lieutenant in 1899- and the out break of the greats war found him com missioned as a major in the corps of guides and divisional intelligence officer on the general staff of the 2nd division toronto he served for five years in france belgium and italy on the general staff in 191415 he was a lieutenant- colonel in the first canadian division under lord byng in 191516 he was chief of intelligence for lord plumer commander of the second imperial army and in 191718 he held the same post under lord cavan at general headquarters of the british army in italy mentioned in dispatches general mitchell
