dubbin m sorter farade you will recall that the shipping looses of the empire for the month of april were announced recently while the total losses for the month did sound large yet they were below tne monthly average since the war com menced the announcement called to mind the remarks that a wealthy buf falo gentleman made some years ago as a hobby he had an 800 acre farm in lincoln county ontario and half of this farm he used for fruit trowing the other half for regular farming and on it he had thoroughbred jerseys shipping their milk to nis home city but hard luck is no respecto even of wealth and nls herd developed a cer tain disease and had to be destroyed a reighbour remarked to him that he was sorry to hear of his severe loss and the gentleman replied if we did n t have these belongings we woulon t lose them perhaps if we looked at the empirs shipping loss in that way they wouran t look so bad the em pire still f the ships to lose these ships still sail the sven seas other empires haven t the ships and the lew that they may have are tied up in some srfle haven under those clr cumstances they aren t losing many snips in comparison to our losses in other wards if we didn t have those ships we wouldn t be losing them the international baseball league standing looks quite natural with tor onto at the foot of the class we stil think that toronto deserves a medal of some sort for sticking with its ball team the way they do the dally pa pers still use plenty of space for the doings of heir team and the radio finds time for ball news as well while we dislike to even admit that e think it yet hard ball seems to be on the way out why we do not know soft ball with its simpler rules and perhaps also because of the fact that it usu ally produces more runs thus giving the fans more to cheer for is possibly taking its place while it is quite a feat for a hardbair to pitch nine innings without allowing even one hit yet the fans get very little to become excited about during a game of that kind we still like to watch a game of hard ball however this is 1941 and somehow or other it seems to have outlived its popularity personally we are not interested in the reported attempt to inaugurate earlier4iploslng of business places loc ally however we conducted a bust ness of our own from 1905 up until sept 1939 and perhaps our opinion might be of interest to somebody our line was that of a bakery and along with it we handled icecream when we first commenced business we thought that like all other bakeries of that time that we had to keep open early and late but after a few years of these long hours we decided that life was rather short for that sort of thing and we closed at six o clock sim ilar to other places of business in spite of the earlier closing we found that our business showed an increase rather than a decrease and this ap plied to the amount of ice cream that we sold as well the late hours that seem to be rule in all small towns now are really absurd and stores could close at 10 o clock without losing any business at all in fact we think that any business man that has to keep open from 8 in the morning until 12 at night in order to do enough bus ness should take stock of himself and see if he wouldn t be better off work lng for somebody else take our can adian banks for instance they are open short hours and apparently have n t done so bad should a limit of 10 o clock closing on saturday nights be introduced we might find the church pews better filled on sunday morn lng a few years ago we stayed over night in the city of sarnla at that time we were living in a small town and we were interested in the satur day night trading in the city the streets were lined with cars and the sidewalks were lined with promenad ers mother and dad were sitting in the front seat of the sedan watching the folk walk by on the sidewalk the youngsters had the light on in the back of the car and were sitting the back seat reading the funnies had these stores not been open the whole family could have been much more comfortable at home why not get together and set a closing hour saturday nights within reason and thus give every body their required weekend rest you will remember a few years ago when lindbergh went to england to live in order to obtain some privacy that seemed to be denied him in his own country at that time we thought it quite a compliment to the qnptre recently rudolph hess or germany escaped in a plane and landed scotland at the moment we are not sure of hesss reason for escaping from germany however it looks as though he too fled to the british isles for safety s sake it too was quite a compliment to britain even though hes wasn t exactly a welcome visitor social and personal miss joan hale has regiments were amalga mated and became part of the fifth infantry brigade during the general reorganization of the canadian twihh fn december 1936 more lome scots will be arriving in hamilton as the regiment recruit up to strength the spectator learned and the standard barracks which has been empty except for the trades school staff since the departure of the perth regiment win become a busy place once more another interesting item appeared in the dally column tt the lines it read as follows plenty of equipment appears to be available for the lome scots bramp ton orangevule georgetown oak- ville unit now stationed in the stan dard barracks under command of lieut col r v conover e jj this regiment was mobilized only two or three weeks ago but already complete uniforms with fuu web equipment and even steel helmets have been issued and respirators are on the way at present the unit is busy making itself comfortable in the southern wing of the standard barracks that sec tion formerly occupied by the 1st bat talion rjlli and later bv the 11th- 69tn and 41st- 102nd field batteries rca and the perth regiment the unit is doing very well too with its recruiting campaign it be gan its mobilization with the advan tage of a reserve battalion at good strength and these reservists volun teered readily for active service op company commander told this column that moi jian 65 per cent of the men of his company volunteered im mediately the call for mobqtmticn came and although a few of these were turned down for medical i there are still around 60 per the active company this record is typical of the other com panies of the battalion wnich has al ready shown remarkable esprit de corps despite the fact that it is drawn from a dispersed recruiting area amoe the various companies were scattered over central ontario two in bramp ton one in oakville one in orange vule and one in milton moreover nowhere in this area are ihcre big concentrations of population from which the battalion might ex pect to draw larg numbers of men and its success so far is a great tribute to the organization which the regi ment has built up around the fine tra ditions of the old lome rifles and the peel and dufferin regiment n p b harrison secretary township of esquesinj tate notice that a court of itevtakm will be held to the council chamber stewarttown on monday the tad day op
