liberal progressive candidate for hal ton in uw coming provincial election to rue tlxctthts of the couvty ojf maltom in thu letter i wll tc iiscus uw nnaticial situation of this province at uie time we were entrusted lo man age uie affairs of uw province and uw rtnanclal condition at uw present time but before oolng ro i would like to make a few comments on uw temperance question my npponent made a very serious charge with re ference to the issuance of beer lic enses in this county he said they had been issued to dives and uiat there was political influence in regard to uie issuance of licenses this l a very iseriow- charge for any public man w make the clurse is not true and i have publicly asked for nartl culars his omy answer u that iw is not going to be waaww ul a es- treversy as ta iba aaeriu af ay gjr- uealar beer arur i am not sug gesting a controversy nor did i bring uw matter up in uw flrst place mr dingle made an absolutely unfounded charge with uw hope of gaining a few temperance votes the people are enuued to know uw facta i am simply suggesting uiat he should elher withdraw the charge or make public uie information which he has if any to substantiate uw charge 1 am pleased to see uiat be freely ad mits lobbying for a beer license in burlington when uw town is already served by four licensed hotels tlds s is some guide to uie elec tors as to whether his letter on tem perance was for uw advancement of temperance or for uw purpose of at tracting votes as to his charge of political interference i challenge him to name one license in iluton coun ty which lias been issued on political grounds i have treated all applica tions on their merits and have not allowed politics to interfere quite as many licenses have been issued to conscrvauves as to liberals the act was not passed by the hepburn government but was left on our door step by uw henry government we have administered the act as fairly as it can be administered if we had changed it without giving it a fair trial we would have been criticis we are now suggesting changes by way of uw appointment of an inde pendent commission what does mr dingle suggest- does he want the act repealed or does he think it should not be managed by an independent com mission the rove advertitlnc com plains at uw profits which have been made out of uw liquor business i frankly admit uiat uw profits have been increased but this has been be cause uw government is getting all of uw profits during uw first year of the hepburn administration there was actually less liquor sold and th profits increased just over two mil lions of dollars these figures are on record and speak for themselves the people already know where uw pro- als were going before we took office that is one of the reasons we were elected to office much has been said as to the fin ancial condition of uw province which has been intentionally misleading we have balanced uw budget as we pro mised we would this is not disput ed we have adapted a policy of say as we go which also cannot be isputed mr rowe says we have in creased the public debt of taw province by 100 millions of dollars we say we have reduced it- i will explain where uw difference of opinion artfea and you can judge for yourselves as t who is correct mr rowes takes ids i figures from uw statement of the public debts months be tore uie nenry i government was thrown out of office mr hepburn takes his figures from the statement of the mblic debt at uw time of uie first hepburn buigtt in the spring following his election to office and this is of course after paying the debts incurred by uw henry government since uw first hepburn budget in uw spring of 1u35 not one dollar lias been added to the public debt this is not denied by mr itoar you can judffe for our- srlves as to which is uw fair and the honest waj of accounting there is one other cv convincing fact to asmt one in arriving at uie correct conclusion ontario s financial posi tion ts so strong today uiat uie in terest rate which we are paying to- da is llltle more uuui half of uw interest rale which investors demand ed from ontario four years ago in addition to balancing the budget r have reduced taxation we liave abolished the amusement tax we have assumed the 1 ull cost of pro vincial highway- relieving uw coun ties of 30 we have increased uw government grants lo county roads we have assumed uw full cost of old age pensions- we liavr assumed the full cost of mouiers allowances we have reduced motor car licenses in addition to all of uirse reductions we have made a grant of one mill to even local muntcliallt in uw pro vince ttie total mixing of taxation in halton count atone which have been guen to u b uw hepburn government since vr took office u vrr leoomooo and i challenge my opponent to rrrutr thee rurures thls result luy bren brought about through econonk and uirough an honest collect ion of ytxrv we have not increased jtaxfc but we liave col lected tlwm alul han played no fav ourites in doing this r have made mails enemies but wp have brought relief to uw electors of uils province inslead of a spirit of defeat and fail ure which existed three short yeas agotodav we have a sjiirtt of confi dence and opumlsm 1 predict uiat when uw cleetion is over mr uowe and lib supporters will not find that uw electors of this iirovlnce can ba fooled b false advertising mr howe says iw is lo he trusted i put ray trust in uw intelligence of ixw elec tors thomah a lujtkelook
