morning and bad to rush to bten impressed too ii you had had tolschaol without my ahoea or shirt alt on a radiator instead of a chair i when i presented myself at the ofbre ao begins the end of my story ur lsmbrrt looked rather startled one winter day at school lust j and enquired what do you mean by after the four oclock baq bad rung showing up here with only bah your ww all come uptoatng daintily down the stair uk hard of elephant with the sera year itch and began sorting out our overshoes which were scattered about the hall i grabbed up my geloshea and sat down hastily to put them on i had just snspped tha sixteenth buckle shut when kruh oolson who waa a burly sort of fel low came up to m and said i beg your pardon old chap but rosy i draw your attention to the tact that you haie those golosh on the wrong faetr 80 i looked down at my feat ex amined them carefully end then af ter making sure my legs were not crossed i replied ibag to differ with you keith they are on the right feet that may be so old timer re plied keith but they happen to be my g- bul after going to all the trouh of doing up sixteen buckles on that overshoe 1 hardly felt like remoring them so i just brushed duckling them up and went home the next day wia saturday and one of my friend called around at my bouse to warn ma that keith waa pretty mad about the goloshes asalr and thu be bad said he wunt going to be satis- fled until he had wh cay teeth for me naturally when i beard this x got very angry myself in fact i waa bopping mad and i really saw red i waa even hopping higher than hitler when he sees a red smash say teeth for me will her i said well ill just call his blus and see if be really will with that i grabbed my bat and my coat and hie golosh and i rush ed right out and mailed him my teeth postpaid too as for the work itself at high school i was singled out right from the first aa the most promising student of all yea i waa always promising to do some namework but one subject for which i never had to do any home work waa spelling because it just came to me naturally no matter bow long or difficult a word waa i never paused one to ponder on how it was spelled but just went light ahead ard wrote it down m fact i still use that system today you no doubt have noticed our literature course was rather unique we began the year with oreat expectations continued with pilgrim progress and finally ended up with taw labour lost i waa rather fond of literature however and hardly a week ended but what i car- tied either charles dickens 01 henry longfellow home of course there were the odd night when they had to carry me borne instead na turally our school library waa well stocked with soma of the most famous fa por instance there waa an ivanboe to there a tale of tsro cities and also a vicar of wake field oh yes i almost forgot there was also a paradise lost in there but then that wj our own fault be- causp mr lambert alwaya warned us not to bring those things to school the subject of latin was greatly loved by all the students except me you see its just like the cannibal with the brooklyn aooent says one mans meat is another mans person recall quite clearly the day mr lam was giving the das practice in jntag latin nouns at last my turn came and he asked me to de cline the noun fulua bo i said hmm fluus eh then he said yee fului so i said hmm decline it ehl then he said yes decline it bo i said well if you insist i de cline the trouble of the heroin of a aoap chip radio drama were aa nothing when compared to the trouble wis luke used to have in trying to teach us french we alwaya used to claim that thar warnt no justice the way our french paper were marked and for that matter i still havent changed my opinion when ills luke counted up our marks we had to have about ten thousand thing right before she even started to count but the teacher who could really take joy out of my life when she came to confront us with the oaya quota of geometry and algebra was miss in dian i remember one day in parti cular that she came in to glvo us bask our examination papers she was wearing that traditional mnllo on the other side of her faoe which ahe used for such sombre oocasons as she said good people you have tears prepare to shed them now she then poised out ttw paper when i received mine and sow the big gooseegg on it i passed out too but i soon recovered enough to say pardon mo kiss inman but thoro surely must be some mlstakn nere all she said was uutta right bro- flrrthss on well you see i slept rather late this morning i replied and i didnt have enough ume to fully dress fortunately i s wnh my cocks on or i would be tn my bare feet now dont tu m you sleep with your pants on toot he rrrlslmert ob no i said tut after all even if i am late i insist on being up with the fsahlons so i slopped long enough to put them an well that explains that- he said for a nwrneni i though t your clothe had been taken to th cleaner no i aniwrred i was the one taken to th deanera at any rat he gar me a few hun dred una to write out for being lat jut 08 hand i would tike to bet that if all th line written by some of us at that school ware bud end to rod it would mak a bigger line than the on ooebbsla shoot but despite the fact that ifr lambert was quit lat eral with his lines that way we all thought a great deal eg him of course i cant say bcre what we thought some of the time no fool ing though w really did like ur lambrrt and whenever be would stop his oar to free any of us boys a nor to school we could hardly wait to get in with him if it was reining 111 never forget the debate that took place tn second form one day on the reapectlve merits of the ptsno and the itwpiw iteleo williams sjpported the ptsno verbally that it while bob wnwrnemy defended hu tatouru in strument thr sax during the de bate helen referred to the saxa- phone as a mechanical ntonatrosuy and bob sriorasrl over four people rushing for a dictionary then too there waa that day some one altered the name on the third form register wtih the reautt that robert early became roberta law rence beaumont became flawrrnce and norma thompson became nor man when aflss luke asked who wss reaponsble for this wicked deed jim kelly replied olve me a bead start and ill answer that question oh ye end then there was that morning ui helrtmann was showing us the lantern slides on the subject or snclenl history wa had just cov ered the first nine hundred years on the subject when suddenly the door opened wrt oordon ucdonald crept in ur hsldmann looked up and said solemnly ucdonald do you realise that you are nine hundred year later oee rm sorry said oord but i guess it must have been almost half past thermopylae before i woke up thla rooming ill never forget ho we used to march in the cadet corps napoleon once said that an army marches 4b- domenaly apologlee to all dl lea but ur ueldmann always told us that we marched abo now some of the boys dldnt care tor this cadet drill so one day ur lambert said all those not wishing to drill could take a study period in bealea dsas aa i have m before silas baalea waa quite a hit with the boys say but ru bet mr keldmann felt rather silly out there drilling all by himself oh but we all just loved to play tooosall with him you see we could accidentally look him in the shins to get even for all the history borne work he gave us its strange though that we could never convince him that we kicked rum accidentally if the football hap pened to be at the other end of the field he used to get a utile peeved and give us a good lecture which whan all boiled down to it slmnleat form would probably mean today tell that to oeneral baacarthur but the thing are all liked most shout sir hempi was the fact that ha atway had a joke for us to brighten up our miserable uvea in fact whenever x think of him i am reminded of those line of verse familiar to every achool boy which run something like this full well they laughed with counter feited gl at all his joke for many a joke had he at any rate it certainly kept us busy to keep up with all the various subject at school once someone asked one of our teachers just why we learned all the things we did since most of them would not be of any use to us after we left school the teach er replied that the educational system had been arranged mainly to train our brains x often used to wonder however if somewhere along the line someone had mistaken that word train for tttrain bay how our teacher used to pile- on the home work in fact most of the students used to complain bitterly that they hod so much homework they needed fiveton truck to carry their books home of course you understand such a statement is nothing but gross ex- aggtratlon and i certainly would not want anyone to believe that a five- ton truck waa necessary to carry our books home as for myself i always found a wheelbarrow quite large enough yea we certainly had to work pretty hard at achool in order to accomplish snythmg everyone studied dsy ana night until rinally the day came when they left achool to go on to success in the greater works of life in fsct many former georgetown high school students have even gone ao far aa to gain admittance to the local branch of the smith it storuan institute but when i left achool i went into business with a former achoolmate of mine named bui armstrong no bui had been just ss fine a student as ever forgot to do his french home work and together we formed a very successful partnership of course now we dldnt expect anything more out of life than two or three million dollars and a modest utile fiftytwo roomed bungalow hidden away in for est hill village but we kept right on anyway yea we made a very auc- cessful team and swept aside all ob stacle tn our path our fame spread far and wide crowd lined the streets to watch us aa we passed and wo men and girts would rush out to hklnkle sweetscented rose petal in our path despite all thla apparent dory our formula tor success waa really quite simple bui started at one end of the street i started at the other end and we swept until we met in the middle unhappily however bui and x coon broke up and he went on to nobler achievement i could never get another person to take bula place which just proves the old adage quaff and your friends quaff with you sweep and you sweep alone now x never had much money when i went to school and it was always quite a problem for me to scrape up the fifteen cent for my annual student council fee all the same whenever question arose where i had to choose between money or a friend im sure you know right asray which x chose thats right i ebon the money because i alwaya figured h i got the money x could araavyt get lota of mends as a rule a commencement only runs one night but we were in audi great demand that year that ere were kept running for gut nights straight we hid out m the daylight but at last the theatre manager caught up with us and maae us return the people money alter that commencement i decided to go in for racing as a sport to x entered the annual road race to acton and back for the school championship all the achool best runners such as john bowman ted btlgger jim bud- dell and jack aulnghem were oom- pcung against me i cemembrr how we all lined up and were watting for the gun to start the race when sudden ly i thought of that old saying be who hesitates is isst so i started be fore the gun i waa off like a shot anyway xo no one ever knew the diflerrnc ill tell you i was really traveulng that day just to shoa you how fat i went 1 waved to a farmer as i poued suvrrcrrek and he didnt get a chance to wave until i passed him again on the way back dven allowing for the fact that the fanner may have been a utue slow you wul hate to sdnilt that that was pretty fast the other boys aere running so far behind that i am positive i would have won the race it my bicycle tire hadnt gone flat but speaking of sports reminds me of the hockey we used to play on our rink behind the school i wu on outstanding hockey player by that i mean i was out standing on the sideline most of the time dairy beaumont used to centre s line with duug ssrgent and bud carter a hu wings dally was quite a hit with the guu and they used to stand around and watnh him pisy with that catchmellxflelestiswoon look in their eye yes delly used to bo up front making passe for hi wings while i wss at the back making passes for the girls of course txiey always made pane right back at me bu i was rather nimble in those days and always managed to duck in time au the boys at school had been sorted out into six hockey teams then the management organised a very original playoff system the six teams engaged in a series of game to decide which one was the best then the team which won the aerie had to play bob ooldham tor the championship when tzus arrange ment was snnounced a great cry of protest arose from all the student for we maintained that it was de cidedly unfair to match six men agmuut ooldham alone finally after a very heated debate mr lambert was farced to give in and he allow ed the team to use four extra men while x am still on the tuple of port x may as well teb you of the ume i fought in the interoohool boxing matches to uphold the honour of qms you tee a ruslghbttrlng school bad issued us a challenge for the cnamptcnahlp and our achool willingly accepted at that time i was only thirtyone years old and had just ruoely settled down in first form it was therefore with great dlaoomfort that i learned the others had chosen me to fight in this match for no other reason than that i was the oldest one there when the boy informed me of their choice i said excitedly walt now friends walt lots not be too hasty about this after all if age is the only considera tion why not choose luss penaonr she is a uttle older than i am buldcs i continued im in no shape to fight for ive just written a chem istry examination and im all worn out from jumping to conclusions despite my protests i was given the unenvlsble task of defending the proud and glorious reputation of georgetown high to be quite truth ful however i really waa in no shspe to fight in fact i wa so round- shouldered i had to wear my braces on my ears after the fight i also wore braces on my teeth johnny bowmen and don early acted a my seconds after each round don rush ed out snd picked up my teeth thau johnny rushed out and picked me up during the fight however i was at a considerable disadvantage for in the first round my opponent bad quite aocldmtauv on my part at least struck me on the nose with the re sult thst for the rest of the bout my nose was so swollen that my left eye dldnt know what my right eye waa seeing ill give my adversary credit though for he really had a head on his shoulders before long i decided if i dldnt do omethlng des perate i wouldnt have one on mine in the ninth round he shot over a low left to my stomach but x drop ped my guard to cover up then he shot over a low right and again i dropped my guard then he threw a high right to my head and i just dropped when that happened some smart guy in the crowd holler out what are you doing down there budr waiting for your next lesson in boxing from the correspondertne school at any rate i managed to finish the round and then went to my cor ner rallying my last forty ouncers of strength i staggered back again i must say that tenth and final round wa a dandy he kept chain ing right at me but i fought back furiously at last he knocked me dawn but i bounced right back up l then he i me down again but once more x bounced right back up then i reahxed that thla was a very foolish thing to do and x decided to use a little eommon- sense bo the next time he knocked me down i grabbed the bottom rope so x wouldnt bounce up again just to be polite to visitors the referee awarded my opponent the fight after i left the ring my school mates all rushed up to console me they said it wu no discredit what ever to lose to such an opponent fat he was the best twelveyearold fight er they had ever seen bo you see he had youth on hi tide but all the some i would like to bet that it only x had been twenty year young- continued on page 8 btaxts fob autf cbom aaaa ncagta
