the georgetown herald wednesday evening october 8th 1941 the georgetown herald vtawa- of geor nerval qlan woiutim ihaehse stewart waw baunafad and terra cotta subscription rates canada and the united states s3 00 a year single ooptea 5o advertising rata will be quoted on appueamoa walter o biehn oakfhzid l mcoixjvray reginald broomhead phone no 8 member of the canadian weekly newspaper association and the ontarioquebec division of the ownjl n the editors corner fire prevention week by royal proclamation his excellency the governorgeneral has designated this week october 5th to october 1 1 thy as fire prevention week we have beeh exceedingly fortunate in our town this last year in having no serious fires yet we must not delude ourselves into believing that such things cannot take place it is up to everyone rather to be that much more careful in the future and keep up the good record that has- been set in the past year the rules for fire prevention are only common sense keeping matches where children cannot reach them putting out matches and cigarette butts before you throw them away refraining from smoking in garage barn attic or in bed etc v perhaps there are some new residents in town who do not know what to do in case of fire an alarm system was installed last year which is operated from the bell telephone co office on main street in case of fire a person must merely phone the operator who will press a button setting off the alarm which sum mons the georgetown fire brigade tell the operator where the fire is so the word can be relayed to the fire brigade we might add a word of tribute for those pub liespirited citizens who serve as officers and members of the georgetown fire brigade their work has not been strenuous during the year for which we are all thankful and it is to be hoped that in the year to come no major fires will tax their efforts should such bad fortune strike however we know that they will be found at their posts doing their duty to help save life and property early assessment assessor w g marshall is busy these days de livering assessment notices earlier in the year the council decided that from now on the assessment should be made between april 1st and september 30th in order that the tax rate could be struck at an earlier date and an earlier date provided for payment of the first installment of taxes to start the new system the assessment of 1941 has been adopted for 1942 and the notices now going out are the same as those of 1941 the law requires that notices be sent out for each assessment the canada year book pnce again the canada year book is off the press and ready for distribution this valuable book which may be obtained from the king s printer ot tawa for 1 50 a copy is the official statistical annual of the country and contains a thoroughly uptodate account of all phases of the canadian economy special features this year include eight articles illustrating the effect of the war on canadian affairs there is relevant data on unemployment insurance gasoline tax and succession duties income tax and foreign exchange in addition to the regular 1 50 edition a limit ed number of paperbound copies are available at 50c each these are set aside for students and school teach ers and ministers and may be obtained by applying jto the dominion statistician dominion bureau of 3tatistics ottawa garbage collection a pressing need in georgetown at the present time is an organized system of garbage collection there has always been difficulty in town m this regard and much trouble has been experienced from time to time with garbage dumping in improper places which is a menace to sanitation as well as the beauty of the sur rounding countryside we suggest that the town council should give their earnest consideration to elimination of the gar bage problem the logical starting point will be to get statistics from other towns of similar size which have such a system in force find out how much it would cost how disposal is made how often collections should pe made etc with this data available it should be an esy matter to find some solution to the rsresent prob lem loans lucky draws donations etc as the winter approaches we see no end to the number of approaching calls on our citizens fpr money this is as it should be there is no end to the money that is umuwiraodjwallltey to dig down a little deeper and do without a few luxuries theresriotikhe no kick if w stop to think where we would be if de mocracy should rail first and foremost at the present time is the war savings campaign plans for which are being laid georgetowns objective is to raise enough money through the purchase of war savings stamps and cer tificates m a fourweek period to purchase a universal carrier valued at 5000 this is only a start one universal carrier will never win a war and the more equipment our army is provided with the betterpre pared they will be to put an end to hitlers brutality another coming event on the horizon is the community auction sale further details of which ap pear in a news item in this edition to make this a success everyone must pitch in and help wherever they can the money from this will be given j two funds wthe wellestablished british war victims fund and the soldiers comforts fund still in ltamfancy which will be turned over to the committee which has been doing good work sending parcelsand cigarettes to our boys overseas and to the georgetown red cross society lucky draws are something that always seem popular and there arent many people who cant spare the odd quarter to take a chance on an article being raffled for war work with all the calls that will be made on us this fall we must accept them cheerfully remember we sorry i cant take a
