halton farmers in a recent interview with agricul tural representative j e whltelook we learned that to date seventeen halton farmers have secured western farm hands needless to add this is far short of the number required as we understand that there are seventyfive applications for jhese men on fyle at the agricultural office at milton in addition toronto commandos have stepped into the breach officer leslie clark arrived home unexpectedly on monday night after having served twentytwo months overseas with the rcjlf air transport command his parents mr and mrs mark clark received word of his arrival back in canada on sunday when he notified them from montreal although lev has had some narrow escapes and interesting experiences on his operational flights to the middle east and par east he is very reticent about telling of them for security reasons among the distant n he has visited are cairo alexandria egypt and ceylon india he hasnt run into any georgetown boys for about a year les headquarters big celebration at stewarttown on- july 1st 1887 we are indebted to two readers this week for an interesting account of the celebration held at stewarttown on july lot 1887 to celebrate the 50th year of the reign of queen victoria ons communication is signed by an old subscriber and gives hi detail what actually took place on the occasion another whoooe not wish to be men- tinned brought in a copy of the pro gram used on this occasion and note that it was printed by the georgetown herald it is an elaborate program and signed by the following committee messrs lindsay lawson at stewarttown july 1st 1887 a splendid committee was appointed in the month of may of 1887 to cele brate the 50th year of the reign or queen victoria june 21 was the day selected and charlie murrays bush was the place appointed quite close to ste warttown station for the great day a large platform was built in the bush to accommodate 100 couples for the dance for the afternoon and evening the opening ceremonies were called for 1030 in the morning and at that time an estimated crowd of 1000 people had arrived in wagons buggies and on foot and col murray opened the program and called on col thos ohisholm for opening address but at this time the weather man interrupted with the heaviest rain ever known in the county from 11 o clock until 3 the trees sbel tared the people for a very short hnf then the retreat began to get home in those open wagons and buggies the young men in their best suits were piti ful but worse were the ladies in their long white dresses with the pink or blue was noticed it had gained too much headway to save much more than the furniture in the lower part of the house a call was sent in to the georgetown fire brip gade but as the truck could not be ta ken out of town a number of the men volunteered assistance with the am of an electric pump until the power was cut off and by hauling water in milk cans firemen and neighbours fought the are until after midnight credit is given the local brigade for saving the back kitchen and driving house but the main part of the old home is a total loss so intense was the heat that some of the brick walla crumbled and fell this fine old structure had stood the test of ume for well over one hundred years and was known as the lronsr homestead the house was exception airy well built with even the partitions being of brick construction it is said that the bricks for the house www- made on the farm and that people came for miles around to see this home when it was completed since the fire mrs hughes who is well
