invention of each new instrument of destruction god is forcing us to learn or else we have about reached the place where we must live together or die separately the choice is ours but once we have chosen we may not revoke the consequences at tendant upon our- choosing this weeks lesson text brings to light some of the teachings ol jesus on tlu matter a personal arid com munity application of these would at least be worth a try if that try would increase- our ability tolive together jesus suggests a method of dealing with the disputes which inevitably ar ise where imperfect beings live in com munity there are four steps in his me thod 1 be frankly realistic where wrong is done not evading the issue or con fusing it like britain and the ujba with fascist spain face the fact 2 approach the one you consider to be in the wrong and talk with him privately but in a friendly manner it is surprising how many quarrels cornel from misunderstandings that a frank and friendly conversation can clear up friendliness is essential hostility will make the hackles rise on your oppon ents back harden him in his course and foredoom any attempt at reconcil iation 3 ii that is unsuccessful discuss the matter in the presence of two or three witnesses two heads are better than one ancvwhere two or three feci the same wai it looks as if the minority may bem the wrong and it may so be convinced 4 if this should prove unsuccessful outline ihc whole story frankly before the christian community and let your epponent ouline his side of the dispute having the facts the people may jud ge the right and the wrong of the situ ation if the pary judged to be wrong will not admit it and accept the judge ment there is only one thing let to do let him be to you as n heathen in personal labour and in tern a ion al disputes what would this mean to day human relationships however are not always so clear cut that you can say one party is in the right and ano ther in the wrong often both parties ate both right and wrong there are just grievances on both sides no one is perfect all make mistakes same- times without intending li we do ser ious wrongs what is to be done ab out it for jesus the solution lies in the constant practice of forgiveness in a society of imperfect people the practise of forgiveness is necessary if people are going to live peaceably to gether at all you forgive others for the wrongs they do you and you need their forgiveness for the wrong things you do if peope are to live together theyve got to give up the idea that anyone ls always right and others are always wrong pray god we learn this lesson soon its not just written in a book its e lesson written large in our everyday life it is significant that the only social obligation touched on in the lords prayer is this one of forgiveness je sus is aware that the one great hin drance to right relations among men is the unwillingness to overlook injuries ii we allow our behaviour to be guided bytha tafthavlrmr- of those who have i jured us what better are we than they we are limited in the good we may do without the forgiving spirit we cannot enter into any true relation either with our fellowmen or with god forgiveness is the great attribu te of god and just in proportion as we share it we prove ourselves to be his children our moral likeness to god is tested by our capacity to forgive se venty times seven peter old man the last of the lesson text emphasi zes one pi the greatest causes of dis putes uamong men it caused disputing among the disciples tt jesus greedy ambition for power and prestige and position who is to be the greatest james and john wanted the highest positions if they wanted this in order to lord it over the rest intimated jes us then their ambition was wrong if they wanted the privilege of serving their fellows perhaps by carrying a heavy load maybe of suffering it was good and would qualify them finally for the positions they desired the right of governing men has caused the greatest disputes among men who has the right to govern the wealthy the educated the parasites especially bred and protected and educated those who are able to pull the political strings and manipulate the puppets jesus teaches that those who serve the community best are those qualified to hold the highest position in the com munity those who make the greatest contribution to the welfare of all does this mean the workers and who are the workers does this mean dicta torship of the proletariat and what is the true proletariat greater love bath no man than this that a man lay down txks life for bis friends is not such a man a member of the true proletariat jesus christ was the greatest servant of humanity oothat basis be more quautfed than any other man
