is not unlike measles it is apt to break out at any time and la any place however we never thought to look f or tt in a girls softtxol team we always were a little slow that way never on the watch for interest ing happenings nke romance the team hadnt been doing so well that year and new players were needed but where to get them that was the questkm we alao hod a girls basket ball team that same year and one of the girls that played basketball look ed like a good prospect for solball we asked her how she would like to try softball and she admitted that she rather liked the game but knew very little about it however she agreed to turn out to practice which she did by the way this particular girl had been christened bridget what a name to give a girl like her we always thouicht we all called her the latter part of that name jet jets very pres ence had a snap to u that soon bad its eftectrfcn the team but jet her self wasrft satisfied with her progress on this particular day that w6 have in mind she stepped up to bat and us likely that you know that lull that comes in a ball game after the pitcher has stepped into the box and just be fore the first throw it was during this lull that one of the boys that was watching the game spoke up and told jet that wasn t the correct way to hold the bat he was one of these chaps that never has much to say and even yet we can recall the little that he did say much better than we can recall the remarks of others that were more liberal with them per haps it wasn t so much what he said this da but it was the gentlemanly way that he said it that made it stick jet took it all in good part and her reply was come on and show me the proper way then this chaps r was murray and he immediate ly stepped up to show jet the correct way to hold that bat he tried to place those hands of hers on the bat correctly and he told us afterwards that it was like trjrtjbg to tie a neck tie on another boy easy enough to do rt on oneself but a different story when tielng it on another not to be outdone murray stepped in back of jet and putting- his arms around her had those hands properly placed at once it all looked quite correct to us however the other girls all say that was the moment that the romance started we dont think so though i anyway it wasnt long until jet could grab that bat the correct way like a veteran the team commenced then to go places and jet proved to be the real leader that she always was it was she that had the correct advice in the pinches and although she wasn t captain of the team she was the real leader you dldn t have to be too wide awake to noiace tnat the end of the season found our team and the team from bayton tied for first place and as the season was getting ou it was decided to play a sudden death game we thought tho group title was in the bag for sure however you can t always tell the i score at the end of the first half ol the ninth was bayton 12 and our team 11 the first girl up hit a fr out to center field for the first out the next batter sent a grounder down the first base line and that made it 2 down jet was the next batter up and she knocked a drive out to right field and i pulled up at third base what a hand she got that day the next batter hit a grounder down the third base line and landed safely on first base the next batter bunted and the bases were loaded the picture looked different now just before the first pitch to the next batter we noticed that same lull that we spoke of before jet must have been thinking of that other day lull as well she stepped off the base momentarily and over went trie ball and the game was over we often admired jet when we were winn ing but we never admired her as much as we did that day immediately she was her old self again and gathering tlie rest of the team together she led in the three cheers for the winner beating them to it it was then that we always though that the romance startea murray appeared from some place or other and away the two of them went arm in arm we always w ourious to know just what it was uiat murray said to jet that day no doubt jet remembers it anyway we should have a proper ending for a story of this kind so we are borrow ing a verse of burn s lifting it bodily from the cotters saturday night 0 happj love where love like this is found heartfelt raptures bliss beyond compare 1 ve paced much
