cessity for conservation of time energy and money it had been- decided f to hold only one session and to con dense the program to include essen tials only members and friends from oakvllle georgetown and acton met with those of milton union at 2 pxa- to join in a devotional period jed by mrs w e robertson milton the quiet impressive reading of the many exceeding great and precious promises from gods wordsevived the thought that drayer as conceived of by the saints of old is ou secret weapon in our conflict with uhe pow er of evil one which no enemy can destroy but which we yourselves through disuse o misuse may ren der impotent the period of prayer which follow ed later in the program combined with the dosing quiet hour led by mrs j mcduffe and mrs a harker of oak- viuef served to further strengthen the morale of this small unit of the na tlonwide army of temperance women banded together in defense of home and native land against an enemy within the gates which whether in peace or war sabotages mans strug gle upward toward soul freedom the review of the years work pre sented in the reports from both ooun ty and local leaders showed a variety of activities carried on chief among which must be placed the educational program amongst the children the report of mrs r mcdufle mil ton county superintendent of essay and poster contest work which is carried on annually in the schools throughout canada showed the work to be well worthwhile in stimulating interest in the study of scientific tem perance by our boys and girls mrs w g marshall georgetown spoke of the value also of medal contests in elocution in developing temperancemindedness both in school and home reporting a successful contest held recently in georgetown she strongly urged an extension of this work throughout the county the treasurers report by mrs j bell milton reminded us also of our share in what is probably the most effective work by the unions of our province viz that of providing the services of a fulltime field secretary miss rosamund duff whose lecture alcohol what it is and what it does is being given each year to thousands of students in many of the schools of the province public high and normal as well as to church young peoples societies and womens organizations mrs galbraith muton reported on the work of temperance educa tion in sunday schools in cooper ation with the ontario religious ed ucation council of the churches each year the wctu conducts a nation al study course in scientific temperance through the sunday schools willing to cooperate in some centers this work is well done though in halton the work heeds to be intensified and ex tended through cooperation of par ents and sunday school workers some church schools are doing ex cellent work in temperance educa tion through the use of posters and lantern slides obtained through the offices of the ontario temperance fed eration in toronto the report of the press secretary i mrs c b dayfoot georgetown told of efforts made to place before the reading public information in regard to the effect upon community welfare of the use of beverage alcohol stress ing the necessity for the exercise of theygreatest care that all statements made in press work be quite accurate and uptodate she reminded those in terested in making estimates of bever ageroom expenditures that changes had recently been made in the regu- latona which would affect such calcu lations the amount of a municipal liquor control board cheque is 20 of the provincial tax on beverageroom sales according to information recently re ceived through the ontario temper ance federation the provincial gov ernment now takes seven cents per gallon 160 on on beer sold in bev eragerooms tn place of six cents as formerly the size of the beer glass has been reduced from 10 to 94 oa which retails at the same price the unions regular work for the comfort ol soldiers and sailors has naturally been much stimulated by the present unprecedented need oc casioned- by the war and mention was made particularly of the county share in the provision by the provin cial union of a mobile kitchen for our troops in england the
