wednesday afternoon at the office on main st georgetown authorized as second class mall post office dept ottawa member of the canadian weekly newspapers association and tbe ontario quebec division of the cwjia the editors column family reunions a fine custonrat this time of year is the habit of descendants of pioneer families to gather together for a picnic and family reunion recently we have reported such gatherings of the lyons howden and caldwell families and this week an account o the leslie clan reunion appears elsewhere in the paper families like the lyons and leslies have gone to the further trouble of compiling family histories tracing their geneology back to the early 1800 s such records are of historical alue not only to the families themselves but to the country and every family should be interested in their early origin particularly if it has roots deep in cana dian history we can t help being proud of the fact that we are descended from john biehn who emigrated from switzerland to pennsylvania in the eighteenth century and whose sons settled in waterloo county about 1812 and that our maternal great grandfather was adam scott elliott who was granted land from the crown subdivided and sold lots to establish what 13 rjow the town of chesley in bruce county it is interesting too to trace occupations in fa milies the biehns up to the preceding generations were mennonite and ornish farm folk but their interest shifted to professional lines and we now find a prepon derance of dentists and doctors with very few members remaining on the land all of which is intended to show that we appre ciate how much a family reunion means to people like the leslies and the lyons and that we would urge ev ery family to adopt the reunion procedure and start compiling family histories transatlantic visits with the war over many of our townsfolk are looking forward to visits with relatives in the old coun try in the past length of travelling time was sometimes a stumbling block particularly for the family bread- winner who could not take such a long vacation now we find more and more making the fast trip by plane mrs andv dewhurst mrs m lawr mr and mrs tim stacey mrs daniel banks and miss freda her bert are among those who hae already travelled this way and others like james murphy are planning similar rips as the majority of georgetown residents are of british origin there are very few who have not immediate relatives in england and scotland and it is wonderful to think that meeting with these can now be thought of in hours rather than in days a county spirit speaking of family ties in th preceding editor ials reminds us of the difference between counties as- a stranger in halton when we came here we noticed immediately how little association there seemed to be letween the component mumcipaities people in georgetown know and care little about what happens in burlington and oakville our county town of mil ton is rarely visited by any georgetowners unless on official business and acton and georgetown are closest together when they are farthest apart in hockev sea son in bruce county the picture changes here there seems to be not only a town unity or local patriotism huttonville park sun aug 3 community sinssons ted rust ventriloquut presents midnight dance sunday aug 3 modern aires dancing 1205 to 3 am wed7aug6 johnny boyd and hit orchestra sat aug 9 martkenney featuring norma locke and roy roberta dancing every wednesday saturday wednesday merrmakr saturday al kuhn coming aug 30 bfl gauny mm hit qnsoitni we might call it but a county unity as well we can still recall shortly after arriving in georgetown a glen resident introducing himself as being from wiarton im from bruce too forms a quick bond of friendship for strangers and yet we doubt if two people would ever rejoice to find that they were county neighbours back in halton ot course there are reasons halton is much more of a suburban county than bruce surrounded as it is by large cities hamilton toronto and guelph and with a population which shifts more rapidly we tend to be more like city folk there is less mter-mar- nage between residents of neighbouring towns more changes in personnel of local factories and business es tablishments counties like bruce are homogeneous more because of their geographical position than any other factor though we must not discount the fact that a large percentage of the population is of scotch des cent which also might account for this clanmshness we see this we k thai cliff rd bnutltv has sold his
