worthy of emphasis and for that reason ve are having the same published in the herald georgetown wctu liquor did its job well it the prpvmoe of ontario is proud of its boose jlffcilness let it rejoice in its christmas achievement let it crown its bottles with mistle toe deck its emporiums with mlly make every day christmas and every evening a christmas eve orgy then indeed should its cup of happiness be overflowing consider the revenue no effort was omitted to make liqu or available store hours extended staffs enlarged a merry christmas for all i result in toomto and district three persons killed sixtyone in jured fifteen seriously twentyseven persons arrested one for manslaughter and another for criminal negligence 140 known accidents 300 arrests for drunkenness a merry christmas for ontarios liquor business probably not in history has there been such a sight in downtown toron to as on the night of dec 34th the streets were staggering with inebri ates men and women boys and girls departing throngs at the union sta tion were hilarious with liquor every street ear carried its quota of liquor- store and beverageroom products motor cars were driven by people without their senses s the poor blind newspaper venur and his wife were in the way of a merry christmas so their lives were snuffed out they will not inteifere any more any pedestrian took his life in his hands there is no way in which the seri ousness of the situation can be mini mized the streets were not favor- ttble for safe driving careful sober motorists took this into account the drunks did not the warnings pleas for safety fell on too many dear ears but who expected men and women disabled by liquor to drive carefullyr in the last analysis the blame for this condition is attributable to high- pressure liquor sales the province officially must accept a large share of responsibility as long as it preends to operate under a control policy the province eannot oontrol human frailties or appetites it can conduct its liquor huslnwis so that booae will not be so freely dispensed instead of extending hours and staffs it can restrict them on eetit of the kind and should do so it will have to make it more difficult for irresponsible men and women to run wild it was to be expected that the jes- sott of last year had been well learn ed we know now that lessons and experiences are soon forgotten oon trol must be exercised at the source of these sad chrutmases and unhappy new year fatally woutnded working in bush youth gets buckshot chattoe rn head and auu howard tfrlllpgton 31 of for all i while there is bound to be a natural regret that the passing of the old year finds most of us with a lot of uncompleted plans and unrealized ambitions there also comes a pleasant consolation that our labors and endeavors have not been entirely unrewarded we are richer by the experience perhaps a bit more broadminded perhaps a little wiser it seems such a short time since last new years day when we start ed out with high hopes and ambitions and now another new years day is almost upon us life is so full of pleasant tasks and friendly as sociations the duties of the day come so thick and fast the opportunities for service and helpfulness are so many that the days slip rapidly past and before we have reailzed it the relentless wheel of time has com pleted another revolution we are glad that another new year has arriv ed it gives us an opportunity to express our appre ciation for the kindness of our many friends we are also reminded that some obligation is laid upon us to carry on to greater achievements and more fully de serve your confidence and respect we are ambitious not for ourselves alone but for every one of the good friends to whose loyalty and cooperation we owe so much we believe that you are deserving of the best of our efforts and service and we enter the new year with a firm determination to do everything in our power to merit your confidence thats our resolution fojr nineteen thirtyeight you all ppiness and prosperity be with oming year editor por oodnciulors o w murray by w j mcdonald and david radcuffe edwin harrop by thomas bird and p h graham his recent severe illness on motion of reeve currie wm gowdy was ap pointed chairman of the after meet ing and called on the following can didates rece george currie said it was a pleasure for him to again explain to the ratepayers work of the council during the year and welcomed good honest criticism referring to trans portation mr currie suggested that it might just be possible in fifty years rorm now that the highways we are building today would be in the same position as our present day railways in tills clionitlng and advancing age more modem means of transportation may be available and the things we strive for today may not be needed in the future he explained the bnan cuil standing of the county and stat ed that in 8 or 10 years the debenture debt had been reduced from sot7000 to 1440000 and by 1040 a very targe proportion of the balance should bo paid off he referred to the new hlh school act whereby pupils rom the township were a direct charge oh the muhlciphlity he explained at considerable length the expenditures by council in conrectlon with the different departments during the vear and while their might be a deficit o n round 700 for 1937 the surplus of 11000 in 1930 would leave a balance of over 300 the township had no debentures and nothing had been bolstered up to deceive he ratepay ers if he decided to be a candidate for reelection to the reeveshlp he would endeavor to promote safe and sane municipal government deputyreeve n a robinson said mr currie had explained the finan cial statement of the township very thoroughly he was a junior mem ber or the county council during 1b37 but believed that body of men had done wonderful work in conduct ing the fin affairs of the coun ty and reducing the debenture debt by a large sum some money had been spent on county buildings but more would have to be apent in the near future the county roads were better than the avemge the mem bers or township council had their differences at limes but generally worked in harmony in the best in terests or the ratepayers and had done good work during the year some roads in the township were not as good as he would like but with the addition or new mjtchlnery purchased they would be repaired in the near future he gave hepburn credit for uie one mill grant and additional 10 per cent to the township which helped considerable outstanding taxes were hard to collect and the council had to be considerate he was honored to be nominated for reve and would be a candidate mr cur rie had had 9 years and he was a good reeve it was now his turn to move and he would appreciate the support of the ratepayers it elected he would endeavor to uphold the standard ot the township councillor w a wilson said there was not much to add regarding coun cil work to what had been explained by the reeve and deputyreeve they had all endeavored to do their best for the ratepayers as a whole as mr robinson was moving up he felt that he was entitled to the de- putyreeveshlp and would be a can didate for that office he aoliclted the support of the ratepayers in the coming election councillor harrop said with the old age pensions mothers allowance etc being taken over by the government it looked as if there wouldnt be a great deal tolowlth taxes in a few years very utile money had been spent on township roads in the past ave years but now that times were getting better more should be spent on the roads in order to save them it is money well spent to make oer- manent roads instead of patching them up he had been a n of council tor the past three years and would acaln taw a candidate h would appreciate the support of use electors councillor howard may said he had been a member of council for tba last three years and had tried to deal with all matters in a fair and im partial manner if mr wilson was st lor deputyreeve he woum hot oppose him but would be a candidate for th an if elect ed he would endeavor to serve in the best interests of the ratepayers of the township at this juncture considerable time was taken up diacuaslnc a couple of outstanding- cases of unpaid taxes tn the township thomas l leslie who had been nominated lor reeve said it was ilk old times t6 speak to the ratepayers again at a nomination meeting ha congratulated reeve currie and de putyreeve robinson on their expla nation or the councus work he re- rerred to the equipment of the public schools and criticised the lack or road work as large investments had been made and utile a given to keep the roads in cood condition it ils a poor policy to let them co down and then have to rebuild them he had been a m oy council and before the ratepayers nn previous oc casions if elected to the reeveshlp ha would endeavor as berore to work in the best interests or the ratepayers or-the-townshlp- l l mulltn said he had been four years in council and deputyreeve for two years and all knew his record he thought the penalty for not pay ing taxes at time stated too hlch and whoever is in council in uxm should endeavor to remedy this mat ter if there is an election i may be a candidate and ix elected will en deavor to serve the township faith fully as in the past g w murray said he was not a stranger to the ratepayers of tho township having served four years in councu berore he was defeated for deputyreeve he had been asked to be a candidate again the council had done weu during the year they had spent money but he thought a fair share was allotted to the corner in which he resided there was now no representative from his section and he would be a candidate for coun- cluor tor 1038 he solicited the sup port of the ratepayers and if elect ed would give his best services in re turn hume cunic said he would be m candidate for 1038 councu and if
