bsftisaltion on the radio the re mark was made that at this years exhlbiuon they were going to ham homemade bread exhibited that would be 100 perfect it that state ment were correct that one exhibit alone would be worth going to see taere never has been nor there never in all probability win be a 100 per fect loaf of bread when we remem ber that even one missplaced cell in the texture of w loaf of bread would be an linpenf eciion we can readily un derstand thai 100 perfection is im possible mfact we would be surprls- lf there is a loaf of homemade bread at any exhibition anywhere that would acoreleven 80 perfect you might be interested to know how bread is judged the external features are volume colour of crust symmetry of form- evenness of bake character of crust break and shred the internal features are colour of crumb texture of loaf grain taste and smell if the judges know their business and its likely ttiey do or they wouldnt be judging bread we dont think that very many exhibitors at any exhibition will ever get even 80 perfect we duwt notice any tiger lilies out for the twelfth of july this year but we noticed our first ripe tomatoes that day it seemed to be early to us at least and ripe toma toes on the twelfth of july would be considered early even in the niagara peninsula we tried an experiment last winter that might be of interest to some of our readers in september we planted a few tomato seeds of a variety that we would use in the ordinary season for staking we kept row plants and after transplanting them several times set them out permanently in tndhidual large sizwl flower pots we placed them in our southern windows when they arrived at the blossoming stage there were of course no bees around to polonlae them so we did that chore by hand wring a f n camelshair brush for the purpose only two of the plants set fruit so we discarded the others and the re maining two produced quite a nice lot of fruit the first ripe one was picked on me 7th of march they continued to bear and to ripen and as the plants were still fresh looking we set them out in the garden when ttie weather became warm enough they seemed to take a second lease on life after being set out and tliey are still pro ducing fruit we got quite a kick out our experiment incidentally it wasnt these particular vines that had ripe tomatoes by the twelfth of july they were on our regular summer sea son plants this bbcent ruling regarding the sale of gasoline looks like a step forward service station owners may now even become atoua with their families we wonkier if some thing similar couldn t be worked out or other buslnessee whose employees work long hours and sundays as wen trie dairies for instance and also ttfr restaurants there are many ways that every one of us can help to save the waste of gasoline we notice trucks from out of town coming long distances to at- tempt to do our local tradesmen out of some business naturally we blame the truck owners for this sort of thing thinking that perhaps they should stay at home and do business where they are assessed and pay taxes the remedy however lies in our own hands refuse to buy anvthms from them and see how soon they quit this unfair practice another way that we can help save the gasoline waste is by dome without so much delivery service it lsnt so much the gas that may be wasted by a trip out with a spool of thread or of one pound of prunes but it is me starting and stopping so often by delivery trucks that eats up the gas you can thl of many other ways that each of us can put into practice that will help in our own humble way to save this precious fluid and in that way help win this war news parade continued front page 1 to attend this time honoured institu tion of late years the fair has been held on thursday due to a saturday datt being impossible to get and its not only back to a saturday fair but its back to the 25c admission with so many calls for war services lhe pair board felt they could do their part by lowering he admission this year ana we say that the 25c admission should see the fair grounds again echoing with the happy voices of the friendly crowds it entertained a few years back the fair board is putting forth an ef fort this year to not only keep the fair on a high standard for the farm folk as in the past but also to provide more entertainment for the town people this year instead of the old time fakir left to provlae a midway of whatever happened to come along the board is leasing the entire faci lities of a midway company which is providing the best entertainment pos sible for country fairs this and other features will be announced from time to time until fair day what the citi zens are asked to do is to invite their friends from far and near to meet this year aa in years past at georgetown pair help make that timehonoured logan meet your friends at george town pair come true too pair day september 12th and 13th can you be enlisted the eaqueslng agricultural society ho sponsor the georgetown pair are out to enlist a bigger army of exhibi tors exhibitors lor the hall are in great demand especially in the bak ing domestic science and fruit and vegetable lines other classes usually draw a good entry and although lar ger exhibits are welcome more ef ion win be given to getting out the above mentioned classes housewives ire urged to enter their baking and domes 1c science products it adds something to uie hall display that at tracts many lmtors plans should be laid early as the fair is less than two months away are sunday school picnics becoming a thing op the past one might ask this question after attending one of these affairs recent ly and have good reason for it why we can remember a few years back how everybody in the life of the church young and old would be keyed up months before the date or the sunday school picnic was an nounced and then when it finally was announced could haroiy wait until the day arrived sunday school picnics usually took train excursions in those days and three and four cars would be packed with happy excited people off to burlington beach or some other just as enticing a spot but nowa days it seems more like a struggle to get enough boys and girts out to make up a picnic what can the reason be are the sunday school picnics dull and drab affairs or is something tak ing their place some interest gone that theretofore existed and here again we are inclined to lay this con dition to the advent of the motor car fn everincreasing numbers it lsnt that heretofore existed and here and drab affairs but that the boys and girls yes and grownups too are so used to car riding that the trip does not entice them any so used to be ing at beaches and parks that this outing is just another item m the course of a sammcra holidays noth ing to get excited about just rou tine for uie underprivileged perhaps that the sunday school superinten dents and teachers have not allowed to die out nor should they for al though the crowd is small man friendships can be renewed and t few happy hours enjoyed together yes we attended at least one sunday school picnic this year and we think we felt a utile better for it tim spirit of the sunday school ptcntcs may die down but we dont think it will ever die out low viaory in keeping with our policy of handling noth ing tit the finest guaran
