georgetown sept 6 7 the editors column to whom does a present belbnti there seems to be some concern about the abil- ik of georgetowns ex servicemen to handle money nd we are beginning to wonder if the federal govern meat should not reconsider its monetary grants which in many cases amount to several hundreds of dollars ancl put the dominions gift in some more concrete form such as a nice new automobile or a chesterfield suite the feeling among some people is ttyat the vet eran will have on glorious splurge with the 50 bond which is to be the towns token of gratitude for services rendered and that he will have nothing in the future to which he can point as the gift which georgetown citizens gave him we are not in entire disagreement with this an xious minority and will admit that there may be an odd veteran who will blow this money similarly if a watch or ring were given there might conceivably be a vet or two who would visit a pawn shop some day and put the treasure in hock receiving an amount much less than 50 for a minor spree at the towns expense however we do think it is going too far when we accuse the large percentage of our youthful male population of being more interested in carousing than in living a normal domesticated life we can think of dozens of young people who will put this money into something equally as tangible as a piece of jewelry into payment on a house or furniture as a nest egg for their childrens education or to buy some luxury for their home which ordinarily could not be included in the family budget as a matter of fact it is our belief that the average veteran will treasure the bond and what it buys equally as much as he would treasure any specific gift chosen by a group of his fellowmen to this we might add a theoretical question to whom does a present belong surely it is the right of the recipient to do as he wishes with it and if the foolish one would value a spree more than a tan- gible articlfertrrattbfor himtoehoose theamportani tiling will be that we as citizens have made a token gift to our service people tn exchange for a much greater gift which we as civilians received from them a war memorial the idea of a permanent war memorial has been shelved for the time being in view of the extremely un settled conditions of labour and materials the war service recognition committee at last weeks meeting dealt in some detail with many proposals swimming pool arena renovation recreation building high school and always came up against the same stonewall present conditions it was suggested and we hope that this is car ried out that in the interim a plaque naming those who fell m this war should be added to the cenotaph this is the jeast that could be done at present to show respect for the brave young menwho cannot be paid materially f ot their sacrifice we should not like to think that a permanent war memorial has been shelved postponed would be a word which would be more fitting perhaps by way of explanation from time to time we have been plugging away al the bugaboo of the weekly newspaper the delin quent subscription list we are particularly anxious to get our list on a paid inadvance basis because we intend to join the audit bureau of circulation the coming thing for the weekly newspaper which wishes to keep its national advertisers which supply a substan tial part of the revenue necessary to keep us in business the bureau in trnt all subscriptions be paid in ad vance in order to maintain membership a policy fol flowed by our neighbours in brampton and by all daily papers and magazines another reason for our desire for paid in ad ance is that every now and then a subscriber will argue tha he ordered the paper for only a year and that if we continued to send it that was none of his busi ness to that of course we can argue that the proper procedure is to refuse to accept this at the post office but even so it leads to difficult situations now and then which can be avoided by a cleancut businesslike sys tern last week we started using a rubber stamp on subscriptions which were six months or more in arrears advising jth at the subscription had expired and a renew al solicited two or three subscribers seemed to take of fence and assume that we were doubting their inten- k of ever paying quite the contrary for although sallowed some subscriptions to lag we have
