qneboc division of the cwtja the ditbr corner poppy day rc november 6th the local branch of the canadian legion is mak ing its annual poppy day appeal to the people of this community on november 6th the poppy fund is now a recognized institution wherevdr the canadian legion exists in canada and it serves a twofold pur pose of very great merit the money which is raised by the sale and distribution of the wreath and poppy the symbol of sacrifice is used entirely to relieve unusual distress among war veterans of all the empire wars and their families this is wfaere the poppy fund raised through the sale of wreaths and poppies by the local branch of the legion steps in and provides relief for the situation a highly important reason why every citizen should purchase a wreath long before our national day of soitotving november 1 1 to display in homes offices and everywhere that men and women live work or congregate and to also wear a poppy on poppy day saturday november 6th is that all vetcraft wreaths and poppies sold by the canadian legion arc manufactured in vetcraft shops throughout canada solely by partially disabled and handicapped veterans men and women who urgently require earnings in ad ditiori to their meagre pensions for their sustenance by purchasing a vetcraft wreath citizens can find much satisfaction in knowing that they are help ing these handicapped veterans to obtam a livelihood which they would otherwise lack on account of their special disabilities tins twofold appeal will find a ready response in the hearts and minds of the people of this community which has always been ready to make the way easier for those of its citizens who served country and em pire in the empire wars we commend it to your sympathetic consideration in the hope that you will respond generously and thus help to hold the torch flung to you by those who did not come back pot pourri it was erroneously reported in a news item last week that a barn owned by the ingles brothers which was destroyed by fire was empty we have since learned that a wagon and a raclf and a quantity of hay was destroyed in the fire with the announce ment by albert simson that he is opening a photo graphic studio on main street georgetown now has such a studio for the first time in several years the late henry sherman was the last photographer to oper ate such a business in town another sure sign of fall this week with garbage pickup reverting to once weekly in place of the summer twiceaweek collection st georges tennis club set a high mark in hall decorations at their dance last friday and every one at the dance was commenting on the wonderful effect achieved the modern aires were at their best and georgetown is lucky to harbour such a fine dance band we feel halloween seems to be well taken care of this y with a dance in the rose room friday sponsored by the lions and the usual grc party for the kiddies on saturday in teen town hall if you take our word for it there are only fifty shopping days left before christmas count them yourself if you dont believe it which reminds us to remind you that georgetown stores always have good selections and shopping at horn is as profitable and more pleasant than one of those lectic trips to the city saving hydro is just as important today as it was last reek so far georgetown has been one of the few fortunate municipalities which have not had one shutoff help to keep it that way by continuing to turn off all unnecessary lights and use electrical ap- plianceji as sparingly as possible we hear that mr and mrs h m stewart of wildwood will soon be come residents of the town proper the stewarts moved here a few years ago after mr stewarts retire- ment as a bank manager a serious stroke which he suffered last year has let him a semiinvalid and they are leaving their beautiful country home for a more convenient location in town at a choir get- together after church on sunday evening members of st georges choir were entertained with several beautiful colour photographs taken by one of george towns most enthusiastic cameramen mr w f brad ley he lias dozens of pictures taken at banff and lake louise as well as pictures of three of this seasons weddings those of darrell dawson lillian alderaon and barbara cousens local and district min isters are reminded that news accounts of church ser vices such as are appearing weekly about the united and buptiatochurches are welcomed and that the church announcements are published free of charge each week prcvdintfktbey do hot contain advertising of current events f v whats your beef we have had no takers as yet to inaugurate our whats your beef column so this week the editor will start the boll rolling with a beef he picked up from daily newspaper reports of last week it was an item that the income tax department has decided to allow protestant ministers to live in rentfree houses and charge no tax on the value of living accommodation provided a joint statement issued by finance minis ter abbott and revenue minister mccann expressed the opinion that it was doubtful if this could be done- under the income tax law as it stands but the exemp tion would apply pending an amendment to the act at the next session of parliament when it is i understood clergymen will be given a statutory right of some kind the reasons given for the exemption are that catholic pricbta subsist on their parish collections and because thciv income is derived from fees they aire not rcfluired to pay tax on the cental value of free living nccommd- datiort and secondly that the parsonage isiused to some extent for the general benefit of the congregation as- meetings and gatherings are held there whats our beef just this that two wrongs dont make a right and that thtt government instead of providing a system whereby the clergyof other de- nominations willnmake their fair conribut oni to the tax exchequer have broadened the interpretation of the act to exempt a further large group from certain taxes it will hardly meet with approval from ihe army of tax payers who weekly and at the end of each year contri bute a large slice of their earnings to tax payments halloween special try cordaro home made candies 39c lb gift boxes of our delicious candies made to order cordaro candies phone sis at the bus stop you pey no eior for the prc tfolilyol bridil
