cwna page 6 lesllo m clark corey harrington jr the editors corner this coming year there are some things which poetry best expres ses and so we find this little poem in a newspaper which best expresses what we should all strive for 1 he author is unknown but it can be surmised that if he put into a practice what he expressed in these simple words the world around him was a happier place and he was a happier person for it this coming year id like to be a friend to everyone id like to feel each day well spent at setting of the sun id like to know that i have done at least one kindly deed before i lay me down to sleep that i have given heed to some ones cry for sympathy or friendship or that 1 have made the day seem brighter to some chance passerby and that the world is better still in just some lit tle way because ive tried to live the very best 1 could each day id like to be a ray of light when skies are overcast id like to help some one who failed to blot out all the past to start again despite the storms and find the skies are blue to know that in this good old world theres lots thats fine and true id like to be the kind of person everyone will love and make the world seem just a little more like heaven above id like in all my dealings to be true and- just and fair that god will help me do these things shall be my daily prayer what is a newspaper if the three toronto daily papers can be taken as representative of the daily press there is an alarm ing tendency to deviate from the path of what we humbly believe to be proper newspaper standards there are three distinct parts of any paper daily or weekly advertising editorial and news a sharp distinction must be drawn between the three if a news paper is to fulfil its function and the prerequisite of good news reporting is to present the facts as they are not as one would wish them to be it is then alarming to say the least to find our daily news so highly col oured with the domestic and international politics of the controlling interests of these city dailies in vary ing degrees what should quite rightly be contained on the editorial pages is subtly blended with what purport to be straight news accounts so that the reader is con fused and misled into taking private opinions as gospel truth the new owner of the telegram has promised us a fearless independent newspaper whatever degree of success he achieves in thisjwill be an improvement on the kingbaiting and liberalhating sheet which has consistently coloured its news accounts to put the gov ernment and its leaders in an unfavourable light the star which veers as far from the line in the other dir ection could as well recharter its course and keep its anticonservative views on the proper page with the globe and mail we have the least quarrel for it is only on rare occasions that this newspaper which we per sonally believe to be of higher calibre than either of its more flamboyant evening contemporaries has strayed from the path of factual reporting a suggestion wuld be for the daily newspaper association to adopt a code of ethics which would re quire all members to become real newspapers the public should have as theinjright the privilege of read ing news as it happens and forming their own opinions on topical questions t he newspaper has in turn every just right to say anything which the bounds of decency allow on its editorial pages designated as such pot pourri delayed two weeks because of the heavy news and advertising content of the december heralds pic tures taken at the inaugural dinner of the provincial paper quarter century club appear in this issue we cure indebted to lee trenhplm personnel manager of the company for supplying us with the pictures in good time and are sorry they had to be held so long for reproduction the 1949 council starts its year with an inaugural meeting next monday followed by mayor gibbons annual dinner the new board of education will meet for the council when they went to the polls on january 1st itie tely and globe and mail strongly plumped for the proposal while the star was dead against it a good ice surface has been laid on norval rink and the winter season of hockey and skating is in full force in our neighbouring muni cipality joe lake publisher of the powaasan news was returned as mayor by acclamation in- the i northern municipality mr lake i a former george- town- man brother of mrs- ah- feller and uncle by marriage of the herald editor- v in case any irate sports fans vvrc looking for a game at the arena last niht we will blame
