a great deal larger with the membership now nearing the 400 mark one of the main items of the even ing was the election of sam tennant as entertainment convtahor comrade charlie parton had resigned in june and the work had been carried during the summer by comrade alex taylor the secretary wallace thompson read a letter be had received from the provincial command asking that delegates be sent to the convention held last sunday it was decided to leave the selection of these to the djs- oretton of the president comrade cousens brought up the matter of approaching council to that the street to be laid from no 7 highway in to the site of tbe wartime houses now under construction be named by the legion branch this suggestion was met with enthusiasm and it was decided to contact council immediately the idea was to name the street after one of the battlefields of the canadian army in world war n such as dieppe road fslalse or some other such name new tables and chairs have been ob tained for the beverage room and add a great deal to the appearance of the several new members have been ac cepted in pie branch and an initiation will be held in the near future the number to be initiated win be around the twenty mark the executive seem to have had a busy summer meeting on the average at every two weeks this was a result of the remodelling going on plus a tremendous backlog dealers of toronto district was held on the p of bud earle located a few miles south of bramp ton east of no 10 highway some twenty jeeps thrilled spectators with their ability ut handle easily a num ber of tough assignments for example tbe jeeps gave hlbiuons of ploughing dlaharrowlng cultivating sawing wood digging poi holes operating a hammer mill tow ing etc it was shown bow these ver satile vehicles coum be used for carry- ing grain and stock to town and trans porting the family altho they resemble in- many ways the wartime jeep it was em phasized that the peacetime version is different in many respects from the original pleasing color combinations contrast with the dull olive drab of the army uniform the engine baa been greatly improved for increased economy and- steppedup performance in fact it has been reengineered throughout for its present duties a highlight of the program was the first official showing in canada of the new jeep station wagon a smart- looking unit with fourcylinder sixty- hree horsepower engine and allsteel body which can be converted to ei ther business or recreational use among the mechanical features are counterweighted crank shaft a gear- driven camshaft and independent frontwheel suspension the metal body painted to simulate wood seats comfortably seats may be removed to provide storage space for goods or merchandise pubuc school news the first term of the 1946 year is well under way with an enrol ment of 315 we are happy to report that miss hume our grade 1 tf is p satisfactorily m th guelph general hospital but tt wbl be some time yet before she win be able to resume her work at tbe pubbe school in the meantime mtas t scott will continue to carry on ml humes work our thanks go to miss georgma young who took over tha work school girts to gtm our girls quite a trimming to sort of even up for the boys after the fleu day on thursday the boys are going to play again and we bear the ghfl fellows are really out for revenge r school treasury i a concentrated pa per drive wul be made du ttao week of october 21 first peace time fair at acton sees many new events the first peacetime fair in seven years at acton j see many of the old features revived and new ones in troduced back comes r the first night big arena show on friday october 4th with horses box in ponies clowns bands and han exhibits open tbe second day on saturday octo ber 5th sees horse racing back again on a good fast track the prise list should draw the biggest exhibit of horses and livestock ever shown at this fair back again from wartime use is
