vzr the georgetown herald wednesday evening january 5th 1938 page 3 5f snapshot cuiu new years resolutions i resolve by the umjic ot lighting aelectloii and arrangement to find the picture hidden in common things long tradition demands that ete at the begin ning or a new year to tarn otera new leaf perhaps several new leaves it this isa good idea for ordi nary people it is a still better idea for as as photographers even the best of as make mistakes that we conld avoid if we would only take a qrm stand and nothing can help so much as to work ont a code and then stick to it- here then is a set of new tears resolutions for snapshot guild members check them over and seo which ones apply to yon add any others yon think of then paste the whole list in your photographic note book and abide by it in the twelve month ahead this year i resolve l to think always before i shoot 2 to remember that a camera has no brain of its own only an eye and will only take pictures of jhe scenes and subjects i pat in front of it 3 to bear in mind tnat my pic tures to be good must be in teresting to other people as well as myself and that to be 1 interesting a plctnra must have a central idea a pleasing arran and 14 gh tin g which is suited to the idea the picture is to express i farther resolve 4 to try to see the hidden pic tures in everything and to ask myself not is this a good pic ture subject but rather how can i by the magic of llghtingandarraneement bring out the picture or pictures this subject contains 5 to experiment with lighting and pictorial arrangement so that my eye will become trained to see the pictures in herent in common things 6 to study my mistakes and note down what i did that was wrong and remember not to make the same error twice and 1 resolve that whenever i make an error i will try to do the picture over the right way so that its lesson will be more pointed in other words i resolve to make more and better pictures in john van guilder household insects cavsb heavy losses in an address to the gntomologeal society of ontario on the importance of cleanliness andood housekeeping practices in household insect control o r twain of uie entomological branch dominion department of agriculture said that undoubtedly the most injurious of household insects are the two species of clothes moths of which the webbing clothes moti is the more important these ani versally common insects have prob ably been a source of loss and an noyance to man from the earliest times but the unproved standards of living of modem tunes involving wider use of manufactured fur and wpfulen clothing rugs and upholster ed furniture have greatly extended their held of damage as the black carpet beetle has somewhat similar habits to the moth the lohowing re marks maybe considered as applying equally to it these insects are most apt to m iltl ply in places where there is relatively little disturbance there is an un portant point and should be borne in mind as it suggests the reimdy care forethought and vigilance need to be exercised incipient ralsta tlods should be traced to their sourct and removed without delay to pre vent their spread clothing subject to damage when not in use snaula be brushed and beaten or be sent to the dry cleaners before being care fully stowed away in moth proof jag or boxes frequent attention u clothing not so protected is necessary during the wanner months of he year floor cracks especially when cover ed with rugs or carpets need o he tilled or cleaned out periodically the spaces behind baseboards and other woodwork should not be overlooked woollen lint dust and debris which collect in the cold air shafts of house furnaces form a source of infestation ando should be removed fpnn liny ie riigg and rarppts ffipelal
