oetfartoquebeo onletoo of ttie owju 3 the editors corner not rttting memorials we didnt agree with the orillia packet and times last week when in commenting on the fact that stayner is considering the erection of a skating rink as a war memorial editor hale stated that a skating rink does not embody the idea or atmosphere that should underlie a memorial which should have in it a spiritual quality entirely lacking in purely utilitarian projects such as rinks and community centres advan tage is taken of the memorial sentiment to raise funds but the memorial aspect soon fades into the background in such gay surroundings useful projects such as arenas and community centres are to us much more sensible things to spend twentyfive or thirty thousand dollars on than large monuments which more often than not are not even beautiful that useful memorials bring happiness to people which would not otherwise be possible does not impair the spiritual quality of such memorials at all in nearly every case the heroes of war are young men youths who rejoiced in their physical fitness and who we feel sure would not resent the fact that many young people found happy healthful recreation in an arena or community ceritre erected to their memory it will be important of course to so arrange memorials of this type that the heroic sacrifice of those who gave their lives that just such happiness might be enjoyed would never be forgotten and we do not think for a mom ent that the citizens of any town contemplating such a memorial would ever neglect this point the memory of their boys once so alive and eager for life now gone forever from their streets will ensure a fitting spiritual quality in whatever memorial is erected in their honour i issues will be too unstable mr mackenzie kings recent radio address ad mitted that mps as well as the general public have been in a dither not knowing whether a session of par liament or a general election would be called following the north grey byelection the delay caused by this indecision has as its result a short session opening mar 1 9th and expiring before april 1 7th when the five year term of the present parliament expires mi king further clarified the point of when an election would beheld by explaining it would not mm until frr the conclusion of the 1500000000 victory loan cam paign which is to open april 23 since the canadian government is to send delegates to the san francisco conference being held a few days after the loan to form an organization for ordering international rela tions in the post war world it is unlikely an election date will be set until that eightweek conference session is over the premier has asked that the parliamentary session beginning next week be a purely business one without lengthy party debates much can happen in the two or three months that are definitely between us and a general election the european situation changes with each day until complete victory is more nearly within our grasp most people are concentrating more on winning the war than on politics what is the sense in electing a government to power on ita wartime plat form if peace is just around the corner and its admini stration will be during four or five years under alto gether different conditions than those existing when they were elected how much wiser and less expensive it would be to wait until world conditions are more stabilized surely it is not being overoptimistic to hope that the government we elect to power in the next elec tion will be the one we wish to administer the affairs oi canada during the period of post war reconstruction lenten thoughts the christian church tells us that during the sea son of lent people should repent of sins and errors and resolve to lead a better life the idea has been very widely held that personal sacrifices in the matter of food pleasures etc help one to take a more spiritual view of life and to center ones thoughts on questions ut conduct and faith the modern world does not spend any great amount of time reflecting on its sins yet plenty of people are doing wrong things which they should re gret many people are more or less dishonest and fail toire honest service for what they receive many who are not doing any seriously objectionable acts are yet living selfishly and should be more generous it would not hurt these people to give some thatfght to their manner of life and ask themselves if they could not cooperate a little better with their fel- lowipen the church tells people to show generosity and sympathy and for people to act in nidi a way as they would like to have others act toward them if they followed that golden rule the great majority of the worlds troubles would be avoided wars would no longer be necessary and would probably be rare and unimportant the modern world is practical perhaps more so than it should be but anyway it is more inclined to look to the future than to dwell on the mistakes of the past it would be well if people could take the season of lent as a time to consider whether they could not do more for their own families and friends and for hu manity generally many people have needs which someone should attend to those who try to provide for these needs are blessed by the gratitude of the recipients and by the feeling that they have made an admirable contribution to the welfare of the community public will have planes whats going to happen to all the thousands of rcaf training aircraft after the war will they be useful for postwar private and commercial flying the answer is 99 percent no as c d howe minister of munitions and supply has pointed out the twinengined aircraft used for training bomber air crews aside from the fact that most of them will be pretty well worn out are not designed as economical ships for commercial use because the coat of flying a plane and its performance are far more important than its initial cost commercial airline operators will much prefer new ships and what about the private plane thousands of airmen are wondering about this question too canada has thousands of comparatively small singleengine twoseater trainers the latest of which was the sleek low wing cornell this was a fairchild design manu factured in canada under license even this lightest and newest of all air force training planes is much hea vier and harder to fly than the light civilian planes which were sold before the war and which will again go on sale immediately the war is over the cornell for in stance uses more than twice as much gasoline as the light civilian plane which also carries two people and flies at about the same speed this is because the air force needed heavier more difficulttofly planes if men were to be graduated quickly onto soupedup fighters and bombers in other words the conventional light plane which the average man will be able to afford to buy and own was too easy to flyfrom the air forces standpoint nevertheless thousands of men fighting in air forces overseas particularly those who fought in those early desperate days of the war did get their train ing on the light planes which have since been used as grasshopper ambulance and artillery spotting planes actually the biggest hurdle to converting air force light trainers to civilianuse is this every plane licensed for civilian flying must carry a certificate of airworthiness from the department of transport this is an elemental common sense safety precaution for civilian flying most of the air force trainers have spent many hours in the air and before an inspector will give them certificates of airworthiness he will require that they be given complete overhauls such overhauls on a cornell for instance cost almostthe same as the total cost of a brand new light plane which can be flown at about the same speed and for a fraction of the cost in other words there isnt much point in selling an air force veteran an old plane for 100 which will cost him 2000 to overhaul when he could buy a brand new one for the latter price perhaps a few of the newer trainers however will be able to secure certifi cates of airworthiness without overhaul and these it is reported will be given to flying clubs throughout the dominion by the government righi now nobody knows exactly how many companies will be building light planes in canada after the war the industry is full of rumors before the war only one company cub at hamilton ont built light planes in canada other makes were import ed one thing about it is certain its going to be a wild competitive scramble and the public will have planes inexpensive safe and easy to fly soldiers soliloquy found on the body of an australian soldier ye that have faith to look with fearless eyes beyond the anguish of a
