death of james alexander chapman well known citizen ol brantford occurred saturday morn ing in the brantford general hospi tal mr chapman was born in onon daga township seventysix years ago ttoe son of the late mr and mrs jas chapman early scottish settlers he was one of a family of twelve of vbom three survive his loss mr fihapman resided in brantford for aitytwo years and for many years served as a member of the police de partment from which he retired in 1921 he was a member of the knights of pythias his wife formerly mar goret helen patterson predeceased w in 1934 he leaves to mourn ills loss two sons saxon p chapman georgetown ont james lloyd chap man hew westminster bc two sisters miss annie chapman guelph mips margaret ohapman huffalo n y and one brother george guelph the funeral was held on tuesday af 4wioon from the mcclelster funeral home with interment beside his wife in the family plot in mount hope cemetery brantford expositor mrs s r bews after a few weeks illness there pas bed away one of milton s most highly esteemed and popular citizens bertha m bews widow of the late samuel r bews died at her home in milton january 2nd 1940 bertha m bews was born on a farm near nelson town ge june 16 1871 she- was a daugh ttsl of tiie late mr and mrs chas harrison who belonged to the earliest pioneer families in the county of hal ton on february 8th 1898 she was married to samuel r bews mrs bews hasbeena resident of milton for over 50 years and been an active mem ber of the st pauls united church while she was interested in every de partment of church work she was a life member of the wjvis and her heart was in the missionary cause for several years she served on the board hamilton con ence branch andtater was president of milton wmjs for three years the sunday school was also her chosen afield of enthusiastic effort mrs bews first absorbing interest centred in a class of boys many orwhom enlisted 4n the world war desiring to do her part she teomom a life and since 1936 has held thetbfoc of reeve at the municipal elections held recently was again j claimed reeve and had he lived would have sit on the 1940 council always having the well being of jjie town at heart mr davis was a valued mem ber of the municipal government and kb place will leave a vacancy that wih be hard to fill he was also well known in halton county affairs and was instrumental in having the coun ty road connecting links paved in georgetown last summer mr davis was born in governeur ny but had received his education in brighton ont he had been a resident ot georgetown for the past 22 years where he made many friends and before his retirement from active work had been an employee in the power station of the canadian na tlonal electric railway deceased was a member of the presbyterian church the masonic order and in politics a conservative for a number of years he has been a director of the es quesing agricultural society i besides his widow he leaves to what would
