ingfche debut of a local dramatic group advance re- portsof their first show give promise of it being top- notch and a capacity audience is anticipated at the old town hall we are especially interested in the laff revue as it is called because we had some small con tnbntbry part in inaugurating apprentice productions it was an article in this column which first put the germ of an idea in the heads of director jack thompson and the other members of the group and we hope that their first offering will merit the laying of more ambitious future plans in case any doubt exists as to membership ehgi bility in apprentice productions we have been asked to comment on the organization its ranks are open to anyone who has a wish to make dramatics his hobby the charter members are those who originally ban ded together in response to a newspaper advertisement and pledged themselves to regular attendance at meet ings and rehearsals because they believed that it would weaken the effectiveness of the group to prevail on new members to join they adopted the procedure of waiting for wouldbe thespians to seek admittance feeling that this would be convincing proof of their interest anyone who would like to join apprentice pro frictions has merely to mention this to director thomp son or the president mrs stewart magwood and the door is open there is no lif to number who can be included in a dramatic group technicians 5 hands set designers are equally as important as actors and actresses the group would like readers to look on this editorial as an open invitation to join where are our postwar architects during the war we seem to recall many articles in newspapers and thagazines about post war designing of homes and locations we read of how homes would be designed to suit their localities how groups of hou ses would be staggered how revolutionary improve ments would be made in home conveniences a look at building developments in toronto and suburbs must dismiss this as fantasy on the part of the authors or a deplorable lack of architects with ideas on a recent dnve to the city we were particularly struck by the lack of imagination in any of the housing projects viewed long lines of houses alike as peas in a pod placed with mathematical precision at exactly the same distance from the sidewalk are the exact opposite of the promi sed dream homes surrounding land is inadequate to give either privacy beauty or garden space for city folk and except for the temporary attraction of newness they are like the blocks and blocks of similar drabness which characterize torontos residential districts in georgetown s wartime housing development we see evidence of lack of common sense on the part of a government department which should know better this is the absence of cellars in small houses where sto rage space would be invaluable to the future occupants we have heard dozens of people comment on the fact that with very little more digging cellars could have been put under the houses for considerable excavating was necessary to place concrete foundations and much of the dirt taken ou by bulldozers was afterwards sho velled back in with or without cellars the houses are desperately necessary but it does seem a shame that when the government is going so far it couldn t have done a thorough job of it nomination once again once again on friday night local politicians take the floor at the annual municipal nomination meeting this year the meeting will have a change of scene from the library to the municipal building as customary after
