homes in a new coun try after the war writing to the tyers family mrs thomas parry the most recent english girl to marry one of our local soldiers is excited about the prospects of meeting her husbands friends over here and we can assure her that georgetown folk are just as anxious to welcome her to a new home at the same time when the hour of parting comes we know there will be sad thoughts as homeland and dear ones are left behind perhaps forever with this in mind there will be consolation in the fact that there is no more ideal location for the dozen or more girls who will come to georgetown with their soldierhusbands than right here in georgetown transplanted plants root best in their own soil and there is a touch of england in landscape especially so in glen williams with its neat cottages hedgerows and picket fences with winding roads streams and hills there is fflore than a touch of england in georgetowns popula tion which is of predominantly british extraction and where every other home has parents brothers and sis ters uncles aunts and cousins over there with whom they are in touch mrs parry whose home is in bour nemouth hampshire will undoubtedly find others in town from the same locality and from these we know she will get a warm welcome there will be no lack of things to talk about and this will be of inestimable help in welcoming the shyness and nostalgia which is bound to be in the heart of a new arrival we hope that readers and most especially those who themselves have had to adjust themselves to life in a new country will go all out to give the newcomer a warm welcome a cherry word a friendly smile a sin cere glad to nteet you will be the proper welcome for the mesdames parry tennant graham brown lo- russo and reeve to you ladies the welcome mat is already out in the language of your new homeland well be seein ya and soon we hope war victims and soldiers comforts thiff jptrict has alwa played its p in worthy efforts and readers need no reminder of the splendid support given to victory loan drives campaigns for red cross russian and chinese relief salvage drives and farm commando help it seems that citizens are always willjng to dig down deep when approached by canvassers and campaign after campaign has gone over the top with a bang but there is an even more marked indication of this brotherly spirit in the two funds sponsored by this newspaper nothing has given the publisher more plea sure than to see the war victims fund and the soldiers comforts fund soar past the four figure mark there haa been no solicitation and no compulsion every penny has been a freewill offering from those who have thoughts for people less fortunate than ourselves and for men who are playing their part that we may en joy canadian freedom in the months ahead there is no limit to what can be accomplished by your support of these funds german robot bombs have added new hardship to a britain which bears the scars made by manpropelled birds of destruction every day britishers are losing their homes and possessions and looking to a helping hand from this side of the water the evening tele gram fund with which the herald is affiliated sends the complete total overseas and there are absolutely no deductions made for expenses from monies so collected the soldiers comforts fund works on similar lines and goes intact to the good ladies of the committee who end cigarettes and packages to all district men and women overseas you can imagine what these gifts mean tothose far from home and we cant think of any better use for an extra quarter or dollar than as a free will expression of gratitude to the ones who are giving 4ll bonusing babies the proposed payment of allowances for child ren announced by prime minister which were processed in a pres sure cooker on a small electric element turned to medium the peas were from the same fresh bach answer the cooker should have been placed on the large electric ele ment instead of the small one because the one side might not have been re ceiving the same amount of heat the jars should not be placed in a draft to cool the two jars may have cooled too quickly mrs s t asks is it possible to stack tin cans when processing answer yes but be sure there is sufficient space around the sides over and under them racks in the form of strips of shingles may be used under and over the cans but the space around the sides should be about two inches anne allan invites you to write to her co the herald send in your sug gestions on homemakmg problems and watch this column around the beginning of july cham pion position as before because tax deductions for children will be lowered and what he receives will be paid right back in increased income tax that family allowance will favour frenchcanadians and citizens of foreign birth who are more prolific than those of british origin that canada is like a fascist country encouraging the mass- production of children for future wars and finally that the liberal government is playing politics and looking for votes in a not-too- faroff election no question can be onesided and we do not completely disagree with any of the- arguments advanc ed by the daily press we do believe there are argu ments on the other side however which bear consider ation regardless of the reasons for the proposed baby bonus it is indicative of the inability of industry to make allowances for children a man is no more valuable to an employercif he is married or single has one child or four his salary is based on what he is worth to the firm and this worth has no relation to his family life similarly the- employer himself gets a cer tain return from his business and his profits also bear no relation to the number of children he can afford to raise this fact has been realized in our army al though a corporal or a sergeant or a lieutenant is worth no more as such when he becomes a father the govern ment increases the allowance to his wife in order that her standard of living will not suffer the passing of a family allowance bill would be merely the extension of this principal to include all citizens it is one step fur ther in the realization that the raising of children is a national as well as a personal obligation for many years it has btffen readily accepted that every taxpayer pays a school tax and childless taxpayers thus have a share in educating other peoples children the day may not be far off when childless taxpayers will also pay a small share in bringing up the nations children provided the measure is properly drafted we be lieve tie bonusing babies act would be a good thing for canada it has been truly said that a nations true wealth is its children and it is also a deplorable
