members in toronto church parade i the georgetown branch of the ca tinpn legion received high honours when they attended the convention church parade in toronto by being placed in second position in the pa rade three delegates were appointed to attend the three day convention in toronto and on the invitation of com rade president stalford all those wish tag to attend the church parade were invited to attend the local legion hall at 12 noon sunday a special invitation was extended to the georgetown girls pipe band to attend and lead the local members at the church parade and close to fifty local comrades accompanied by sev oral members of the ladles auxiliary boarded two chartered buses and left georgetown at 1 pjn when the party reached toronto they assembled at the hotel carls rite until the tail in of the parade on the invitation of the manager of the carls rite the girls pipe band consented to play several selections in the rotunda of the hotel which was greatly enjoyed by the guests as shown by a round of applause after each selection played at 230 pjn the georgetown group headed by the girls pipe band march ed to their designed place at the comer of university and front streets to join the parade for the wonderful response shown by the georgetown branch in attend tag the parade the marshal placed the local branch in second position ta the parade which was indeed an honour for the local branch the parade moved off headed by the band of no 2 district followed by the colours of each branch numbering close to 100 flags then followed the georgetown girls pipe band and le glon followed by delegates accompanied by their bands from other towns and cities prom the amount of applause from the spectators who lined the streets the girls pipe band made a tremen dous hit in the city of toronto it is regrettable that as the parade moved on it started to rain which somewhat marred its beauty but all branches carried on and after follow tag the designed shaded spots and helped to take the frost out of the ground so that we could dig our spring parsnips without thinking the china men were still hanging on to the end of the roots with so much cloudy weather the land is drying up very slowly and we have not yet heard of any farmers in this season being able to get on lt for spring work the best encouragement we can hold out to impatient ones is legion stayed over in tj w ip j tend a one night set xnnn wn uo a voj pa rebekah unknown friend night on tuesday evening april 18th about fifty members of verdun rebe kah lodge assembled at the lodge rooms for the annual unknown friend night at 7 pjn all sat down to a de ltctouo supper the tables were beauti fully decorated in the lodge colors of pink and green with paper candle holders representing a rose and each holding a pink or red candle at inter vals on the tables were pots of bayel tear plants and at each place a place card with a members name and the ta hie was laden with mysterious and beautifully tied up parcels each con talning the secret of the unknown friends name after all had eaten of the good things on the tables sis vivian ar nold noble grand acted as toast mistress and asked foe a toast to the king which was responded to by singing the national anthem sis florence bailey proposed the toast to the lodge which was responded to by 81s myrtle dron sis olive ken nedy proposed the toast to my un known friend this was responded to by sis olive logan then came the long awaited moment of opening the parcels and finding the unknown friends name within and there were many exclamations o new names yr 1944 ia5 and z bjua a again ltri a three act comedy a pair of country kids was presented by the ballinafad united church young people in gregory theatre last mon day night when forty dollars was cleared for the funds of the organlza tlon the play waa under the direction of mls3 betty mccafkely miss lydla snow introduced the play to the au dlence the play was exceedingly well done and the following ballinafad young people took part kenneth rlddler u shortul floyd shortill lena ferryman harry shortul betty rid dler annie snow richard shortul rhoda french and boywmrne the plot of the play centered around a county hotel the outof town men guests noticed oil in the water they were brought to drink and ascertain ing that the water had been drawn from the hotel well they pledged the two hotel servants the pair of coun try kids to secrecy ana made a deal with the owner of the hotel two old maids to buy it from them for 10 000 the play goes merrily along with many amusing situations developing but the climax comes at the end when the rd norval junior institute the regular monthly meeting of the norval junior institute and junior farmers was held on tuesday evening april 18 at the home of marlon bel and douglas ourrle the theme of the junior institute meeting waa beautifying the home and the roll call was answered by a clean ing hint miss jean lindsay gave a very useful and interesting paper en titled home made renovation she showed many useful ways of remodel ling rooms to give them brighter and newer appearances without involving much expense at the meeting of the junior farm era president jim carney was in charge mr adison woodley spoke on the showmanship and care of dairy cattle at the joint meeting the guest speaker was mr j e whltelock of milton agricultural representative for halton county he delivered a very interesting address on tost war re construction miss viola brigden sang very pleas ingly accompanied on the piano by mr john bird ward brownridge moved a vote of thanks to the speaker and to mr and mrs currie for open ing their home for the evening following the program light re pte gordon james wounded in italy t mrs e james received a cable from ottawa last night which brought the newb that her son pte gordon w james had been wounded in action in italy on april 18 the cable said fur ther word would follow as to the ex tent and nature of his wounds pte james is now with the irish re glment of canada and has been serv ing in italy snlce october gord en listed with the lome underwent an operation in toronto general hospital recently la home and able to be out and around some again his many friends wish him a complete recovery soon the community were shocked to hear that mr joseph hoare suffered a alight stroke recently mr hoare is a highly respected resident of union district and the entire community wish him a speedy and complete recovery the federated clubs of terra ootta farm women and men met for its april meeting at the home of mr and mrs campbell sinclair on monday evening april 3rd there was a splendid at tendance and the meeting was much enjoyed by all present the union w m s held an easter thankoirring meeting at the home of mrs t f macdonald on good fri day afternoon april 7th about thirty five ladles attended thla meeting mrs rev walter mcalplne of brampton was in charge of the devotional mr and mrs w bradley honoured by st georges choir af mcnaixy dinner party mr and mrs f d mcnally enter tamed st georges choir to a dinner party at their home on friday evening april 21st thirty guests sat down to a delicious meal served by the host and hostess and their daughter mrs paul barber following the dinner an entertain ing evening of games was enjoyed under the direction of miss yvonne adams each guest was asked to bring five fun provoking prizes in a bag and winners of games and contests were allowed to excange prizes each time with another guest the highlight of the evening was the presentation of a silver entree dish to mr and mrs w f bradley cholr master and organist of st george s for many years it being their silver wed ding anniversary mr jack thomp son and mrs edward arnold sang a specially composed song for the occa slon and archdeacon w g o thomp son read an essay written by him self in honour of the bradleys as the presentation was made the wed ding march was heard a bride and groom entered thomas isason jr and bill mcnally respectively clad in wondrous raiment and marched up to the waiting minister reuben eeaon both mr and mrs bradley were greatly surprised by the gift and both the happy evening was brought to a close after a sing song and the singing of auld lang syne mr and mrs roy edwards of to ronto former wellknown residents of georgetown were guests at the dinner expressed- their thanks teethe mcf nally s and the choir for their kindness lions club hold ladies night it was a very happy gathering at the mcglbbon house on monday evening when the members of georgetown lions club entertained their ladles and guests to dinner lion chief ralph ross presided and after toasts the king and the armed called upon lion harold m3c- clure who acted as masterof ceremo nies uon rev chas cochrane proposed toast to the ladies prior to a lively sing song with miss j leavltt at the piano bill mac- donald s rhythm rubes provided some snappy old time numbers jimmy va lentine also gave a rendition of blue bonnet over che border and the campbell s are coming on the bag pipes h the evenings enter tainment was miss gertrude cain in several dancing routines especially fine was the skipping tap and the military tap miss cain is an accom plished dancer and she was accompa nied on the piano by mrs mitchae may outing the evening uon james ballantine spoke briefly and mrs w v grant expressed the appreciation of the ladies to the members of the lions club rosebud mission band ashgrove the cltusenship meeting of the yjb was held sunday evening ajril 23rd at the home of mr and mrs c b dick with douglas currie in charge the meeting opened with quiet music by miss i kean during the worship ser vice the scripture was read by viola brigden mrs frances thompson gave the topic outlining uie ideals and hopes of youth today betty ruddell and ismey kean favoured with a vocal duet the members of ashgrove yps were pleased to accept the invitation to visit the united church yp5 o georgetown early in may miss frances wriggleswori a ronto and miss mabel wrigglesworv of milton visited with mr and mrs horace barnes during the week end pte chester deforrest and mrs defores were also visitors with mr and mrs barnes pte deforrest is re turning to monueth where he is sta tioned on tuesday the dainty lunoh was served at the close of the meeting t p 8 norral and union held the closing meeting for the year ta the form of a banquet m unlon presbyterian church basement on monday evening april 10th rev forbes thompson of acton was the js russell and miss georgina bocles sang a vry lovely duet misses nora lyons and jean dcdes delighted the audience with piano duets mr carson watson play s l and mouth ow tbe boys of norval put ou a humourous skit itm womanleas wedding- about eighty young people attended banquet rev j l self master weather rev a young m of milton was the guest speaker roland i during the devotional period ward brownridge read the scripture and betty ruddell led in prayer mrs h c wrigglesworth of georgetown sang a beautiful easter solo the easter thankoffering meeting of the bright star mission band was held in the sunday school room on good friday afternoon with elme bird vice president presiding there was a fine attendance of children and mothers mrs hector bird led the de votional period which gve the beau tiful easter story jean bird read the scripture lesson and ranald drake gave a spring poem the rob call was answered by somethtog to remind us of easter mrs john bellboddy gave the arst ihapter of the stody book master oraf tsman in most interest ing manner gladys ruddell favoured with a piano solo and after the thank- offering was taken barbara cunning bam gave the dedicatory prayer mrs it collier and daughter audrey of hamilton have been visiting at the the rosebud mission band of the united church held their easter thank offering meeting on april 17th with the president shirley ann thompson presiding the worship pe riod opened with the call to worahh together in gods house we meet followed by hymn 104 christ to lord has risen after which three members conducted a most impressivo devotional service the message of easter was vividly portrayed in story form by anne crabtree and in song by shirley doble jacqueline beaumont lead in prayer ross mcgilvray and joyce denim took up the offering which waa dedi cated by sandra shaw during the business period the minu tes of the previous meeting were read by jean tyler and the treasurefs re port given by anne crabtree a spring like atmosphere pervaded the sunday school room when a delightful chorus daffodil bright daffodil was sun by the entire band this was followed by an exercise spring and her mes sengers with shirley thompson dress shaw muriel spence dorothy lane betty clark joan doble eileen allan arid jacqueline beaumont represent ing spring flowers the president welcomed members of the wjjl8 and visitors and then called upon miss l mbcunaer to speak to the children miss mcoumbera story thr lump of clay was much enjoyed by all present the band contributed another lovely acred chorus the chlldrene work song after which a playette was pr- sented by some of the younger mem bers the waking of the snowdropst with jim buck as the sun sue crab tree anne hyde and joyce denison as the sleepy snowdrops and a solo by miriam grace others contributing to the program were jane milne a vocal solo betty clark a piano solo and sue crabtree a recitation jean tyler and anne crabtree on behalf of the members or the milton band expressed their appreciation to miss mccumber former easter story after singing hymn 587 bird w singing woods are ringing allen closed the meeting with i cecil wilson this toast home of mr and mrs j is past week mr bob wilson of toronto visited with relatives in the community durinw the easter vacation congratulations and best wishes to mr and mrs leslie glffen on their recent marriage we extend a hearty welcome to mrs glffen as she to make her home in this communtty we are very sorry to report the loss of mr and mrs root cunningham 9th line of their fine barn which was dea- royed by fire of unknown origin jut tuesday through the help of neigh bours most of the hve stock werejgavea mr davey a toronto school frwr presented the
