and district citizens for public service rendered first of all our hat is off to the glen for just about the finest welcome home that anyone could ever dream up for servicemen and women there wasn t anything lacking and we can imagine the months of planning necessary to put over the ambitious program perhaps the garden party comedian was hitting home when he said georgetown was laid out very nicely and in fact had been laid out for a good many years at any rate council took some definite action last week to follow the good e set by the glen and to start plans for a similar welcome here another group worthy of commendation is the lions club which put on one of the finest holiday week end shows that any town could wish for over the dom inion day week end if anything they erred on the side of offering too much with a horse show street dance sunday service sports day parade and garden party it was an auspicious start for an annual eent and we have heard nothing but goofl comments on ev ery side we are proud too of our lome scots band which won new honours at the waterloo festival sometimes we are too prone to take things on our doorstep for granted and we wonder how many people in town rea hze that the lome scots band is far above being just a good band and is in reality amonf the top musical outfits in the province with the war over and more recruits available we 11 be looking for something big for them at the c n e when it reopens next year while handing out bouquets we think the taxpay ers should be proud too of the teen agers and the re creational council for brushing aside the dust of years end putting some signs of life into the auditorium of the old town hall it s remarkable what a bit of paint and elbow grease can do and in the year to come keep your eye on that building it s days of usefulness are far from past and it has the makings of a first rate re creational centre one last bouquet and that to the enthusiasts who have revived baseball in town not on y have we o b a entries in intejmediate and juvenile groups but the baseball fever has spread among the youngsters and georgetown is taking its place once more in the sum mer sporting picture another man of the month recently we reprinted two articles from pro vincials paper dealing with the hoare brothers of georgetown and merrttton the june issue of the mag azine honours another georgetowner as the man of the month and here s what they have to say when will merritt old time georgetown pa per maker got his first job back ia 1904 laying the foundation for provincial paper limited a georgetown coating mill he also began laying the foundation for a 42 year career as a paper maker a career that is likely to go on for quite a while yet after he had finished laying the foundation he got into the paper business on the ground floor by helping the carpenters to lay it when the mill was finished he was one of the first employees hired and he s been with us ever since a painstaking conscientious workman will is a real small town boy he dislikes thr big eitv where he goes regularly to see the hig league hockey games and prefers life in the quiet rural community near which he was born there he spends his spare time cultiva ing vegetables and flowers and following la crosse and hockey although will at one time or mother has wor ked on about every job in the coating mill right now he s a paster man working on a rrnrhme which pastes various types of paper securely togr her to make cardboard blotting playing card paper and many other specialty lines provincial paper limited dors all work of this type at georgetown coating mill paper being shipped there from our other mills to be coated pasted embos sed by special processes before 1940 will and his fellow workers used to coat paper or a machine which brushed the coating on in a relatively slow process now however coating is done on an ultra modern machine which blows the coating material evenly onto the paper without fear of streaking which always had to be watched for tn the old process will has watched this and many another dev- p and pasting with great mter- est and like other craftsmen of his experience has more than a little know how about the paper coating and pasting field he has lived in georgetown for 41 of his 62 years and says he has enjoyed every minute of it he has two daughters and one son now 32 who has followed his fathers footsteps by also entering the paper business holland and the canadians canadian troops who fought through holland when that country was liberated by the first canadian army are soon to receive copies of a fine souvenir book holland and the canadians published in am sterdam by the canada netherlands committee designed as a gift from the people of holland to their canadian liberators the book is an outstanding contribution to the literary and photographic records of the past war some 42000 copies have been alloca ted by the committee for distribu ion m canada and these have now been shipped from ottawa to army public relations officers in each of the nine provinces unfortunately here are too few books available to pro vide copies for every canadian soldier who saw service ui holland soldiers who served in holland and who desire a copy should communicate with the headquarters of their unit as a limited number of books have been sent to each unit the active battalion of which served in holland for distribi tion in a foreword to the book the dutch committee pays high tribute o the canadian army which won great glory by its courage and self denial and filled the hearts of our people with everlasting gratitude immediately after the liberation of the nether lands the instruction continues a desire was felt to of ter the canadian army v commemorative gift which could be kept b each individual recipiepi and which would gie expression to the admiration and gratitude of the dutch it was felt that such a gift should take the form of a book which under the title of holland and the canadnps would give a picture of he country they had liberated the book shows the country before the war scene of prqverbial prosperity with its fertile polders reclaimed during a struggle of cen uries with the sea the quiet cities with their sewnteenth century splendour side by sid with modt rn activities and the picturesque land scape wi h its broad motorways then there will be found pictures of the period of war and occupation m eluding the bombardment of rotterdam the looting of the country the raids ihe gradual pauperization of the people and their starvation and suffering during the cold war winters and also scenes of the underground resistance in the face of death with the heroic struggle for nijmegen and arn hem began the liberation of the country which with the conquest of zeeland and the eastern provinces ulti mately led to the capitulation of the enemy finally a number of pictures show the glorious entry and the enthusiastic reception of the canadians throughout the country altogether there are i 50 splendid pho ographs in this 10x14 inch book augmented by a text to make up 72 full pages mr j nikork secretary of the can ada netherlands committee and major norman phil lips of canadian army public relations collaborated on writing the tex and captions and many of the illus trafions are official photographs provided by the film and pho o unit of public relations to many recipients the book will be a collector s item it will play its part in strengthening the ties be tween the people of the netherlands
