definitely un derstood that the corporation does not plan large commercial extension or its operations the plan merely provides lor acceptance of such eom- knercta programs as are helpful for financing of operations- it is believed a limit on commer cials has been provided for in the bud get but that this will be reduced as aoon as possible and whenever the flnshrlal situation permits jn other words the idea is to keep che pro grams v free as possible of the com- jaynlsl taint correstondfjice georgetown dec 7th 1937 to the editor georgetown herald tvi sir while the interest ih civic finances is still active we would present for the cxnlderatlon of our duzens wfl facts and figures of which not mil ap pear in the published reports of the towns finances these none the less are of vital interest to the wel fare financial and otherwise of the community during the past three years from nov 1st 1034 to march 3 1st 1937 our town has received from the liquet control board cheques to the value of 50541 this is of the pro vincial revenue from the sale of beer and wine in beverage rooms in the municipality the provincial tax is fie per ealllon on beer and 5c per gallon on wine sold which presum ably would be about the same in small communities little wine is re tailed so that in our calculation ue have ignored the probably small dif ference in selling price at an estimate or 16 glasses of beer to the gallon retailed at 10c the amount spent in georgetown during i the 29 months of which we hae re cord is 6738800 apart from the 505 41 above re ferred to what hae ne to show for this expenditure we are told we cannot afford to install a muchneeded sewerage as tern to safeguard the health or the community yet we have in less than two and one half years soent for beer more than enough to pro vide the full cost of the first in stalment of a sewerage system fas recommended in our medical health officers published statement in addition we might have had the needed chlorlnation plant for the pur ifying of our drinking water our beer bill for the last twelve month of the period referred to 7ould have more than paid tor the proposed addition to our high school which a majority of our ratepayers have decided we cannot afford surely no consideration of the sub ject of community welfare can over look this situation on behalf of the wxjtu mrs c b catherine dayfoot press
