tests sweet cafprau in the ne ws of the week hon charles punning is on his way across the ocean bent on rega his health by a leisurely sojourn in the british isles he goes back to england as one of canada s outstanding men back to tbe land he leftas an immi grant boy with his departure there has arisen much speculation about his future although be has tendered his resigna tion as minister of finance to the prime minister that gentleman publicly stated be doesnt want accept it but commenting on kings remarks mr dunning said very emphatically that his physical condition would not allow him to re turn to bis post and when mr dun ning says a thing he means it it can be accepted as almost a posi tive fact that the hardworking minis ter will not return to the cabinet that will leave a vacancy to be filled and it is just possible that the hon j l ralston may be the man chosen to succeed htm mr ralston was minister of defence in the former liberal cabinet it will be recalled no matter vho is chosen mr king realises only too well that it will difficult to get a man to do the job b mr dunning s competent way those who know the ottawa official circle intlmatel declare that in all the stress of canada s acute financial problems during tbe recent years the cabinet leaned on the finance minis ter for advice it was mr dunning s influence that kept the country s financial ihtp on an eien keel it was mr dunning who kept pointing his finger to the ruinous policy of other countries who tampered with currency it was mr dunning who kept reminding his fel low legislators that the scheme of inflation brought a direct loss to the pockets of all citizens reduced the value of insurance policies cut down the amount of goods the weekly pay envelope would buy and devaluated the life savings of a country s popu lation mr dunning reached the top the hard way a circumstance which kept telling him that there was no easy miraculous road toward financial re covery throughout the country the right route involved plenty of hard work sensible economy and diligent watching to safeguard the assets al ready accumulated by the people one of the significant notes of the week is a report reaching us that sev eral members of parliament have cm their vacations short this they are sticking close to their ridings and taking in picnics and public func ttons of every kind thats a
