which elliott moses dlrtsctor of the ontario plow- tnens association is writlog about the vilt of canadas champion plowmen ui the bfcltlah laics kelrst since my lost loiter the boys and ave had a vay iull program j of events and jtcuviufcs intruding an international plowin match klghtseellpa injwo countries and numerous parties it is a hit tiring for farmers used to regular hours unci not too much excitement but nevertheless wc arc enjoying every minute of it- we have had a jfrand time in ireland and now we are on our way back to england where wti shall apend a few days before bailing for- canada ill have more to say about ireland but now i would like to describe our last days in scot land blrfatseehnf in scotland edinburgh is said to be the most beautiful city in the british isles and it was our privilege to see some of the historical sites we were accompanied by mr t w jack of the tourists association of scotland we were taken to edinburgh castle which is the highest point in the city and gives one an excel lent view of the surrounding area we saw the birthplace of sir wal ter scott the famous scottish nov elist and visited the homo of sir james younfi simpson the discov erer of chloroform but perhaps most interesting to us as canadians was the cottage of alexander gra ham bell who came to canada in 1870 and invented the telephone in the city of brantford visit to a machinery testing station from edinburgh our party proc- with much more action every now uud then there would bo a loud shout from th men which sounded ukti a mild form of indian vat whoop the boys had a little dif ficulty at first catching on to somo of the different dance steps but it was not long before they wero putting on u teal dcmojuitratlbn of their dancing ability international match fci umavady on j the morning of the match our party and about 40 english ahd scottish plowmfch and ono contest ant from the isle of man were tak en by bus to tiie plowing field at limavady nearly 40 miles outside belfast it had rained all through the night and was still raining as we reached uie plowing field which by that time was a sea of mud entries deliberately restricted totalled 111 against 12b last year these included 17 overseas compe titors in the horse section and 22 tractor competitors competition was very keen in every class the rules restricted handling to foot work only and this of course was new to our boys however in spite of this they made a very cre- dltaole showing and while due to the type of plows used and the manner of scoring our boys did not win in the regular classes they were winners in the special visitor class with alvin mark the saluda gold medallist placing first and bob timbers and rhys bacher the esso champion second and third re spectively presentation of indian war c lubs the annual dinner and presenta tion of prizes sponsored by the northern ireland plowmen s asso ciation was a fitting climax to the matchs activities my particular job on this occasion was to present to each member of the irish team v ho visited canada last year an eeded to glasgow where we were indian war club lust fall the irishmen had honoured us with immediately taken to the scottish agricultural machinery testing sta tion just outside the city the sta tion is a new branch of the agnc department and time will decide whether or not it will give suffi ce nt service to warrant its exist ence the main object as far as wc could cather is to bring mach inery from all parts of the manu facturing world and test it for use in scotland we were directed through the main building and fchown the equipment and testing methods machinery for experimental pur poses is submitted on a voluntary shillelaghs and so we wished to give them ome token of exchange the presentation was unannounced and was one of the highlights of the evening the program was quite lengthy with toasts songs and plenty of irish wit wluch we all thoroughly enjoyed the evening s entertainment brought to a close for another year the northern ireland international match due to bad weather the association bui ely made expense although they conducted a ery good match our boys consider the old country plowmen artists high school news basis and the tests are conducted their particular style of plowing by experts without charge while wc were there implements made in germany new zealand australia united states and canada were being tested after leaving the main building wc were taken to a field where two men were trying out a heavy australian plow designed to break up virgin soil powered by a heavy caterpillar tractor this plow has no difficulty in turning out boulders weighing several hun dred pounds and roots up ordinary hrubbery with the greatest of ease f the day after our visit to tha testing station wc took a hurried tour of the highlands we enjoyed the trip immensely and indeed our only regret was that wc could not pend more time in that rugged yet picturesque section one feature that struck us dur ing our trip was the extent to which the scottish department of reforestation has reclaimed many 6f the mountain sides and has plan ted them with young trees not only has this improved the scenery but in time it will prove to be of great commercial value kn route to ireland the nthtt day we took tho train to stranraer where we caught the boat for belfast when wc landed in ireland we were greeted by of ficials of the northern ireland plowmens association wo were particularly pleased to sco pfctor flupa trick whom we met lust aut umn when he accompanied the ul ster team to the international hatch at lindsay grower of luhl all the visiting dlqjymen were billeted at the stroucr hotel at portatewart and it was quite am experience to sit back and listen to the many different dialects of the englhui and scottish people we almost felt as though were were attending a league of nations con ference ao varied were the expres- sdonjt and ways of speaking we landed in ireland two days before the international match and ao the boys bd a day in which to jnesurtlce as well a to take part in the usual round of entertainment on our first night we attended dance aponeored by the junior jtabiar orgrmlsttku it we bttrej lister agricultural college the next day we were taken on a tour of belfast we visited a llax factory which was something quite new and interesting to us wc also stopped tt the greenmount agricultural college muckamorc which is the only college of its kind in northern ireland at greenmount college the prin cipal and staff are all young men none of whom appeared to be over jo we were told that the depart ment of agriculture established the policy of employing young men who would have the same slant on life as the students and thereby establish a more harmonious spirit in the school than if staffed with older men the college specializes in regis tered dual shorthorn cattle large white pigs and also keeps three or four breeds of poultry aside from the orchard and the greenhouse all crops are grown for feed for the livestock ireland is noted for its potatoes and the college prides itself on its success in growing seed potatoes which are used on the farms and also sold as seed most of the courses at green mount arc duugned for boys who intend to form there is also a de gree course which is along the lines of our own ontario agricul tural college returned men arc given preference as students and if there is any additional room civil ian students may enter during the war years the college was used as an air force base iioveriiknent milk depot our last visit was to the govern ment controlled milk depot all production of milk in ulster is government controlled right from the farm to the consumer and this depot operated by the govern ment at cost receives grades and pasteurises 4000000 gallons of milk per year which is collected by 26 lorries from 1500 farmers- the depot does everything but bottle tlie milk which is done in the large dairy distributing centres and then sold to the stores- northern ireland u the only part of the united kingdom wluch pro duce more milk and butter than the home market
