the georgetown herald wednesday evening october 22nd 1941 as we see br j a strang k t last fall the imtcb have well taken care of by the gtttgh win and there arent many to imke up at all there is quite nation about raking leaves and f them and yet it always seems ie to bum them they make i humus if left to decay and when 3 under or dug into the garden good fertiliser the odor of leaves makes one think of summer but wnether we have that season or not this fall is to argument anyway it has a nice fall and as we write these i we haven 4 bad any frost stntm gn to do any damage to che to- plants the thunder and hghtn- of last week reminds us that that to be a sign of an open there wouldnt be any kick that either vv v tpurchase of as many savings certificates as possible is as neces sary as ever perhaps evan more they mmkfe calm giflts wedding ohritanas gifts or just plain unlike other gifts they increase y value as time goes on instead of de ling in value savings certflcates t an advantage oyer even the pur je of bonds often the interest t we got lrom ooods from time to l is spent and when the bond ex- jt we merely have the amount of i original investment whereas with tcates we have the original in tent and all of its ear be- another advantage in favor of sates is that we can buy 10000 for 8000 when investing in l we usually have to pay the full i of these bonds at the tune of another advantage that cerufioatat hawe u that they may be purchased in so many different de nomination and we dont hare to wait until we get several hundred dollars as la the case so often la purchasing bonds jbuppose we make i special ef fort to buy all the war savings oer- ttneatea ncsmlble before the end of 1m1 v v v there abb plenty of ways by which we oan show ourioyalty these days and one of these would be to at times use pulleta eggs rather than the a large ones britain wonts all the eggs that we can send and it la the a large that is sent overaeas at this time of the year there are more of the smaller eggs that would be the case later on and with eggs high in price the smaller ones axe the better value the quality of pullets eggs is comparable to that of the large eggs the only difference being the size it might be of interest to mention that a large eggs must weigh individually at least h ounces to the dozen a medium weigh from 22 oss to 24 and the a pullets weigh from 18 oar up to 22 ok to the down of course there are other qualities besides weight that would be taken into account when eggs are being graded howver the size is of course the most noticeable quali ty we understand that properly fed hens produce eggs that weigh heavier according to size than do hens that are not so welt fed v v v the finals in thcjwnrlnclal wo mens softball series went to the full three games suncoe taking the first game sudbury the second and slmooe taking the third and de clining game just to give you an idea of the interest that was taken in this series the total attendance at the three games was over 10100 and of course that is as it should be girls gomes provide just as many thrills as do boys games and we have noticed that the hometown fans are even more loyal to the girls teams than they sometimes are to the boys teams one modem warfare de luxe these british tanks lined up smartly in 33 4 order created a favorable impression thing sure the hometown fan woukm t abend for any i on his home- team of girl softball players that is if if he had any red blood in his veins at all with boys games almost out of fashion on account of the war a girls softball league among tine sur rounding towns might prove to be quite popular sport has its place all nile time yes even in war time v v v the harvest of course is over for another year the mention of the word harvest brings to mind the harvesting of grain usually but it also applies to the harvesting ofother crops such as potatoes for instance and other vegetables as well we do like to see a bountiful harvest and it would be difficult to think of a prettier sight than a heavy crop of grain pro perly stooked up vq the out standing crops thafwe noticed this fall was the field of pumpkins at the ontario reformatory at guelph the smart yehow of the pumpkins stood out boldly in the bright sunlight and as they had several acres of them we could only imagine the number of pies that these pumpkins would pro vide filling for quite an institution this ontario reformatory last yea the crops on this 1100 acre farm ran something hide this 175 hay 75 acres of fall wheat choral society suspends activities for duration ly become another parcel and the postal authorities are as anxious as the senders that all the parcels arrive in time in order that everyone may be hap- j the cooperation of the public is asked which if given will produce the much desired result parcels should be well packed and wrapped anything liable to melt or run should be in sealed tin containers when making up a parcel remember there are a number of things that are forbidden and that anything perish able is not allowed remember also that the parcel to the other mothers son may be ruined because of one bad ly packed parcel in a mall bag be sure to have the parcel correctly addressed incorrect addressing has been the cause of many delayed and undelivered parcels a customs de claration must be be a good place to learn to hoe to the end of the row and one wouldnt be any the worse of learning that simple rule either in our mail bag georgetown ontario 14th october 1941 the editor the georgetown herald georgetown ontario dear sir may i through the medium of your valued paper bring to the notice of the citlxene of georgetown and vicini ty a few facts regarding the mailing of christmas parcels to those serving with the canadian forces overseas it may mem a little early to be writ ing of christmas but it must be realiz ed that particularly in regard to this district there are very many more of our boys overseas and for this reason the number of parcels to be sent will be that much greater a christmas parcel should arrive at or before that time otherwise it mere- whlch takes time and space has be found in the already overcrowded ships on the other side it has to reach the man who may be in some isolated outpost all this also applies to parcels to civilians should there be any doubt in the mind of the sender as to what may be sent packing limits of weight etc he or she should consult the post oboe before wrapping the parcel and thus avoid possible unnecessary trouble when mailing it is in the interests of the sender the addressee and the post office to mail in good time and avoid the pil ing up of parcels at the last moment and consequent delay mall your
