dept ottawa title canadian woekly newspapers association and the ontertoqaebec division of the owna the editors column horses are his hobby a hobby which has paid dividends in interest and enjoyment to his family as well as advertising georgetown throughout the ontario countryside has taken ken mcmillan to 27 horse shows and fall fairs during 1945 and already he is planning for next season and another tour of the show rings ken is a relative newcomer at the game as it was only in 1942 that he acquired dolly a shetland pony as the first of his stable of six ken who m addi tion to his international harvester agency also had a coal business at that time traded two tons of coal for dolly as a present for daughter joyce another shet land queenie was purchased soon after and that winterrheromome chief a hackney horse boosted the mcmillan stable to three the next year the mcmillans got the urge to exhibit at some of the neighbouring fall fairs and with warwick princess added as a mate for the chief and another pair of hackney ponies manor barbara s joy and manor lady davijoy valuable experience was gained and the elements of show decorum acquired in 1 944 the mcmillan s stable really went to town with a tour of 23 fall fairs 1 3 year old joyce ra pidly developed into a first rate tandem driver and mrs mcmillan has beaten some of the best lady drivers in th province las season saw an even heavier schedule as ken glad and joyce travelled to 27 shows and gar nered 55 red ribbons 64 blues and 43 third prizes 35 fourths 6 fifths i seventh and a special fall fairs visited included brampton mount forest orangeville lindsay bellevil e ga t milton owen sound teeswater meaford cha sworth mark ham erin markdale wingham kincardine and walk erton not to mention our own 99th annual fair in georgetown horse shows were at hamilton strat ford hillsburgh st catharines brampton lions club show brampton horsemen s association bramp on horse club fall show listowel and oakville lions club as the best fall fair ken nominates lindsay with st catharines drawing top spot as the best horse how teeswater and erin also get the nod as first va e fall fairs and it is his unbiased view that deorgetown is the most improved of the fail shows a bus man s holiday took him on ajookiri trip only to hamilton wentworth show in augus and to chicago in novem ber his proudest moment was at the gait show when joyce headed the junior equation class to give credit where it is due trainer jack mc kay plays a big share in the success of the stable and another important feature is the excellent accommoda tion provided in the air conditioned stable at glendro noch farm rural home of toronto mining man doug las g h wright the horses are now enjoying their winter s rest at the farm in preparation for another series of shows this year as we have said george own receives a large measure of publicity as the smart mcmillan trailer truck rols along ontario s highways this has helped geor getown fair by encouraging horsemen from farther re gions to exhibit here and ties m with ken s job as fall iair director and agricultural chairman of the local board of trade the social credit philosophy we are somewhat alarmed wi h the social cred it idea of let the government provide which seems more and more to prevail in the public mind these days no matter what project is d scuss d new high school sewerage recreation prograni et al invariably some one thinks the goverrjmen is going to magically pro vide the major backing and that it is going to cost the municipality little or nothing it docsn t take a s udent of economics or a college professor to realize that the more the government spends on such projects the more tax money mua be raised to pay for them and the tax s can come from no one but ourselves directly or indirectly we must pay for what we get and m any contemplated public work it is wiser to figure if the rnunicipahty pay for the project and not look to big handouts from outside sources the foolishness of this is shown on a smaller scale at a rec ent bruce county council meeting when every mumc ipality in bruce requested a grant of at least 10000 for some public work boiled down it meant that each municipality would itself have to provide the ten thous and for a county council is not a business firm and me rely act a custodian of funds received from county in the same way a provincial or a federal treas ury is- just that and we must realize the truism that ev ery government grant means a further dram on the public pocketbook it is a fact that poorer municipali ties stand to benefit at the expense of tnpse in better circumstances by an increase in federal spending from a selfish standpoint halton which is one of the more fortunate stands to lose more than it gains by jumping on the social credit bandwagon and we might better spend our time campaigning for less government sup port of public works j a government paint job liberally decorated with red tape the new car models are beginning o appear on the market out for mr and mrs john doe the sign says please do not touch priori y certificates are required before a pros pective purchaser can do more than look at the new cars and up must satisfy the rationing officerof his need for a car that 75 per cen of the mileage consumed will be in connection with his business and must shov that he has not disposed of a serviceable passenger car in order to qualify for a new one eligible consumers are divided into two groups a and b the first including such people as physic lans and dentists public health nurses veterinarians etc the second including discharged service personnel who owned cars and operated them in connection with their businesses before enlisting taxi
