and the ontario quebec division of the cwxa the editors column catching up a word of thanks to the readers who commen ted on our recent editorials on the changing scene editorial writing for a town newspaper while it may seem an easy job is not that by any means though from time fo time we have been guilty of a fault which frequently appears in many weeklies indiscriminate clipping of other opinions anything to fill up space wetiave tried to keep this column personal in the sehw that it reflects opinions of the writer and has a local touch at times these requirements lead us to a point of desperation and at times like last week we omit the editorial column altogether and at other tunes resort to factual information such as the changing scse whxch has been used three or four times in the past few years such writings while they cannot be jtidged strictly as editorials contain we believe impor tant information which fulfils a threefold purpose informing former residents now domiciled elsewhere of changes in the town bringing our newer residents in formation about the town which they might otherwise not know and recording historical material which years after the herald has a new editor and new rea ders will contribute to the history of georgetown we should like to remind those who felt sligh ted that their business or home was not mentioned that the changing scene encompassed only the period since we arrived in georgetown in early 1940 a nat ive whose memory goes back much farther has promi sed to compile the business changes from a much ear lier date and this will be a treat to look forward to in some future issue by way of catching up however there are a few corrections on our articles which have come to our a ttention hawes and nelson have taken over all of the construction work of the georgetown lumber company rather than some of it as we said two industries were inadvertently omitted the one eds concrete products through which mr ed peters has provided much of the materials going into new georgetown and district homes and barber indus tries show card and display signs operated by brothers paul and bob barber in the upper storey of the old ar nold glove factory new businesses should also have included tom eason s rosedale floral and al nortons norton floral both thriving greenhouses which have filled a need in the town for products formerly produ ced by the barber floral company which closed its greenhouses on king street during the war years that the changing scene is just that is shown in the fact that even in the bnef period since our two articles the maher shoe stores have purchased the business established here in the fall by jack doran and just this week end there has been a change m manage ment at the georgetown cafe surely its time the absolute ineffectually of the retail division of the board of trade which should be the strongest factor in any such group has been shown time after tune surely with so many new merchants to fill the ranks and with conditions gradually getting back to the situation where a merchant keefep all his goods for sale above the counter the georgetown merchants could for their communal good reform an active re tail board which could bring more business to the town and keep more business here which tends to go to brampton guelph and toronto the present system is ridiculous in that a three- man committee was established over a year ago with no provision being made for holding regular meetings of all merchants or for dividing merchants into associ ated groups which could deal with questions affecting their own particular interests the present committee under the chairmanship of mr clarence bain has done its best but has met discouragements and lack of interest which have been wellnigh insurmountable we would suggest that early in the new year this committee cah a general meeting of all merchants and try to form a strong organization to deal with re tail questions there are dozens of things which could be done in the general interest and if georgetown is to successfully compete with larger centres for the shop pers dollar it is morelhan time for the initial action to be taken t juvenile leagues looks good hockey fans are in for a treat this winter if pre sent plans of the georgetown recreational council materialize for a sponsored juvenile league at least two merchants jack cotton of brills dept store and jewellers have definitely indicated their in- emtovmff isssgot teams and at least one other merchant is definitely interested as is the norval com munity while there is a good chance that glen wil liams rnay also enter a team the league with age limit set at age 18 on no vember 15 th this- year and taking in fif teenyear olds who in other years were classed ds midgets would be considerably stronger thtin4arear when two local juvenile teams played a rather uninspired series chiefly notable pr the lack of spectators and organization with the sponsors devoting their time and iponey to encouragement o their teains we can expect a much better brand of hockey which in turn will bring fans to the games and there is no reason why a juvenile league cannot draw em in at the johmstreet ice pal ace in considerable mimbers in order to aid the g r c hockey committee prospective sponsors are urgojt to immediately contact the g r c and juveniles who wish to play should get in touch right away with recreational director hal newman for registration as one stipulation before a player signs with any team is that he be so registered the league will be wideopen mthat sponsors will re cruit their own teams and once signed a player cannot transfer to another team without ail official release how you will benefit by reading the mnlu soke homiwl
