the georgetown herald wednesday evening february- 19th 1941 georgetown trounces elora 74 in first playom game came ended abruptly when elora team left the ice lights turned out and god save the king played to prevent freeforall return game here tomorrow night o elora experienced their flrat buck- af last night when to order to quell s delicate situation wbioh arose at the ajcena light war turned off and the king played taking aeten trimming at the hands of our highly- gated intermediate squad the rooks could cot stand the pressure and with jdx minutes still left to play la the third period took their team from the ice but lets start from the begton- log in the beginning ttae scheduled- ojoa referee failed to make his appearance due no doubt to the atormy weather after holding up the game for more man half an hour both clubs agreed to accept the ser vices of percy blackburn of george town to referee the same blaok- tnirhls by the way an official ohjl referee listed in the ojla list of re ferees the first period went along fine un to a few biased sport enthusiasts in the elora village became dissatisfied with the decisions being made in the meantime the elora goal judge failed to put on the red light when goals were scored and be had to be re placed or should we say switched from goaljudge to timekeeper by the time the third period rolled along both fans and players let their ima ginary grievances run riot and when perkins was being penalized for rough tactics this player lost his head com pletely he exhausted his vocabularly of cuss words on the referee who to turn increased his penalty to five min utes tins was not enough however for perkins and he crashed blackburn into the boards and drew for himself match penalty- meaning of course be would not play any more to that same this he continued to protest even after the game had got nicely under way again and involved the rest ol bis teammates who skated off the ice after georgetown had scored their eventh goal of the game the penal- lyumekeeper also became unruly and tore up the referees report which had to be later pieced together it was at this point that the spectators milled around the georgetown players and the referee threatening bodily harm and only for the coolness of the local lads and the blackout a nasty situ ation might have arisen elora plays the return game here on thursday tomorrow night with coah to count on the round and it is bopela better feeling may prevail and that the dubs will show a more friendly spirit the rocks have a food team and the threegoal lead wtuch the local club now have may b none too large when these teams met again the winder will meet up with fee fergus thistles jn the finals but on with the game murphy opened the scoring early in the first period when he jundaayj then toe s pass tram close m took the lead for a few mom- ante when the rumens brothers j bad h on passe s from reid and mil lar added two tut goal however ifstai luawiii to other this was de cidedly george period and had not the elora goalie been deckedwith horseshoes the score would have been much larger- but the third and final period turn ed out to be the most unfortunate one the elora team smarting under the beating they were taking resorted to rough taotlcs and when called by the referee were not willing to take it like real sportsmen and thus ended after fourteen minutes of play what could have been a good game in this period richardson opened the scoring on a pass from marao mooney added another while miller served a penal ty bakogeorge went off for boarding and reid scored for elora two min utes later reid flicked to- another perkins then drew his match penalty and georgetown scored their final goal with davidson scoring on mur phys pass at this poinb elora could stand the threat of georgetown pil ing up a good margin no longer and decided to throw in the sponge murphy played an outstanding game with the other players equally turning in nice arena when guelph took their home game there with a deter mined effort to hand the a team at least one defeat in the season guelph having won the game here the ice was a bit sticky which made it a little hard going ai times but on the whole the game was fast and hectic it was an exceptionally clean game throughout with only two penalties being meted out dude lindsay paced the winners attack with three goals while kem- sheads pair of markers followed in quick succession heyd and meron were the most outstanding for guelph with two apiece while heyds rushes were very effective and put the pep in the guelph team georgetown went into the lead in the first period when lindsay scored twice on passes from murphy and mooney kemshead opened the second frame with s goal on wards pass only to have meron solo for guelphs first goal ten seconds later the next counter came when kemshead soloed took a shot then grabbed his own re bound and scored heyd then drew a penalty and davidson added another for ge at the eighteensec ond mark guelph bombarded the lo cal citadel and to a scramble boyd netted the second goal for his team guelph made it hot for the home sters to the third period snoring three times to the locals twice and looked as though they would tte the score at any moment heyd meron and morrison were guelphs goalget ters while mooney and lindsay got the george pair alcotfs copper cliff team ably coached by rody gegear won a couple of exciting games from the rslerx possmvs e ssissttlvstil calder cup emblemfthe ontario w rw midget championship copper cjlff re when we look back at the attendance records of a midget series a few years ago and the attendance at the games friday and saturday last week one wonders if the efforts to foster midget hockey here were worth while or whether it is a changed georgetown public or one which easily forgets but those who did see the playoff certainly were given their moneys worth bsldes two exciting games a dormybrook took place at the friday night game that outdid any we can re soft lee rolling pucks and hardchecking frayed the tempers of some players and before the referees could seise control of the situation the players were hatifflwg it out to fine style with their fists a terrible thing said gordon alcott under whose initiative the teams were brought together it wul not hap pen at saturdays game be said or the series will be called off and neither it did both teams were addressed by alcott before- the game when he pointed out that while the most prominent part was to win the friendship of the two teams was also at stake he said nothing should marr the congeniality between the people of copper cliff and georgetown it was a treat to see the boys to the final game they took the bumps and liked it and after it was all over and cop per cliff won the teams shook hands and gave three cheers and a tiger for each other the copper cliff boys were a fine bunch and we welcome them back at any time and with copper cliffs the calder cup which georgetown had held for a season the boys from the north won it back in two slrn ight games but we must give credit where credit is due they had a great team faster heavien trickier than our own boys georgetown gave their best but were just not quite good enough although they nearly foroea a third game with a royal finish to saturdays game some of the members of george town band augmented we believe by a few of the acton players were on hand to greet the ouelph georgetown game at acton arena last thursday night it would be a nice gesture if they would turn out to the playoffs here as their music was ap preciated and added to the pleasure of the evening have you too heard the current to town most ever has but they are almost without foundation seems acton arena c f ered the geor hockey obib bigger percentage on the gate racetote and someone started the nmiorthat they were going to take the piayoff games here in order to settle this situation the hockey otob and the local arena board met man evening and only the friendliest feelings vailed the board o moral a financial oo it was accepted by the otab to show thatr stnoartty the board sign ed a good stse casque for the club tte will not see you etuok said the presi dent of the arena board 8 left have a whm te mo the play off game wfll not be played to acton gedrgetowners tfic nickel town kids were a heavier and faster team than the iqpals and though they had things pretty much their own way to both games the georgetowners were in there trying ail the time over two hundred spectators were- on hand for the opener on friday night and they got their moneys worth in excitement copper cliff took full advantage of their superiority in speed and showed the result of bet ter teamwork right from the opening whistle in quick succession they piled up a fourgoal lead starting with a goal by robert just after the whistle blew which was followed by counters by mccarthy and dlgby and another by robert ormle carter tallied for the locals before the end of the period 858 ru schenk got another early in oie second to account for two of the jjee georgetown goals the last half of the game more than made up for a penaltyless first half and the referees had rfll they could do 3j to handle the highspirited groups bie j oreilly drew a penalty for copper cliff followed by penalties to cofell and butler for fighting fists swung freely from this point on with practi cally every player with the exception of the goal keepers gracing the penalty box at one time or another bob johnston left the game with a cracked knuckle and harold sclienk received a nasty cut on the face while minor bumps and bruises were notic ed among the other warriors between battles copper cliff annexed three more goals to give them a command ing 7 2 lead after the last riot both teams were warned that the game would end unless they settled down to playing hockey and the subsiding min utes were a little calmer carter got the final score of the game to make it 7 3 for copper cliff 1946 715 646 1 1530 1022 fuhest ox ob bbekar otub ban given much of too on page i georgetown played a much game on saturday afternoon when the two teams met again before handful of spectators copper cuff was without the ser of johnston whose injured hand kept him on the sidelines dlgby and robert gave copper cliff a twogoal lead to carry into the second period georgetown missed dosens of scoring opportunities to this first frame finding it hard to do anything with the pock when they got toto copper cliff territory in the second period walker scored and geo put on a rally which worried the northern boys far awhile but they came back strong with three goals to once more gain a wnim tog lead schenk soared on a wonder ful shot from the blue line and digfay came right gack with a hard one from centre ice mring it 6 2 when the whistle blew georgetown came into their own to the last period and
