in his farewell address to the knox church congregation mr- cochrane spoke with profound con- viction on rwo problems which he believes of para mount importance r- the lack of recognition of the christian religion by the great majority of people and the failure of individuals and groups to lace realities in a grownup way he referred to the scriptural characters of john the baptist and jesus each bringing the same message and the one scorned because of his asceticism and failure to be as one with his listeners the other scorned jar op posite reasons he likened this scorn to the excuses made for nonattendance at church nowadays one group claiming that those who go to church are joot as good as they should be andanother group claiming that churchgoing christians are too far removed from normal hving both excuses are silly he said and he wonders why those who do not believe in christianity bother to make excuses at all a clever parallel likened mass thinking to child rens games children live in a world of halfreality which is expressed in their play you be the robbers and well be the cops the robbers are all bad and the cops will shoot them is the way the children play it you be the communists and well be the democrats you be management and well be labour you be the racial minority and well be the majority is the way grownups play it and he appealed to his lis teners to develop mature thinking and an acceptance of responsibility m community national and world af fairs in introducing his sermon mr cochrane said that he would like to say something that would be remem bered as long aa any member hearing his address was living but that he was not one who could rise to a spe cific occasion and usually when he developed an unua ually important theme it was to a preponderance of empty seats we are of the opinion that he rose to this occasion in a particularly impressive manner and his words will be remembered by those whose good for tune it was to hear them a sign of progress those who for several years have been concerned about the lack of any sort of building restrictions in georgetown will be pleased to see a bylaw now in ef feet which provides certain elementary controls under the jurisdiction of a building inspector who is yelto be appointed by council the bylaw has been hanging fire since last fall when the 1947 council tackled a draft bylaw jna midnight session and cut it down to size much has hpen climinatd from the original one of the itzol thnsfe being the zoning of tlle town lnto first second cass residential areas busif and industrial districts the present makeup of georg town as a heavilyindustrialized town mainly popula ted by highwage earners ib such that any type of zon ing is virtually impossible nor is zoning feasible in a small town where there are no large problems such aa in cities of large industrial areas and slum sections in habited by lowwage workers the most important parts of the by law deal with certain restrictions on the building of houses and with designating the main business district as a fire area where a number of fire prevention clauses will apply to new building or additions dwelling houses erected from now on must have a value of ot least 3000 as of 1 946 a floor area of 500 square feet or more and fifty feet frontage no dwelling or accessory building is to be less than twenty feet from street or road boun dary or less than five feet from either side of the lot boundary as a concession to ward 3 residents who had petitioned through one of their representatives cr goodlet houses built in that ward must have a 1943 valuation of at least 5000 this is the only discrimin atory section in the bylaw the complete building bylaw will appear in an early edition of this newspaper and we urge everyone to clip it out for ready reference- anyone contempla ting building a house business or industrial establish ment will have to be familiar with regulations and time can be saved by knowing these beforehand hockeys over this is undoubtedly the longest hockey season ttr recorded in georgetown and we would be remiss fa hot publicly thanking tihe team the coach the ho- tjiejr club exec and the board of parlu manage- jjmsst far wonderful season aa we said last week iun no shame attached to being beaten in the eastern canada finals by a slightly superior team the boys were treated royally in quebec by all reports and the fraternal visits of the adjoining provincial teams should help to develop a good neighbour feeling which is often lacking between canadas two leading provin ces rhe 1947 hockey season will be long talked over and already dyed n thewool fans are looking ahead to next year when thanks to artificial ice we should field an even stronger team with lots of practice time available in the early winter months the sport scene now shifts to baseball and it is to be hoped that summer sport gets a larger share of at- tention than it has in tho past last years team was no worldbeater but they played good ball and gave the few fans who turned put to the gainea their moneys worth cheering plays an important part in any sport and larger crowdstcould help a lot in making a better ball team lliis year too georgetown reenters the lacrow picture it ijhard to realize thatlacrossehas become extinct in a tawp which was once renowned for canadas natichal sport and we hajl watch with interest the attempt at revival among the young lads undc g r c sponsorship potpourri a news despatch in the acton and milton papers says that plans were submitted at a north halton high school district board meeting for a 2 room addition to milton high school and a oneroom addition in acton at a 65000 estimated cost which makes us wonder if the consolidated school has fallen through artificial ice is to be installed in milton arena by next icason it was announced by owner fred armstrong at a hockey dance in the county town last week the herald seemb pictonally dead this week after a twoweek splurge of hockey pictures we intend to feature more local pictures this year although the num ber is necessarily limited picture making or stereos as they are called is a specialized process which is done by city firms and the charge is too high to repro duce as manjr as we would like to building activity is still brisk in town several new houses are planned in the langdon survey on maple avenue in the kentner propertv off king street and on the tyers subdivision on the norval road it is also believed that a large property within the municipality is to be sub divided and sold for building lots this year it must be nice for the royal alexandra theatre man agement when they book a show like carousel tried to get seats last week and they were all sold out two weeks in advance except for a few of the high- bracket orchestra seats if the show is even half as good as oklahoma by the same producers it will be coming back in the fall so guess well wait till then a number of staff changes at the alliance paper mills thee past few months with several long- service employees retiring on pension directory soesswasassssssssssssasssai dr j burns milne jfray
