ly filled with bales of wool so it looks luce very little hockey in milton this year champion new provincial grants continued from page l current revenue on the erection of building or the providing of equipment and furniture these grants are also limited to 95 of the approved cost and the approved cost is limited to 300 per pupil in average attendance the above may to the lay reader appear to be rather complicated the average ratepayer will want to know what effect win this new grant scheme have on my tax bill what effect wfh it have on the schools of ontario in what way will my pocketbook and the schools of halton county benefit from this new grant scheme here are some practical results local school tax redactions one important result of the pro vince assuming fifty per cent of thi over all cost of education as compar ed with some twenty per cent in 1944 win be a marked reduction in ocal school taxes provided that boarda of trustees keep e within reasonable bounds and do not greatly exceed expenditures for uh if boards or trustees were to go on a spending ispree simply because the province win pay half the hffl tuen the whole primary object of til step would be defeated the first objective is to decrease tbe local taxes on rsal estate for education this can and should be done by the cooperation of all concerned the increased grants win more nearly enable every community even the poorest community financially to provide for every ontario child as silvers mid winter clearance of mens and ladies coats all our winter coats on hand have been greatly reducep in price in this our annual midwinter clearance sale silvers department store phone 375 where good clothes cost less georgetown tm uk pc1 bbck wfcw nlju f1mer is mka site lla stack iruow spucr stick fas educational op- i prt unity as possible the increased grants will lower the cost of high school education for county pupils this is because high school boards are required to deduct all legislative grants from thei- gross costs in determining the ne cost to be paid by coonty and townsiip coun ells on behalf of county pupils at tending high schools this wfll lower the high school costs levied through county rates on farm properties and should enable more rural pupils to attend high schools foe longer periods since the province wfll now pay 50 per cent of school costs u will not be necessary to continue tne special grants on equipment and accommoda tlon payable by the province and the county this will mean a saving to the county this may apply llso to transportation costs and fifth classes pauer programme of btodles as the grants become operative every school wiu be expected o pro vide a full programme of studies of both obligatory and optional subjects together with an ample supply of books and equipment for teachers and pupils soon it may be reasonable to expect every public school to be teaching music manual training home econo mics agriculture and the atrts and crafts every school will be expect ed to provide an ample supply of books for use by pupils and teachers since township school areas will now receive substantially increased grants in addition to ell other grants a ripld extension of township school areas may be expected ratepayers in sections not in township school areas win be well advised to ascertain juot how much greater the grants would be had their section been in a township school area since all school expenditures are rubject to approval before grants can be assured there should be the clos est understanding and cooperation between the school board and the in spector in each case it is reasonable to assume that it will be tbe dutv of the inspector to make certain tbat adequate educational faculties are be ing provided before recommending tbe payment of the grant boards are strongly urged to get in touch with the lnspecor before undertaking to- creased exp any rapid increase of school expen ditures in ims win defeat the main purpose of tbe grants and jrnl grra the province difficulties in meeting pants on the 60 basis in future years the first aoctmrphshment hi ims must be a major reduction tn local school rates and then a vary moderate use of tbe increased grants towards more and better equipment and improved school buildings school grounds local interest tn ednoatton mart not be allowed to decrease because tne province pays so great a sfaara of school costs the best guarantet of a world worthy of tfaoee who an pay ing for it with their uvea is th con tinued interest of tbe people of the locally hi an efficient aohool interest hi local schools most b maintained without local intonat la schools progres of the blghes type is impossible every ratepayer should study carefully tbe tables outlining the new grants every dttsen worthy of the name wul make a real effort tc understand what this great step forward in school finances means to him and his locality ekjuallty of edtaaatlonal for every boy
