate- ly a sailor thought to free the birds they took refuge on the nearest point of jand which happened to be the lale of elba here their number in creased rapidly very soon after the shipwreck they w transported to large numbers in to the countries of europe then be gan the breeding and domestication which brought about marked changes in their appearance in every european country they were bredv with various other- birds this has been continued until there s an unlimited variety of species throughout the world the german productions are the most famous one of the most fascinating things relating to canaries is the training of their singing voices in doing this a number of the birds are put u a room together with a canary organ which is placed to a comer at first the mphlnf is sounded so as to imitate the whistle of the ordinary untutored canary then by gradual steps the sound is improved until it has reached an hrritp of the highest standard of canary voice birds that reach the nn are easily sold at a handsome price others are priced in county co unc1l accordance to the heights they reach in some cases only the m birds are given the vocal training and this is done just before their brooding by this method the mother bird is able to translate the notes correctly to her little ones m most cases the brood of a good stoging mother bird becomes good singers merely through the guidance of their maternal teach ing canary breeding is a principal in dustry in many countries of the world and it is unfortunately for the birds a profitable one the county council mot in milton tuesday nov 17u when practically only routine business was transacted the whole session being taken up with committees reports the education committee report re commended agriculture grants of 500 each to burlington and oakvllle high schools c the annual report of the mothers allowance commission showed 40 bene highways re the building of the middle road and strongly protested against tfte county paying any share towards the cost- of the cosd while nothing definite was stated it was hinted that the oountjrs share might betsnry ten per cenu a clause in the report recommending the purchase cf snow plow equipment at a cost nt 13000 and a male of snow fence was adopted after some discussion the finance committees report dealt with the recent sale m county de bentures and the loss sustained there- by through the government submit ting to the county council an agree ment which did not prove valid th finance and good roads committee were delegated await on the mini ster of highways asking for compen- sajon towards the countys loss as the debentures now had to be placed hi the bank at 5 per cent interest in- stead of being som at a premium and an interest rate of 5 per cent the county clerk before the meet ing adjourned gave a brief resume as to how expenditures where comparing with the estimates and they proved to be working out most satisfactorily the warden also announced that the wardens dinner would be held at milton shortly after the middle of december cbamnloir the uttu bo y8 relaxed in the glow of a surging thankfulness then he had his arm about snyders trunk while oftethy one the rest of the herd following old mom nosed into a circle about him as though to offer an expresskov of their gratitude andl so it went onthrongb the years the comrades between snyder and henry trnoughoat the show- world men marveled at it snyder became known among animal men not only as the greatest at an per forming elephants but as the mighti est worker of all captive pswhyderms tales were told of us p at the hagenbeck zoo to oetintny at tbe elephant stockades in burma and ceylon andl- or course where yarns of order were told the name of henry wallaehistratnt came to tbe fore it was often related that the power ful young elephant hadjiushed heavy pole wagons off a muddy rot snyderl oorrrmanrted the trainer andt on came the- elephant the heavy wagon or- cage creaking before him snyder never failed whether aided by teams araming at he traces ahead orvaot thus it was on the known i once had friends living in phila delphia who bought a puppy of no particular breed fhey simply wish ed to own a dog and were not fussy about its having a proud pedigree in due season the- animal grew to ma ture dogbood but unfortunately it did not show signs of much intelli gence iii tact it was downright stupid to all its carryingson so stupid that the various nieinbers of the family finally decided that a bet ter and a brighter dog should be se cured to take its place all this occurred a good many years ago when the common mariner of npg of a dog or cat was to carry it away and drop it down to a section where it was to be hoped somebody would want- the discarded creature more keenly than did tbe ones who were disposing of it the society for the preventon of cruelty to animals and the animal rescue league were not then functioning to the splendid humane pianner which they are today so as one of uw inembers of the family was to make a trip by ran of a dozen miles over many bridges and king bund devious ways it was de cided to give the dog a ride and turn it loose in a strange section where someone might be yearning for just such an animal the journey was made and by night the dog was away to the darkness the poor homeless victim of its own- helpless stupidity all because it didnt have brains enough to endear itself to members cf its own family en justltw to his meuiiien of the fam- ly it should be said that then- con sciences pricked them not a little at the rather cruel manner in which they had disposed of the unwanted unfortunate member of their house hold they hoped he would find a home to which canine intelligence was not to such keen demand and so tbey slept and the next morning when they arose tbey found waiting at their door the dog they had- carried away because he lacked intelligence they greeted him with great surprse and with lcvlng kind ness the fact that he was able to make bis way home oyer so blind and dintcult a route convinced them that they possessed a dog that should ever after be given the friend liest of care for its high degree of intelligence if for nothing more and it was given just that a spinster of loan the offering of this considerable amount of bonds to investors is one of the most important financial unaer- tnhngb this country has ever wit nessed certainly since the war days when victory bonds were offered m large amounts and readily subscribed to save the country from foreign ag gression now the necessity has arisen of saving the country from economic conseauences of an extraordinary character and that the public will respond with the same promptness is as uncjuestloned as when canada stood on the verge of a cataclysm to the darkest days of the great war owing to worldwide c economic problems are confro canada which require tbe public to respond with the same promptness and in the same measure as when canada raced the darkest days of the oreat war that is why the present appeal for funds is being made one of the important features of this issue is that the public will re ceive a little more than 5 per cent on their investment the bonds are being issued to mature at the end of ave years according to the wishes of investors the ave year bonds are priced at 99u and the ten year ma turity at os both classes can be ob tained in denominations of 500 and tl000 but the ave year issue can also be obtained in 100 lots lfhlch will appeal to people of modest means the interest dates are may 15th and novensbef 15th the interest rate starting to accrue from nov 15th 1913 fully registered bonds of larger denonodtnaions running up to as high as 100000 are also obtainable with the interest payable on these direct to the holder by government cheque all the banks in canada and then- branch offices are authorised to accept subscriptions as well as all recognised bond dealers throughout the domin ion general feeling in wellinformed financial circles is that there win be adequate response on tne part of the investing public to make this issue a great success there is profound con fidence among bankers and other lead ers in the realm of finance that cana dians can be depended upon to back up their country with their money when call is made for their assistance that there is a large amount of money awaiting favourable opportuni ty for investment m some highclass security such as a government bond provides is unquestioned the public have sayings in the various banks ag gregating upwards of 1600000000 tins total approximates art increase of 48000000 over tbe figures of a year ago which goes to ahotw that the public atejtlsplaytog pronounced ha bits of thrift one of the heartiest signs possible for any country to ex hibit besides this source of purchasing power it is stated on good authority that trust companies hold a substan tial reservoir of funds which wujd come into service to connection with just such an offering as the lfntoon of canada is making through the de partment of finance at ottawa these are encouraging factors which ought to crown the offering with suc cess if the public at large second the efforts of financial organisations
