blue blouse an aviation poem in an old upstairs box mongst some dresses and frocks i ran on a treasure today twae a little blue blouse lying still as a mouse i that my sonny boy wore in his play then back thoughts to me flew of when older he grew a little blue school suit he wore and each morn when hed leave with his books tieath his sleeve i wo ild kiss him good bye at the doer then when teen age was due in a worksuit of blue denham overalls made in one piece to him what a charm to work home on the farm all summer the yields to increase then in early manhood how real handsome he stood an adonis a full six feet two athletic but neat from his head to his feet in- a late suit of new pin stripe blue but today hes oer there with a fleet of the air wearing wings on his breast proud and true as his plane flies so high through the clouds or clear sky in a uniform aviation blue then i placed that weemouse gently back in its house and i let fall a sad tear or two vok my heart does now yearn for my sonny s return in his sky pilots uniform blue 4b8 crawford st toronto ralph gordon just a soldier the editors corner meeting other editors while up in bruce county over the week end i had an enjoyable visit renewing- acquaintances with mr hugh ferguson publishes of the port elgin times and meeting for the flrt time art rogers jr general manager of the kincardine news mi ferguson purchased the times last summer coming to port elgin from detroit and qo is turning out ah excellent newspaper re cognition of this was recently shown by the c w j a when tie was pre cented with the joseph g clark memorial trophy for having the best paper in a town under 1500 both these men have up tolate plants and equipment and are producing newspapers and commercial work which are a real credit to the trade t t t t u men get married too we ran across an article in the blue bell bell telephone maga zlne which takes pitj on the poor males ho never get any publicity in a wedding its called men get married too john jones son of mr and mrs sam jones of pleasant villa be came the bridegroom of miss elizabeth smith at high noon today the ceremony took place at the home of the grooms parents mr jones was attended by mr brown as groomsman tli groom was the cynosure of all eyes blushing prettilv he replied to the questions of the clergyman in low tones but firm he was charmingly clad in a three piece suit consisting or a coat vest and trousers the coat of dark material was draped about his shoulders and tastefully gathered under the arms the pretty story was current among the wedding guesis that lhe coat was the same worn by his father and grandfather on their weddings days the vest was sleeveless and met in front it was gracefully fashioned with pockets and at the back held together with a strap and buckle con splcuous on the front of the vest was the grooms favourite piece of jewellery a fratrni y pin and from the upper left hand pocket was sus pended a lart in watch the brides gift to the groom which flash ed and gave tne needed touch of brilliance to a costume in perfect taste and harmony the gioott suit wi5 of dark worsted and fell from the waist in a straight lire almost to the floor the ievere simpllcltj of the garment was relieved bv the right pantalette which was caught up about four inchea by a boston garter worn underneath ree ling j st tit arti tic glimpse of brown holeproof above the genuint leu her shoes laced with strings of the same colour the effect was chic beneath the vest the groom wore blue galluses attacnedfore and aft to the trousers and parsing a graceful curve over each shoulder this pretty and useful part of the costume would have passed unnoticed had not the groom muffed the ring when the groomsman passed it to him when he stopped to recover the errant clrcet the blue of the galluses was prettily revealed his neck was encircled with a collar characterized toy a delicate pearl lint ol old fashioned celluloid and around the collar a cravat was loosely knotted exposing a collar button of bright metal the cravat extended up and down under he left ear with the studied carelessness which marks supreme artistry ir dress mr browns costume was essentially ike the grooms and ao the two stood at the altar a hush of admiration enveloped the audience at the complete harmony actually one could hardl have told one trom the other had it not been for a patch of court plaster worn bv the groom over the nick in his chin made by a safety razor neither mr jones nor mr brown wore a hat at the ceremony as miss elizabeth smith led the groom from t altarrit wa she w th veil and orange blossoms raising money there seems to be no end to the schemes for raising monej for lhe war with downtowners having a weekly draw on the war certificate charlle bartlett has won it thee past two weeks and the women raising 200 at a rummage sale and the lome scots ladles saving pea nut bags and the legion women having a tag day we learn every day of new ways to raise money in forest they have started a dutch auction every saturday night this is like a draw only more fun the auctioneer asks for bids on the article to be auctioned starting at 25c and going up a quarter at a time each bidder however pays only 25c for his bid when the amount col jected reaches a certain snt bidding stops and the draw is made it saves all the work involved in the usual draw where tickets are being sold by dozens of people and it takes several days before the exact amount of money realized is known in a dutch auction someone in the crowd is always the winner and the money is all taken in and counted tight on the spot total war new and tragic meaning has been given to the phrase total war by the recent march of events millions of hollanders then- homes in ruins their parents friends war means the citizens of oslo ground under the heel of a barbaric conqueror know what total war means the heroic belgians their homeland overrun b the tanks and flying col umns of an implacable roe know what total war means our own fighting men on land and sea and in the air face to face with the monster of force the twisted mind of hitw has created they too know what total war means we wonder if canadians living peacefully and going about their ac customed basks appreciate the grav ity of the hour bow filled with des tiny are the days that he immediately ihiad this is indeed a total war it is a war not of armies navies- and air forces alore it is a war or whole peo pies and to wage it successfully it is imperative that the total resources of our nation be directed to what must be our one consuming purpose to win thf war today a means has been provided in canada whereby everyone regardless o his station can do his bit to further this great crusade war savings certificates now being ffered by the dominion government enable the masses of canadians who are still fortunate enough to be liv ing in tlie dominion to make a direct and continuing contribution to can adas war effort to buy war savings certificates is an investment in patriotism an in estinetu in our own security and freedom an investment guaranteed by canada herself it is our plain duty yes a privi legr too to buy war savings cer tinea tea we too can serve by saving th ir t in erna ional railway was can idian entt prle according to o rothney wr tins in he canadian national magazine under the caption wh n the railroad cami to sher brook- mr rothney explains the lawrence and atlantic railroad todav part of the canadian national system was soon completed to the border and through to portland thus becoming not only the first trunk railroad ir canada but the first in ternatlonal rallwa in the world that wai in 18o2 su ce jien the line greatly developed u importance and the route today serves as a medium of ntercojrse between quebec province and ne v fngland territory ottawa week by week h drftn wtlumi total mobilization as adlrect result of the graveevents abroad the parliament of canada has decided to effect immediate mobluza tion of all human and material re sources not only for the proper prose cutlon of the war but also for the saf ety of this nation itself it is not an ordinary war measure but rather an enactment of an unusual emergency in fac non war bills that were sup posed to be presented in the house of commons have been placed aside on tte sessional agenda then again certain expenditures other than essen tial war matters will have to take a ho iday in the words of one states man with curtailments involving a cut in naif of the several estimates for publc works to 14951 776 direct relief and relief projects reduced to 20266 oou from 27 000 000 canadian national railways appropriations cut nearly two thirds agricultural estl mates dropped nearly 3 000 000 no grants to fairs or exhibitions and no special or supplementary estimates increased vigil on coasts on th atlantic and pacific coasts iround hudson bay on the gulf of st lawrence in labrador and along v whoe coast of the maritime pro vinces an increased vigil is maintained n yht ind day now by the mill tar j and naval intelligence who are steadily on the lookout for any signs of strange cratt b sen or air an elaborate com munications system by wire wireless and telephone connects over 200 points n an effective and protective net work whereb no enemy or unfriend craft can hop to escape timely de tectlon on the street may not realize it yet in these days the defense or any country must include proper protection against treason sab otage and subversive foreign propagan da just as much if not more as ag alhst any other important danger in volved in waging a war canada fias now recognized this fact and the gov eminent o preparations to suppress fifth column activities throughout canada whether they are carried on by organized elements or by those in dividuals who put partisan and per sonal considerations above those of national well being and safety are the main subjects of excited discus stons both inside and outside of the house of commons and the senate with the result that drastic changes may be expected shortly in the whole present set up of the defense of can ada regulations there are those legislators in ottawa who hold that the governments steps to combat the fifth column are too mild but at the same time there are others whe insist that there shall be no infringement of a canadian dt lzens rights even in wartime pointing out that some of the suggestions wmen have been made to the government t e far toe drastic and radical espec tally the enactment of a law similar to the notorious quebec padlock law the abol srrnent of the rights of hab eas corpu which forces the crown to produce a man for trial or numerous others that would cause canadians to be arrested and interned on mere sus piclon and later released to be brand ed in their own community as susplc ious characters consequently the government has created a parllamen tary committee to investigate and to report on what actions are advisable under the present grave conditions in order that the defense of canada regulations may provide proper pro tectlon against foreign agents who aim we may say and no doubt we do oh hes in the army and jus a private too but a private or a general hes a mother i pride and joy and th very laws of our democracy this committee has the power to send for persons papers etc and to examine witnesses under oath and report their observatl time t time 1n the houyr commons the officials on parliament wu are not inclined to minimize the dan gers of the fif th column but there likewise no disposition to become hysterical about it because they knojr exacuy what has been done and what is being done to combat it though much of this work cannot be publicized for certain state reasons especially the confidential work of the department of justice in ottawa under the lead ership of the rt hon ernest iw point and of the royal canadian mounted police under the guidance of commissioner s t wood in fact the secret service knows all lhe ring leaders and most of the folloitfers of fifth column organizations and this is why there have been so many arrests internments etc with few if any actual escapes from the jaw and why there has not been a single casel of serious sabotage in canada in c r war though a contrary impression a to have been created throughout this country actions against fifth ool- um activities have been carried out with great intensity and little publicnr for a long time the royal canadian mounted police have been adding new continually increasing their force by 600 men only recently not only for guard dutj but to keep a close sur veillance on- certain subversive ele ments combining their furious efforts with agents from various federal de partments for the purpose of working together so that factories producing essential war materials shall be prop erly manned and protected so that plots against the safety of the state shall be discovered in time to fore stall or arrest espionage activities in deed all information is carefully checked judged and acted upon quick ly aided in no small degree by the or der incouncil which widened and amplified the legal powers of the pol ice agencies in canada particularly that law which declares that all sub versive parties are illegal organizations and membership in them past or pre- ijent is a criminal act though it must be reported that certain subversive el ements nave destroyed their member ship lists and rushed to join trade un ions so that if these persons are ar rested they can say that this is an attack on trade unionism further more th magnitude of this problem can be realised when it is mentioned here that there are almost a r people n canada of either german ox italian origin with the additional re mark that these italians have increas ed over 47 since 1931 or a growth of over 40 000 and on the prairies out of the total population of 2415 000 ihere were 300 000 of german origin or 128 per cent though in all canada 72a 000 persons were of german ori gin nevertheless this belief in our democratic ijstem of government as free men or women rt ing far above all strict par ty votes in both the house of com mons and the senate are the surest and most efficient protection
