th6 georgetown herald wednesday evening december 17th 1947 wednesday evening december 17th 1947 o i hutt give vuwtoh margaiina in view of the current discus sion on tile margarine question the following lettar which appeared in tf toronto globe and mail recent ly win heof interest it was writ ten by prof fred hutt of cornell tjnhrwrsity who ifl the son of prof and mrs h l hutt of georgetown o mr l s lee of ths domestic packers and processors association of canada talced a page of your paper november 28 to teu can adians tha butter is better than margarine as he cites data from publications in the united states have compsfiy and want to make ions of a margarine eater in that an impression 1 can never tell h to to be booed that a few conies- which i am eating unless the mar- slons of a rnargertno sater in that country will not be considered out of placa hia analysis cited by him rhra the amount of vitamin a in batter 8800 units per pound against only 1980 in margarine on exa mining packages of margarine of three different brands in our refri gerator i find that all three con tain not leas than 100 units of vitamin a or almost five times as much as in miy lees potted ox but ter we dont boy it for that rea son but merely because it costs us less than half the current price of bitter for us college professors as for other members of the poorer classes that is an important consi deration of course we huy butter too christmas eve dance wednesday december 24th special prizes rose room georgetown arena the modern aires dancing 9 to 1 admission 75c per person garine boat cob of hot corn then it looks a httte streaky saving oba nargarlnt mr lee makes quite a point ab out margarine having no riboflavin or niacin nicotinic acid whereas his pound of battel contains a whole hundredth of a milligram of the former and a tenth of a milli gram of niacin that doesnt worry we at all both of these occur in most plant and animal tissues so we get plenty from our milk meat eggs vegetables salads and other things that we eat in addition to margarine as for calcium there isn t much in margarine but our family of five drinks about eigh teen quarts of milk a week and that along with what we get from other sources more than meets our needs for calcium these are american quarts about 20 smaller than imperial quarts they cost ua twen ty two cents each since we are sup porting the dairy industry at a rate of 205 92 per year i think that it should not begrudge uj our little saving on the margarine now about mr lees new vacci- nic acid this might be important it reminds us of vaccination winch eer one knows to be important undoubted ve shall soon see in the magazines and press the inevi table horror pictures showing the uita itable stunted and bedraggled rut that couldln t or vouwn t eat act nnc acid in striking contrast we shall see its inevitably corpulent bi other wearing the smug and righ teous look of alb good rats that do tat their vitamins spinach and am ino acids there will be the inevi table lack of any evidence that man needs vaccinic acid as much as the rat does finally unless the story ptts out without the experimenters sttmg the proof there is not likely to be any statement under the pic tures to calm our jangled nerves v ith the assurance that we get plenty of vaccinic acid from a do zen different sources would help tfmu the sale of margarine may threa ten th dairy industry in some parte i of the wqrld but there is little evi- dancemiat it does so in this state at any rate butter is currently selling in this town for ninety cents per i pound and it seams doubtful if any producer is losing money on that one of the incomprehensible ar guments against margarine la that its manufacture would necessitate the importation of vegetable oils while the world s supply of these is currently short it would not be surprising if jamaica nigeria or some other oilproducing country would welcome the opportunity to expand production with a view to supplying a canadian market they might also be glad to take canadian goods in return is trade of this ort undesirable y ithaca ny f b hutt jack dempster wins 50 maher
