ottawa for conscription local chapter assists national chap ter peutlon may be signed at moglbbon block store last friday evening a special meet ing of the countess of strathmore chapter iode was held at the home of the regent mrs sam mac kenzle to deal with a communication received from the national headquar ters of that organization the matter under consideration was a plan to send a petition to prime minister king urging the immediate adoption of con scrlption the petition tt is hoped will be signed by large masses of the population with the various chapter of the i ode circulating the peti lion in their communities the localchapter at its meeting decided to lend full support to the olan and on saturday set up head quarters in the moglbbon block which wtu be open all this week in order backbone of lis population ore con vinced that certain measures in regard to the conduct of our war effort should be undertaken as speedily as possible these measures are as follows first in order that the finest or our canadian youth shall not be the only ones to sacrifice themselves and in order that the coming generations of canadians shall be largely the des cendants of the best type of cnlzen we ask foiconscrlption as the only fair way to fill the ranks of the fight ing forces second we demand that all the moral and material resources of our nation be commandeered for war ana that factories producing arms muni tlona or any material that is required by our fighting forces be regulated on exactly the same lines as the army navy and air force strikers and those responsible for labour dissensions be that thosvttens who asm with the ln t desertere to mw is their defection is exactly as serl ous as desertion from the armed forces since lack of war material at the front may cause the death of our own men as surely as fire from the guns of the enemy third we ask that any material required by our troops or by the people of britain of which there is or is likely to be a scarcity be rationed by cards which shall be distributed according to individual necessity with out fear or favour any other method is not only a waste of time but is ob viously unfair finally sir we believe that the peo pie of canada have reached the point where understanding of the seriousness of this war and of the issues involved will give them the motive power ne cessary for the extra work and sacri lice required of them they will feel that they are actually part of one forces that are fighting hltlerlsm and that their efforts make a real coatii button to the battle the fact that we do not yet see with our own eyes and leel with our own bodies the privations and the destruction and the suffering is still largely the reason for the in atlnct that says the war is not here it is across the ocean we are only asked to help even people who have not so far put this feeling into words will respond if put into a position ous street reminds me you cant al ways judye a woman by her face or jaunty white bungalow with its roof eek it was an aspiring young writer perched on its head at the angle of a school girls beret a black squirrel beckoned to me from a wind swept tree outside st georges anglican church i stopped to gaze after him admiringly because at home black squirrels are rare we are more accustomed to those flippant red squirrels whose epithets would not moke meek music on ecclesiastical property if i am any interpreter of squirrel language 1 i was much impressed by the un assuming dignity of this grey stone church a little removed from the rest of the street but never aloof no church can be aloof that has small lanterns just above its two doorways wherever they are those quaint medi eval lanterns seem to say there is welcome for you under this roof and peace and warmth i had time for only a brief iiti atlon of the interior of st georges but i promised myself a much longer visit at the next opportunity it was beautiful and stately even in the dusk of late afternoon i did not feel alone surrounded by so many man ortals to people weu beloved had walked along the same aisles and knelt at the some pews every lovely stained glass wuidqw revealed a polgn ant story from the unforgettably who hopefully placed a manuscript on desk asking for our criticism ana our opinion as to the quality of her work of course the young lady wanted more than that too some monetary compensation for what we think looks ike a promising beginning of a liter ary career we had little encourage ment to offer n that regard the bud get of a weekly newspaper being rather strictly limited not that the weekly paper would not like to pay for fea ture material of this type but our advertising rates are not se high enough to absorb any extras anyway we accepted her offer to allow us to print this whimsical gum pse of georgetown which shows our selves as others see us we enjoyed it and we hope you do there is always a thrill in dls covery wnether one is an intrepla dreamer like columbus or just a fairly young female with the instincts of a vagabond and substantial feet for which the seven league boots are none too large this wek i felt akin to all the explorers who have ever gazed silent upon a peak in darien at some part of the earth hitherto unknown to them when i discovered george town in the month of december in noble window above the altar the old the year nineteen forty one which challenge flashed be ye faithful un even before this had been assigned its i to death and i will give you a crown place among the momentous years in of life and like a bell tolling at history starlight this quiet reassuring it happened this way for once it 1 vwer to the glory of god and in was not necessary that i run gasp- i proud and loving memory of those men ing to hurl myself into a bus just of the parish who gave their lives in the war nineteen eighteen one does not come to church to gaze at windows or out of windows but if i had no better reason i would to st oeorges just for the prt vllege of refreshing my mind with the ancient challenge of christ and the re sponse that has always been given to it by the valiant and great hearted when i came outside again i squirrel had vanished and then gentle rain asmtled me it s almost bus time urged the vagabond ancestot who had kept close at my heels but you must have a glimpse of the lib rary it is one of those buildings that has all the characteristics one expects of a library but rarely finds i arrived just a few minutes too late to gain admittance but that was an other delight whch i promised my self when i first saw it x thought it was another small church but coming closer i noticed the sign public lib rary what writer or poet how ever exalted would not feel contented to know aa the works of his nund and hand rested on a shelf in this sanctuary the georgetown public library is like a venerable and friend ly scholar whose age is graced by the learning and dreams ne has acquired through the years even sun nine feet in seven league boots become weary and those feet as it left the deooti had two long hours to wall in a town where i knew no one here s your opportunity to do a little exploring- whispered the old vagabond ancestor contrary to my usual custom i accepted the sugges tlon of a man because after all when one is an ancestor one has had time to acquire a little wisdom my tour of inspection began auspl clouily as i concluded with a little warm feeling around my heart the people in this town are friendly it is pleasant to be smiled upon when one is alone in a strange town i smiled in return because the smiles seemed so kindly and sincere if a little curious i didnt care particu larly that the feather in my hat might have provoked this gentle mirth my shoes pranced along a little faster through inquiring small streets with unexpected turns and twists as if those streets had never quite decided which path they wished to pursue here one is never bored by the sameness of methodi streets with rows of prim stupid houses bven the jttle paths of qeorgetown ore ori ginal and provocative jy love the houses whenevh3nna of george town i shall temembar the shut
