recelv ed another letter from dr mcallister who is holidaying in the west we arc- publishing same as we think it wulprove interesting to many of our readers stroma alberta aug 251832 editor the herald oeorgetown dear 8ir since my last letter to you we are visiting with my sister and other relatives here on cpr yesterday we motored out into the country about scrome which is about 100 miles southeast of edmonton we saw a great deal of wheat ripe a consider able part of which is cut yields here will vary from 15 to 35 bushels per acre the hot winds of past two weeks have hastened ripening and reduced the yield generally there are five elevators here and one flour mill at the alberta pool elevator we saw what is here termed a tank of wheat of 1931 crop being unloaded the wagon load with deep box was dumped after weighing into a grain pit under the scales this dumipng was done automatically by electricity the rear end of wagon was lowered and after the end board of the tank was oepned the wheat ran out the farmer got 36c per bushel tor bis grade no 4 northern yesterday our party saw a new method of harvesting wheat a push reaper with an elevator attached where the knotter ihnnh he put the wheat cut shortt inlio a large barge drawn by four stout horses when the barge was packed and tramped fun the reaper which cut a 13foot swath and was pushed by six strong horses stopped and the barge was opened by the attendant at rear and the load of cut wheat was dumped at a con venient place this made a somewhat square shaped heap about 7 feet wide 9 feet long and r feet high and when threshed would yield rrom 35 to 30 bushels of grain this miniature stock had then to be topped with toe looser ends of straw which clung to it we drove right out into field over stubble two to two and one half feet long by this method no twine was used and stocking was eliminated three men were needed to operate the combined reaper elevator barge outfit today we purpose going to a small lake near hardlsty east of strome where bathing can be enjoyed in spring water yours truly a mcallister v first last always quality because your health largely depends on foods our activities ate mm an
