years hookey effort seem- d toohtnax years of contending for a cauunkdonshlp that was almost within our grasp with sport playing such a prominent part in the life of the com- idunry ftt the present time it occur red to us some time ago that probably there would toe others interested enough to follow he down memory lane if u were to recall some of the feats and stories of former years we could not hope to cover all the events and activities but might touch on the highlights in lacrosse hockey fjftseball racing etc in delving into the past we are eome- wbat hesrat as to where to begin this series our active participation in sports writing might take us back fifteen years but our memory would quite possibly reach back to the days of our youth when we followed the base- tall games from over the park fence ind salt at hockey fixtures in the new vena until our parents wondered what kind of a place this new ice palace was that kept their sons out so late in or- hex that they might see the finish of overtime games but in the beginning we think it would be well to go back to the turn of the century the years 189596 were great years for the duaexis of georgetown just as the past hockey has been for the imffers at that time lacrosse was the flourishing game the national game of this community of course ft was field la crosse in those days and while some maintain the modern box lacrosse is ah improved game over those days the oldtimers still hold to field lacrosse 3b 189506 the lacrosse team won the intermediate onbarip championship and the chib was known as the aet- i has those who can recall tbeaet- i das swear by them asone of the best fauna that ever toted a lacrosse stick while a number of the members of that team have since passed on at least two of 1he star prom 1896 until 1922 there does not seem anything outstanding to record in sports annals unless it would be the fact that tom longboat oneof the greatest long distance runners of hts time once lived in georgetown hockey andbaseball teams were- ev er a source of enjoyment with the winter activities taking place on open air rinks we have been iolavthat many exciting games between glen williams acton georgetown ingle- wood and brampton took place on this rink which in later years was located in the flats just below- the grist mill sports held sway in glen williams aboutthis time also and we are told that rivalry was so keen that the geor getown players often had to clear out of the village in a hurry after a game with talk of a new skating rink in the glen this year much of the old rival ry and competition may again be re vived in the district in our next article and we dont promise them every week we will tell you about the building of the arena in 1922 around which activities have centred since that tune this and that in sport by q mac mcgilvray it will be good news to local ball fans to know that an intermediate hardball team will supply summer entertain ment after a lapse of george nabbed ten trout meas uring 7 and a half to 10 and a half inches between inglewood and the credit porks his secret is in the fly which he tied himself he is particu larly proud that he was fishing in wa ter where many others had been fish ing with worms and proved that the hoare fly has something george makes his hobby pay by ty ing flies for sale and there is quite a demand among his fishing cronies for these there seems to be a renewed interest in fishing this season and we notice the three toronto daules all running fishing columns we cant promise that every issue but if you fishermen will give us the information well be pleased to feature it among our sports news how about it hobbies and handicrafts h j newman during the war years many hobbies and handicrafts were shelved for the duration they had to be there was neither time nor material to spend on this type of recreational activity but now that we are in the middle of our first peacetime spring we should delve backward into the cupboard of time and see just what it was that we left on the shell nearly seven years ago some of us will have to go back far- herthnl39 every man and child has some hobby at
