office from day to day and i can speak for the other boys who enjoy your weekly paper and look forward to seeing it come every week as it keeps us in touch with the peopledn general and the progress of the town and we do appreciate your- paper as we know jthe extra work it means and each one of us have a different ad dress and then the herald comes free to us so i feci that each one of us should drop a line to say thank you and wish you every success in your business as it is not all play to be an editor of a town paper as i have hadtne misfortune of be ing in the hospital for the last five where your ear ww go without gai up hill there are many camps in kjs and one camp has 16000 soldiers ths printer- has hesnnrite ralld with very little snow so the- boys could carry on with tbete lng us to take block of ourselves and see whether they hae any ground- for their charges that there is always a crying need of money to run our churches i speak for the united church is quite true but it is equally true that in order to interest people in giving they must first be thoroughly and sincerely converted to the need and worthiness of the cause here then is the first task of the church and if we may compare the wholehearted response of all classes of people to the demands as thelr time labor and money since the present war began with the response to the appeal of the church it would seem that the church has failed in this respect yet important as the winning of the war is that the world may be better and safer for our short sojourn here how infinitely more vital should the appeal of the church be since eternity with our king and sariour 1s the objective tor which it labors does the average pulpit of today with its fixed salary furnished up- todate home and honored place in the community or the average paw enjoying many of the luxuries of life present a picture of need or of can- em far our neighbor the poor the sick the heathen jesus said- if any man will alter me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me where i ask you reader and myself is the cross borne for his sake in our uvea today are we seeking to win souls for his kingdom or are we mor ceraed with building larger and bet ter churches paying and receiving larger salaries demanding finer homes and mare comforts and luxuries our leader commanded that we take no anxious thought for the morrow lay not up for yourselves treasure on earth but we take thought and lay up treasure not only for tomorrow but for years to come not oaring for his promises to pro vide nor caring that millions for whom he died are perishing of hun ger for both physical and spiritual food the rich young ruler was a model young man and professing christian yet jesus saw his need and said sell all that thou hast and ghve it to the poor and he went away sorrowful would we do other wise if asked to give up our bank native instrument of hungary will be the northern messenger offers the weeks most pleasant human
