that the bsquesing fair u the first tbl tern ontario to erect a centenary pylon and flagpole given p ontario department of agxicultnre for one he tton in the agricultural field and fhat only five have 1 in eastern ontario to date it can readily be seen tbat tbe 1 society was one of the first to take up the torch for the wovwatai the pioneer farmer fairs in eastern ontario which havejpaassdf century mark include delta organized in 1830 port hope 1 ernesttown 1885 carleton co 1844 and vankleek bill 1014 a pioneer beginnina picture if you can the pioneer farmers of the hut century l decided to organize for the first fair arid agricultural itodety jam of this country was still in a very primitive state tbe tog cabin i still in evidence especially farther to the west there was not i great deal of clearance although the more uptodate and farmer had progressed considerably by this time motor c unheard of and oxen teams were still in use on the farm woo picture some of the pioneers came to- that first organization l by oxen cart old journal reports it is almost impossible to get a true glimpse of proceedings i the first organization meeting oldtimers sayrvwas held in tbe f township hall at stewarttown and at that time ibis was a r community with a large number of inhabitants taverns stores industry government records do not reach back far enough f which we may obtain infoamation but a paragraph from joi and transactions of the board of agriculture of upper canada vol 1 toronto 1856 extract from county report p527 says the t ships of nelson trafalgar and esquesing have each societies ushed therein for some length of time and from the exhibitions 1 during the summer in these fine townships we can- truly say 1 their agriculture is at present in an advanced state as late as 1858 pounds shillings and pence were still in i dence and a further paragraph from the journal reads as folic p71 one hundred and one members amount of subscriptions i government grant 24 total receipts including balance from vious year 75 15s 6d total disbursements in premiums and gen expenses 62 15s owd balance in treasurers hands 13 0a 5d p 240 esquesing one hundred and thirtysix amount of subscriptions 36 10s balance from 1855 13 13s 11m share of public grant 20 5s total receipts 84 8s llwd arnoi paid in premiums 52 17s 6d incidental expenses 14 ls 4ws balance in hand 17 10s id while the first fair was held in 1846 it was not until beti 186468 that the society asked that a charter be filed the first fair it must have been an exciting day for those pioneer 1 as they brought their produce and livestock to stewarttown for 4 hibition we understand the hall at stewarttown was used for playing the vegetables grain and ladies work while the fair prop took place in murrays field behind the present schoolhouse on f top of the hill there were probably lines of hooked rugs mitts l socks as the womenfolk vied for the honors as well as those t ous loaves of homemade bread buns and sausages that are 7 to be conspicuous by their absence at present day shows while records are meagre to substantiate our claims we 1 lieve that one abraham scott was the first president of the sodf col john murray grandfather of j c murray still a resident- 0 stewarttown was the first secretarytreasurer not many have b- this position in the one hundred years l grant j a tracy i wm a wilson held the secretaryship for quite a number of ye while only recently oscar lerch frank petch and garfield l gil the p secretaryhave had termsof short-duf- about 1875 the fair was moved from stewarttown to i town and was held in the market square which was then land bordered by market church edith and factory streets- as now it was only a one day fair and the square was boarded i by an eight foot fence along these streets for the fair the old c hall that stood below the library was used for display purposes first show on the present grounds in the georgetown park took in 1889 around this time the fair being a township fair i alternate years in acton and georgetown and it was not until that the last fair was held in acton it was in 1007 tbat w a t now a life member of the esquesing agricultural society sident joe flynn of acton was president in 1908 and john 4 ham in the year 1900 lit 1907 the society organized a plowing i that drew much attention and this was held in william cleaves f interviewing w a wilson probably tbe one man living i knows more about the society than anyone else he informs us 1 he can remember his father showing an imported preston bay rx at esquesing fair back in 1879 w j alexander another of the oldi members and now vlcepresidehtotthe memory and can recall many of the exhibitors back in the and early 90s brain bros showed oxen imported shorthorns i exhibited by thomas boak leicester sheep were shown also by t bros while henry ross was the first exhibitor of holsteuvs john brownridge was an outstanding exhibitor of yorkshire worth and berkshire pigs and his early breeding of registered t has been carried oil down through the years by his descendants 1 to this day breed and export high quality hogs other large 1 of pigs were jim
