with th canadian forces in england margaret agnes munro daughter of new advertisements descending from an elevation high above the boiling canyon the road winds down into sunwapta valley which gradually broadens out at sunwapta falls a bidetroad permits a short dme to a thundering cataract in the sunwapta river about two miles west of sunwapta palls this rl ver joins the athabaska under which name it courses all the way to jasper town and beyond continuing down the highway for another fifteen miles the motorist crosses the athabaska river at the roaring athabaska palls and is now within about twenty miles of jasper the road is flanked on either side by towering mountain peaks and winds down the whirlpool and athabaska rivers into the smooth flats of a wide level valley clothed with poplars and evergreens about eight miles from jasper it joins the spectacular road coming down from angel glacier and mount edith cavell where the king and queen spent a pleasant hour din ing their recent visit to canada from here the road follows a winding course to jasper town headquarters of the largest national park in north amerl ca and a holiday resort of world wide renown in spite of the wild country through which it passes the highway has none of the terrors sometimes associated with mountain roads it consists of mainly long stretches and easy grades changes in direction are ac complished by means of smooth swee ping curves rather than sharp corners prom the luxury of the modern motor car breath taking scenes are revealed in unbroken but ever changing pan orama the highway not only com mands much of the finest mountain scenery in the world but because its entire length lies in national parks which arc game sanctuaries the op portunlty to see native fauna in nat ural su roundings is greater perhaps than in any similar area elsewhere everywhere lies the wilderness un changed and unspoiled et nowhere the visitor an hours drive from the comforts and resources of modem civ ilizataon thus opens a new page in the dev elopmetit of canada and a new chan nel of tourist travel the banff jasper highway unites canada s great est national parks but that is merely a symbol of its service its appeal to the traveller the nature student and lhe lover of the outofdoors is uni texsal in them it unites not merely parks bul peoples and nations ballinafad miss bena
