editor harold davison of the canadian weekly newspaper association and i ontarioquebec division of the cwna the editors column wi new faces in council a result of the recent civic elections we find four brandnew faces on the 1 946 town council and a familiar face returning after an absence of two years mayor cleave reeve macdonald and cr mcgilvray are the holdovers of a council whose year in ojifice saw such important world events as the end of hostilities with germany and japan and such municipal advances as the pjarihing for a sewerage system i- we will miss those five retiring councillors messrs lyons thompson orr bradley and arm strong all ot whom have served faithfully as public ser vants for terms ranging from two to seyen years they all have done a good job in positions of responsibility and we hope that as private citizens they will continue to interest themselves in the affairs of the town to the newcomers we offer our congratulations xn their choice as leaders in municipal life for the new year 1 946 will see georgtown faced with matters which require the utmost in attention housing prob lems new industrial developments a war memorial and a suitable remembrance to georgetown soldiers who have returned will be some of the items on the years agenda we hope that at the end of 1 946 we can say to them as we say now to the 1945 council thiknks far a job well done shop early ii its hard to realize that there are only ten shop ping days left before christmas already main street stores are putting in their christmas windows and though goods are scarce this year merchants have man aged to get a few of the scarce items and christmas shopping is heading back towards normal childrens toys seem to be particularly plentiful as does jewelry chinaware and toilet goods clothing merchants are wellstocked in most ladies items ex cluding stockings of course but the man of the house can count on ties as his main article of adornment on christmas day if we are to believe all we hear about the limited supply of practically everything else he wears a few electrical goods are appearing on the scene with many products scheduled to be available by christmas day or shortly after and some stores are featuring gift certificates to take the place of the actual present until it arrives one tobacco merchant tells us that although he has been given no reason for thinking so he has an idea that cigars might be here in time to enjoy after the holiday turkey that is if you are having turkey for the market seems to be uncertain for this traditional element of christmas dinner all of which adds up to new significance for the timehonoured slogan do your christmas shopping early and if you are caught napping at the last min ute dont say we didnt warn you most stores will be open evenings all next week until 10 pm for those who cant get down in the daytime to do their shopping the lqrne scots are coming at time of writing no definite word has yet been received as to the exact date when the lome scots regiment will be arriving in brampton returning as a unit after four years overseas an official welcome to the men of peel duffenn and halton is being planned in brampon which is the headquarters of the unit a welcome home committee in the peel county town is busy with plans for decorating the streets with ban ners and hags and industries merchants and citizens are being asked to decorate their premises the council has drawn up a plan for parking restrictions and re routing of through traffic to side streets where there will be no interference with the celebration plans for the day call for a parade to gage park from the cnr station where lorries in charge of ser vice personnel from no 14 infantry training battalion will be used to stow kit bags and gear of the home coming troops at the park an enclosure is being erect ed for families and friends of the troops and this will be alphabetically subdivided in order to make reunions easier and quicker the actual ceremony at the park will be brief featuring welcome addresses by the district officer commanding m d 2 mayor harper bull of brampton and wardens of the three counties the maple leaf club will be open to members of the returning unit and nextofkin where hot drinks and sandwiches will be served and phone service will be available so that any member of the unit may tele phone home and advise his family of his arrival while this is the official homecoming of the regiment there will be no more than a dozen george town men of the hundred or more lome scots who have served overseas in this war the great majority of members of the regiment having been overseas long enough to amass the necessary number of points for repatriation are already back with us however many of these will be in brampton to greet thdir chums and it is expected that a large number of georgetowners will travel to brampton for the big day the mayor reeve and members of the council as well as repre sentatives of the local legion branch who havepeen asked to help in police duty will attend the function as well as members of the reserve regiment from geor getown be careful with fires this winter has seen several tragedies in on tario where fire from overheated stoves and defective chimneys has caused heavy loss of life while george town has never had such fatalities there is always a first time and fire chief latimer has asked us to draw the attention of readers to he danger that exists there is only one maxim to follow be careful make sure that stoves are checked at the proper time that pipes are cleaned before they are plugged up with soot and that your stove and furnace are in good working order welcome home as christmas approaches we get an indescrib ably wonderful feeling in reporting each new name in our welcome home column as we know that one more of our men in uniform will be doing what he has dreamed of for so long eating christmas dinner with his family again after three or tour years in distant lands the queen elizabeth and empress of scotland have brought several district men back home and more boats are expected into halifax this week so chances are we shall have more good news to report by next week it is too bad that all our men cannot be here and that some must of necessity spend another christ mas in england holland or germany however we know for a certainty that before the new year is far on its way they too will be home and if as the song says we can have a sleighride in july we can have our christmas then too in our hearts incidentally in the rush of reporting other peoples news we have overlooked something right on our own doorstep and that is that lev clark and reg broomhead are both discharged after long service over seas with the rcaf and are back with us in the herald shop helping to bring you a bigger better and earlier herald than it has been possible to do with a short staff christmas trees
