on long journey southwards and amateur ornithologists are busy studying that fascinating subject bird migration traffic on the park highways has diminished considerably and sight seeing is much more enjoyable than usual many visitors from the unit ed states who perhaps have been late in realizing that travel in the dotn inion is just as free from annoying restrictions as before the war axe thb year enjoying an autumn vaca tlon in canada s national parks and are finding it a most charming sea son for motoring and sight seeing autumn in canada is usually fol lowed by a very delightful period known a indian summer until the ad ent of this extra season man indians will assure you that winter is t 1 a long way off indian summer n ay only last a few days or it may extend over a period of weeks t ration arles from year to year but there is no mistaking its actual arrl val unlike the coming of the chi nook that warm breeze which blows n from the pacific and melts prairie snows almost over night there b generally a total absence of wind during inoian summer this pleas iih phenomenon has been extolled by early writers in both prose and verse md coi unuei to inspire poet and arlist or the present day although the term indian summer has be ome part of the english language and is now freely used throughout the english speaking world its real origin is someihlngoi a mystery the season which was perhaps first known as second summer appears to have been predicted to the earliest white settlers bj the native indians this would probably account for its being named ir dian summer at the beginning of the past cen turv this late return of summer was frequently referred to here is what john howleson wrote in 1821 the autumns of upper canada very much resemble those or britain october is usually a delightful dry month with mild days and clear frosty nights the early part of november is generally characterized by a peculiar state hit weather which the canadians term irdian summer the atmos phere has a haziness which makes distant objects appear indistinct and indefinite and a halo often encircles the sun at the same time a genial warmth prevails and there is seldom any wind the indian summer is so dellghtfu that one would almost sup pose the country where it takes place to be transported for a season to some celestial clime where the elements ever existed in harmony and acted in unl son it is extremely difficult to ex plain the cause of the regular ocur rence of this kind of weather for scarcely a year passes ha autumn oi which there are not some days of indian summer while much has been written of the vivid beauty of the canadian landscape during autumn only by get ting out into the open can one truly appreciate the spirit of the season words are but empty and cannot ade quately ascribe the thrill of its magic spell this is the season of the hun ters moon and while spring sum mer and winter each has its special appeal to the visitor the enjoyment derived from a trip through the nat lonal parks of canada in autumn is an experience which will not soon be forgotten these parks continue to rajuc among canada a major tourist attractions up to the end of august 1m0 the ma jority showed decided increases over the same period last ypar in th num ber of visitors received this is par ttcularly true of the mountain parks in the west banff jasper kootenay yoho and waterton lakes which had an increase of over 162 000 as oompar ed with the same period in 1839 out of a total of 534 017 visitors to these five parks 110 874 came from outside of canada mostly from the united states a gain of 22 per cent over last year no doubt the opening of the new highway linking jasper and banff national parks and the completion or the big bend highway had a good deal to do with this increase but there were also increases in the num annual meeting ol district cooperative the annual meeting of milton dis trict cooperative was held in the court house milton on sept 14th with a good representation present the financial statement showed a marked improvement in the current position of the company with the cash capital made up of the members loan units increased by approximately three thousand dollars president malcolm mcnabb in his presidential address sighted some ot the advantages the gooperative of fered the community and he was very optimistic as to the outlook for the future success of the cooperative mnnpffr stanley hall in giving his manager t report pointed out that the best advertisement the cooperative could have was the loyalty of the members he also said the cooper ative was rendering a service of real value in the matter of mixing fertl llzers and that with the departmen of agriculture carrying on a soil test ing programme in the county every farmer or gardener could have their soil tested and with the analysis of this could through the cooperative service purchase and have mixed ex actly the right mix for their parti cular soh requirements this service alone is a real asset to any communi t he renewed his statement of a year ago that he had received the friendly cooperation of the other business men of the town and that ns long a- he was manager of the cooperatue he would do his part to have this cooperation continued mr j e whltelock was present and took pan in some of the discussions supporting mr hall in his thought on the loyalty of the members this of course e l tailed some education b also said he liked the idea of holding a banquet at n later date the meeting approved the repeal of by law ho 13 and the amendment of no 14 15 and also expressed ls approval of -the- aotlon taken by the directors in employing a quallflec chartered accountant to audit the books of the co operative although this had cost me money it was well worth the expenditure a vote of appreciation and thanks as tendered the directors and man agement for their efforts la directing the affairs of the cooperative for
