session ayletta- was read from mr john byersi ex reeve of oakville tendering his reslgnatlun as a member of the good roads com mlttee it was moved toy mr gilbert sec onded by mr campbell that mr finney be appointed to the good roads committee for the years 1941 1942 1943 1944 and 1945 before the motion could be put be fore the council mr harold cleave reeve of georgetown rose to his feet and said mr warden i would like to voice my objection to this appo fit ment i have nothing whatever against mr finney but i think or the time he has served in the county council he has been very well treat ed he has been warden chairman of the finance committee and is also serving on other committees i think these things should be handed around more impartially i have been a mem ber of this council seven years and in that time it has never yet been my privilege to serve on the road com mlttee i think there are too many getting too many committee fees and being shabbily used i also think too lew are given responsibilities dr heslop i would like to know just how this road committee is formed it is my opinion that town ship reeves are given the preference and the fifth membership goes to the one who gets there quickest mr hulmer perhaps i might say that neither mr campbell nor my self has any wish to serve on this com mlttee as neither of us feel that we would have the time to give to it at present however my opinion of the road committee is that it should be formed by committee of five with the warden as exoffido member mr cleave 1 must say when the striking committee came back with their report at the last meeting i was frankly speaking disappointed for one thing i feel when these commit tees are struck new members should be given responsibilities whether they want it or not mr finney i have always tried to do my best in every way and as re gards the road committee i think it only fair that preference should be given to the reeves of the four town ships as they naturally represent i greater percentage of mileage in the county mr campbell perhaps i should ex plain to the council that i was offer ed the position of chairman of the penance committee but declined mr finney i appreciate that ex planatlon mr pmney was appointed chair man of the finance committee mr hall i am in favor of the four township reeves being given the pre- mr chalmers i am in favor of that too but i think the extra man should fee moved around finally the resolution appointing mr finney was put before the council and carried but that did not end the discus- mr hilkoer started the ball rolling aealn by saying that he was still of the opinion that the warden should ik an exoffldo member of the road committee and that two new mem hers be appointed and that mr kerns meeting of the geo branch of the canadian red cross society was held in the public library last thursday january 30th with president leroy dale in the chair treasurer g w mcuntock present ed his report for the calendar year 1940 which showed total receipts of 428446 of which 75046 were in uh paid pledges after disbursements which included payments to red cross headquarters of almost 2 000 ca balance on hand at january 1st w 113840 mrs p b coffin chairman of the purchasing committee reported that 3900 had been handled by this com mittee since the formation of th branch a little over a year ago 281 78 of this amount had been spent at headquarters and tbe re mainder locally and at wholesale houses this committee had also looked after six british war guests purchasing clothing and christmas cheer for them to the value of 25 00 this sum had been raised for this pur pose at a tea speaking for the finance commit tee g w mcuntock compared the state of finances as of december 1939 charge chairman mrs a reeve of the soldiers comforts committee explain ed that cigarettes and parcels had been sent to george and district soldiers overseas during the past mon ths several organisations had donat- funds for these and the pabus had heartily supported a tag day last local war savings campaign under way next week plans are being laid by the local war savings committee under chalr- man col gordon cousens for the lo cal drive for pledges which will be a part of the national campaign be ing conducted on behalf of tbe sale of war savings certificates the lo cal sarnia on tuesday januv ary 28th after an ulneas of scmes months duration the former martha kennedy she was bom in ge and was a daughter of the lata mr and mrs maurice kennedy she was at one time a
