editor harold davison memoer ot thp canadian weekly newspaper association and um ontarioquebec division of the cwna t 1hey are of service to canada the editors corner two new editors our congratulations go to miss vonne adams and mrs lilian ritchie editors of the new smith stone plant newspaper which made its debut last week end a bright newsy four page sheet i will serve as an outlet for the literary minded among the employees as well as keeping them informed of plant happenings and news of the industry in general the new comer is as yet unnamed but before the second issue next month a naming contes will be concluded and the pa per will have an official title it is our regret however that for the time be 5ng the smith stone column which has proven so popular with herald readers has been discontinued the editors of the new paper will be oo busy arranging de tails of publication to al ow for writing a weekly col umn however they have kindly consented to allow us to republish anything of general interest so we will continue to keep our readers in touch with smi h stone news in this manner later on we hope that we can arrange again for the regular weekly column in the herald industry decentralizing from alhston comes word that a toronto firm dorothea hats l d has taken a six month least on the agricultural building and expects to have up to u m ployees engaged in manufacture by the end of next month this is oni one of dozens of cit firms which axe experimenting with a mot- to sin lller localities the decentralization of indus r which economists have ta ked about for several years is more and more becoming an accomplished f ict and man who has foolishly built bigger and bigg r citus is coming to realize that after a ccr am point sit is i distinct disad vantage to indus rial production in the future wc expect to sec the rtb rth of small town mdustrv and to see the hrger cities dissoke into a number of smaller communities where the in habitan s can enjoy life as we enjoy it here in gtorge town better housing better hei th i or leisure t me and a higher standard of living are only a few of the obvious advantages that we enjoy over our cit cousins lets call quits there is no doubt that george own ins one of the finest municipal buildings in any ontario town ind it is a fact of which we believe every citizen is proud standing at the main corner of the town the handsome grey stone bank of mon real building has everything which a municipal building in a prosperous town should have location appearance durability and accommo elation there have been certain criticisms of the 1943 municipal officers who purchased the building from the bank when it closed its georgetown branch some of these criticisms are quite justified especially he fact that an expenditure of over eleven thousand dollars was not submitted to a vote of the ratepiers who should quite properly have a say in the expendi ure of such a large sum of their tax money in f heat of the 1945 elections there were some harsh things said against the former mayor s wis dom in purchasing the building i h r wt rr clnres that the building cou d have been purchased cheaper that the upkeep mudot too expensnt t building for a small town that the town was a double los r m view of the taxes formerly paid by the bink one e i i liclitc even hinted that he would be willing to tij th building for the origina purchase price or les n ord r to go rid of an expensive town asset it was a far cry from ill this when in answer to a letter from the ex mwor off ring to buv th build ing for its original purchase price i motion wis unani mously passed it the february counc 1 mi ting hit the municipal building was not for sale at the present time council has now placed itse f in the paradoxical position of agreeing and disagreeing at one and the same time with the purchase of the building if some of he pres ent council believe that the purchase of the building was a mistake we would like to see them make an effort to sell it for aa high a pre as could be obtained in the open market if and we do believe hat this is the case- they are really pleased to have the building we flunk its time to call it quits and fess up that some of the preelection talk was just a bit exaggera ed the middle of february brings with it each year trie annual observance of boy scout week this year tbe sister organization the girl guides is joining in and dbs 160000 young canadians are taking pert in the weeks activities boy scoutgirl guide week is seven days in the year when these youth organizations make a special effort to let the public know just what scout ing and guiding are contributing to the upbuilding of canada s youth as serving citizens of the community the boy scout and girl guide movements stand out in direct contrast to the nazi youth move ment the hitler youth is inoculated with a doctrine of racial superiority of hite of brutality and of greed the scout guide movement is the antithesis of naz ism it seeks to inculcate a directly opposite pfulbso phy it seeks through its world wide ramifications to breed respect f6r md fellowship with all races all col ours ill creeds 1 seeks tp foster a spirit of goodwill in contrast to hate it teaches respect for the physical and mental feelings of ah peoples it teaches the shar ing of life s good things with one s neighbour it has beer said that ihe founder of the scout and guide movements lord baden powell of gllwell died i broken hearted man in 1 94 1 because scouting and guiding had not brought peace to this troubled world if he did he never revealed it to his closest as sociates scouting and guiding aims at a world bro herhood it could hardly be expected that in little more than a generation it could accomplish what the christian church has striven for centuries to accom plish but like the church it is working to that end together with all o her agencies and forces of goodwill this purpose will eventually be achieved dur ing this boy scout girl guide week the public is ask ed to see scouting and guiding in action to learn more tul y its purposes and in the knowledge gained to give it the moral support hat the movement deserves the thousands of jourig men and women who are today giving voluntarv le idership to scout and guide groups are rendering i service to canada which if not publicly apphuded must give them a tremendous amount of satisfaction georgetown s boy scou s and girl guides have rown into stionv organisations they deserve all the ncouragement wt cin give them the
