paper s week or so ago we noticed some very interesting pointers for bowlers which we paas along to the readers of this you roll a ball on a grassy track and smile when it nestles beside the jack the enemy smites it a hearty whack he smiles at you and you smile back ibats bowls vy v v m advice to skippers the follow ing adaptation form wordsworth oc- reason flan the temperate win foresight wisdom skill a perfect skipper nobly planned to warn to comfort and command v v v tills stanza generates the qualities of a good sklry perfectly but a few of the details may prove interesting and instructive especially to thirds and others who have aspirations for leadership v v v a skippers job is to asdst each nan to do his allotted work by com famed play- a lead to place both bowls near the jack a second to con oudate and guard gains the third to convert adverse heeds or to secure an advantageous position and the skipper to leave welpenough alone or to do what has been left undone v v v a capable skip studies position the relative value of played bowls book around or in front of the jack he mat play according to view from the mat as wan at from inspect uon of the head overaireotdcn is a mistake as it may destroy initiative and often irritates ptayen y v v the um of front bowfa for a fol low through should not be overlook ed it is frequently easier than draw ing around a barricade when a player is apt to be heavy or too wide if a bowl looks inviting as a teat for the enemy it should be removed for short ends iwomouon scores more bowls than the draw and therefore the leads and seconds should try to have their bowls just in front of the kitty v y v a good skip plays to the score if the opposition is being outclassed never let up such a procedure may be responsible for a wonderful come back however greediness should be avoided as a safe one is much better than a probable two it u foolish to try a trail for a trig end when the opposition is lying a hand- ful try to cut ouvas a bowl sav ed may be a shot earned v v v mayers should be encouraged u confide difficulties and preferences in the skip during the match and ttius avoid the useless post mortem after ward cooperative comradeship is vastly superior to the officious do as you retold attitude it encourages individual brilliant play and develops that team spirit which enables a rink with average skill and ordinary luck to make an excellent record v v v the skip should be a good bowler master ol every shotbut his sue cess will often depend more on his personal qualities than on his actual skill he must be able to get the best out of his men praising the good shots and cheerfully accepting the bad ones and never forcing a man to play a shot he doesn t fancy v v v above all the skipper should pre serve a happy medium between talking too much and not talking at au a silent fool may pass for wise in proverbs solomon has sung so if a sklppership you prize take my advice and hold your ton gue as w ee it no doubt there has beip a certain amount of inconvenience experi enced by some motorists due to the new regulations regarding the re strioted sale of gasoline compared to what some other countries are put- ung up with though those hardships scarcely warrant being mentioned from time to time we may be called upon to get along without same other luxuries that we seem to ihlnk have become necessary we understand that before long we may have uf do without cellophane wrappings and also do without wax wrappers on bread wrapped bread does seem like t very sanitary way of handling bread and yet it can be distributed without be log wrapped in a satisfactory sani tary manner the wrapping of bread has affected its palatabllity and has given it a smothered synethle taste and we would welcome a return to unwrapped bread another modern luxury that we will be called upon to do wlbhout is sliced bread the idea of slicing was introduced by some of the large bakeries in an attempt to put one over on their smaller com petitors however it dldn t do them any good as almost all bakeries slice bread today it is quite a waste of time and labor for which the baker gets no extra return and it also is respon jible for a ctrtain amo tnt of waste as we see it a return to the better tast ing unwrapped bread would be a benefit to the wheat grower as it would mean an increase in bread con sumption due to its better flavor when unwrapped it iftoild mean a saving in both time and labor to the baker which would spell more profits and it would be an advantage to the consumer as he would get a belter flavored loafjfo sum it all up we woild coneiudcthat if we hae to go back to unwrapped bread we could state it mils way hon pstly its an ill wind that blows body good if you read the ealtorlal page of the toronto star its likely that you may have noticed these short poems that appear on that page quite often recently we have noticed vera by edna jacques who is now liv ing in toronto it was poems by how ard ernst though that we had in mind in writing these lines he is a clifford ontario boy and we recall him attending high school just a few years ago he was never very strong and lately has been slipping and for the last few years has been confined to the san at weston he seems to have his better days and then isritj so well again and you can see this in his poems perhaps tbe next time that you notice one of his poems you will recall these few lines about his background v v v a new u1mn that is becoming quite popular and that was written by mary s edgar is now available we understand that tflie music was written by one of the toronto magls trates we haven t a copy of the hymn and are unable to quote from it however it goes something like this one verse will describe the stralghtness of the pine tree and the verse ends with a prayer to make me as straight as the pine another verse tells of the pureness of the water and its ending is a prayer to make me as pure as the water etc miss edgar is a sundridge ontario girl and oper ates a large camp on lake bernard there for girls she has had this camp for a number of years now and has made quite a success of it no doubt her association with nature the trees and water and the outdoor life has given her the background for the wording of this new popular hymn v v v graduaixy jve are realizing that we are at war first it was bacon that we were asked to do without ten followed the recent ruling re arding the sale of gasoline as we write these lines the announce mont is made that the manufacture of ice cream may be prohibited some how we dont like to think that ice cream may pass off the stage we like it of course but we can easily get along without it but we did always like to see the youngsters get their full share of icevream to us it al sign the pledge to let your car wear proudly this patriotic sticker go to your friendly neighbourhood service station or your local garagemem today a form of strawtoerrles was serv ed it was one of those real hot days in july and the strawberries had a coating of transparent glase on them as they were passed around we were talking to a group or university gradu ates at the time and they were won dering what this glase would be one even suggested dry ice we- told them that it was merely the effect of the cold strawberries corning in contact with the warm air thus forming this glaze and was their face red of course we rubbed it in it is seldom tjhat we get a chance like that with university graduates haywabd stacey wedding quietly on
