the georgetown herald wednesday april 19th 1944 the dots overseas are getting a break right now yoii wlu notice that those blue airmulls now earns lor three pence instead of six pence as they used to have to put on to air mall is giving real service now also a letter posted in england on monday now often gets here on the following saturday good going would say we noticed hi the paper the other day an account of a letter teaching beaverton from overseas on tbe same day uiflt it had been mailed jn england of course that was an exception and while service lllp that would be appreciated yet we will be content ii we can get those letters afely in the course of a week we do hope that ttie mails going the other way are getting tlirough as rapidly as do the malls coming westward after au it is the boys and girls over there tfaat look for the ordinary news from b recent reduction in hydro rates for rural communities mounted to about 10 per cent on first bill at the reduced rate we bad thought that the reduction would be more than that however the num ber of hours that come under the first rate has been increased and it was that change that made the differ eooe anyway even a ten per cent reduction especially in war time is ap preciated the larger user of hydro power would of course benefit more fean would the smaller user as the induced rate would affect his used boors that come under the second and ttilrd rate whereas the smaller user finds that most of his power used comes under the first rate chsrfed haven t lost any xoore than half of the extras that came with the chicks as you know they usually put in four extra chicks for every hundred that you pay for when you get baby chicks this year we got our chicks earlier than we did last year and we find that the earlier season chicks seem to hardier than the ones that are hatched later an in the season of course there is plenty of time yet to run into trouble with them but they nave gotten away to a good start and that looks like half the battle baby chicks are interesting things to look after and we would have to be very hard boiled if we dldnt get a kick out of watching them as they grow older we give them different dishes or con tauiers for their feed and water and it is fun to watch them- when a dlf ferent container is set down in their pen they look it over and venture a little near en- and then finally one brave chick has the nerve to taste the contents they find it satisfactory and h isnt long until the whole flock are trying out the water or teed right at the moment it looks as though it will be sometime yet before we will be able to treat lhe baby chicks to fresh grass however the scene can chinge rj quickly when the right weather arrives that snow that fell lajt tuesday was just what wt needed it was interesting to notice that after it had melted oil the perennial bed so many jf the url plants were showing tflxnc ground then too when that snow milted most of it soaked right into the ground giving moisture for the growing plants and also helping takt out the balance of the frost that was in the ground of course we never do think that spring comes as early as we would like it to come but it always does come sooner or later and we haven t much to kick about yrk tapped our maples too t early aitogetwf j anyway the sap hunt run very much so fly in a letter reosird recently from northern ofiulfu where they really 00 ill for mafctng maple syrup they write that those that tapped earlier iwve had to tap the trees the second fane the writer mentioned that they had just tapped their trees and had taken off their first syrup and men tttmed that at the time of writing the ap hadnt been running freely at all while we may still get some sap runn lag weather yet it is getting late enough and we wouldnt be surprised if is another offyear for maple syrup as vaa lest year with the sugar bortage still in evidence the scarcity of maple syrup and maple sugar is mis spring has been the most satisfactory spring in our expert qoe for baby chicks they dldn t mem to be any trouble at all and to dale we have lost very few in fact we english seaman holidaying hb ord
