georgetown your shopping centre from near and far georgetown will be the mecca for hundreds of visitors during the centennial fall fair on september 6 and 7 then as now you will find george town merchants ready to serve you with that friendly service which is characteristic in our town georgetown board of trade rltail o i v i s i n the editors column end of the season though georgetown finished up the baseball season slightly in the rear we havent any doubts that our intermediate team is any less championship calibre than either of the league leaders and it was only a few tough breaks which put them out of a play off spot it has been great to see the boys in action in the park after a layoff during the war years patronage of the fans was fair with crowds ranging from 1 50 to 200 for the nine games played in the park its too bad we didnt make the play offs but everyone cant win and at least we took some of the cockiness out of acton in the last game here last wednesday with all four teams start ing afresh and not many newcomers in the lineup it was mostly a question of which group of old timers had the edge everyone played their bes and there are some likely prospects among local juveniles to swell the intermediate ranks in years to come from the statistics it would seem that the paper makers played better on the road than at home as five of their eight victories were chalked up away they stacked up better against the first place oakville outfit with three wins than against either acton or milton home games won were against oakville 2 and ac ton there are only a few minor criticisms which might be offered to make next season even more sue cessful than this being a newcomer to baseball we should hesitate o criticize team or individual play which has perhaps tended to make our write ups lack the colour they should have another season we 11 feel better equipped to stick our neck out like the repor ters in tannery town we do hope that next vear the mathematical wizards who draw up the grouping will try for a more evenly balanced schedule and not have teams meet each other three times in a row or have a string of home games and then a long break away from home this tends to restrain a continued interest among the fans as a supplement to advertising a baseball tonight pennant strung across the main street has been successfully used in many towns to drum up inter et in the games then too we should like to see those rumoured players benches by another year a succcessful meet judging from opinions we have heard the track and field meet on civic holiday was a success and the recreational council is to be congratulated on attempt ing such an ambitious affair in a town which is not par ticularly trackandfieldminded the afternoon crowd was about what was expected and we would judge num bered about 400 it is true that a field meet from a spectators standpoint has a limited appeal and a large crowd was not anticipated but we do think those who didnt come out missed something well worth seeing it is now to be hoped that with the recreational council promoting interest in track and field and al ready planning another meet next year that the local and district schools will encourage students to train in this healthful type of sport it is essential for any young person who wants to be a star on the track that he spends many hours practising and the proper incentive t can be given by his physical training teacher one hundred years young september 7th will be a red letter day in the georgetown district when everyone flocks to george town park for the centennial celebration of georgetown fall fair presented by the esquesing agricultural soc lety to commemorate the event the society has issued a souvenir booklet combining the prize list with a his toncal sketch and several photographs and there was a brisk demand for these as they went on sale last satur day this year s fair really promises to be tops in a hundred years of first rate shows prize classes and prize money have been substantially increased a good midway booked the lome scots band and girls pipe band will both be present and the largest crowd in the
